To me, it comes down to morons wanting their useless opinion known about something where their personal preference is unwanted. Unless it's an actual creative criticism about the art, like "You drew that hand backwards" or something, folks should keep their personal arrogance uncommented.

Really, the only person who gets to make comments about not liking the esthetic is the person the art's drawn for.

Yeah, it seems like a double standard, where positive expressions of opinion are accepted and negative ones are shunned, but the positive opinions encourage artist. The negative ones don't.

I am sure the comeback to this post by the people in question would be "But if we grew a pair, as you suggested, then we would have bad back pain too!"

What this journal makes me do is wonder if there's a drawing equivalent of willful suspense of disbelief.

It's more like the inverse of it; it's the willful refusal to suspend disbelief: if the subject is to their liking, they can ignore any inconsistencies, but otherwise no. It's basically a double-standard.

I actually blocked someone for this when I started out. If you took each comment independantly they were harmless enough but when they came with every. single. submission... it started to feel really unpleasent and mean spirited. I got depressed because every time I put somethig up I knew it was going to come, and it did. So I blocked. I felt terrible at the time but my experience of posting pictures improved so much that I think I did the right thing.

If it improved your mental-well-being, then yes, you did the right thing. There's no point in inflicting misery on yourself just because someone else insists-on/enjoys being obnoxious. While they're entitled to their opinion, you're equally entitled to ignore it.

I hate that when someone says something like that. Its just a silly little fantasy drawing. Physics (generally) don't apply.

also on Sofurry my brother recnetly had tthis one weirdo comment on his art about "reptiles not having breasts" and then h made a comment saying "you should do this this and this and blah blah..." =/ it's like they're TRYING to get you to draw what they like it's a bit retarded.

a comment for example would be like "umm I think of those breasts might be a bit small or the nipple is in the wrong spot etc." pretty helpful,I'd avoid that next time.

In some ways the opposite is just as bad. While it's nice that people like an image, comments of "Oh cool" really aren't any more constructive than "it sucks!", but at least they let us know that the person likes the image. The "oh cool" comments are really nothing more than a text-based fave, and not really any more informative. I'd have to call a "constructive" comment anything that you could potentially answer back with anything more than a "thanks!".

Oh, hey, I think I left a comment like this recently. Not intended as a snide remark so deeply reflecting opinion as such, but I can see how it could be taken. Edification for the future.

It's a comment you'll see in multiple variations all over the place, all the time: not everyone means it in the fashion I'm describing, sometimes it's just in good fun, but too often it's *not*, and those are the people the rant is aimed at.

Still can be "back pain", just have to use a loose enough definition of "back". After all, the lower point of the spine is in that general area.

In the very rare instance that I bother to answer such whines, I usually say that if they don't like the art, they're welcome to their money back.

Same goes for this stuff, people should just shut the fuck up and focus on what they like rather than the stuff that other people do that they don't like. :B Got nothing nice to say, then say nothin' at all. I've been in this fandom for years now. Since 97 about.
And while I've never been particularly ahem... sociable. I do enjoy the role-playing, and collaborative efforts from time to time with people. ~ My current haunt is Second Life, which in and of it's self has it's cliques and subcultures. I used to wander around a game called furcadia, and before then, things that required the IRC and Telnets :B ~ No doubt, I've seen my fair share of every kind of art there is, too.

~ Anyway, with out going off on too much of a tangent, little "activists" like that just wear their insecurities (and erections) on their sleeve.

I play a tall, muscular, femininely-gifted, but not excessively so Vixen.
And I play a similarly set up Hyena too.
~ I've gotten, metric gallons (yes) of snarky comments :D Some of them, are just flat out jealous. I walk into a room and naturally people notice my character. (Especially on secondlife because it's a literal visual medium). And, you know, like I said I'm not very social, I keep to my self. But apparently, some people get so insecure that I'm stealing the attention away from them due to my "hotness" (God I feel narcissistic just saying that), that they comment on how it's so un-natural, or impossible, or INSTANTLY, try to stick up for their own body preferences.

... And some, who're just downright pissed off that you're not applying their fetish, so they try to browbeat you with it. Case and point, Hyenas. ~ I've gotten "You know, Hyenas actually have a big fake clit-dick." (with a subtext of: Why won't you grow one and ram it up my ass :3c) that it's not even funny.

I don't let it get to me, much.... But it sure is aggravating, when perfect strangers ask me to grow a dick :(
