There is a site called Kiva I just found out about today through the above link, that lets you provide some of the money to make philanthropic loans to disadvantaged individuals in various parts of the world. And right now they have some kind of major sponsorship that is letting them do a promotion, where you can sign up and make a $25 donation for no cost to you! So literally at the cost of only a couple minutes of your time, you can improve someone's life.
And if that's not enough incentive, the fur who posted the journal where I found out about this, is running a contest too for individuals who join Kiva and complete the process via her referral link. You might get some art out of it! And even if you don't, you'll still have the satisfaction of having helped someone. So hey, check it out!
