Hello all,
This morning a police incident occurred at the VancouFur convention hotel, which I would like to briefly address.
First off, the convention and myself want to send out love and well wishes to all the staff at the Executive Hotel, and convey our relief that none of their employees were hurt. The Executive Hotel has been a wonderful partner in our community over the past couple years, working hand in hand with our organizing committees to bring you fun events at an affordable cost to us all. They have shown us nothing but respect, friendship and a willingness to learn more about our fandom so that they can better serve us during our conventions. They are, in my opinion, one of the most elite and professional groups that I have had the pleasure of working with in my 15 years of event production.
The Executive Hotel is located in a busy community, and is surrounded by new developments, an assortment of quality restaurants and is next to one of our rapid transit stations. This is a safe, well maintained and clean neighbourhood in a part of the city that rarely sees the type of circumstance that transpired today. In terms violent crime, the Burnaby area statistically is not even in the top 10 in British Columbia. In fact it ranks safer than Vancouver itself and 3 times safer than the community that I call home.
Unfortunately sometimes bad things end up happening to good people. This was a targeted attack on individuals that have no relationship with the hotel. It was a situation of the Executive Hotel being a random location of a heinous crime.
Information on what happened is slow to come out. I know people will ask, so I have linked to local news below. Please note that the police investigation is ongoing and much of the story is at this point conjecture.
VancouFur is to be held at the Executive Hotel in Burnaby this March 1-3. Please help us and join me in supporting our friends at this amazing establishment, showing them that together we can overcome these events and emerge stronger than ever before. The best way to show support is to book a room with them! Information is on our site at http://www.vancoufur.ca/hotel.php
We can't wait to welcome you all to our convention for a fun, exciting and safe weekend.
Regards,

I was at this hotel only yesterday and it's amazing to think such a safe zone can have something so horrible happen. It's like nothing I've even heard of around this city, at least, not to this extent.
All I can do is reassure everyone of my own opinion of the events: Freak chance.
I for one fully support this hotel and amazing venue and I look forward to a kick ass VancouFur hosted there! :D
Its a great venue with amazing and friendly staff. My heart goes out to them and those involved in the incident. I wish there was something that we could do for them you know?

Sadly this type of violence has been happening everywhere over not just the lower mainland, but in most metropolitan areas. I have no fears or worries about being at VF this coming spring, and I just need to book a table soon.

I fully support them and still believe it to be a safe place regardless of yesterdays scene. :3

They are really wonderful people at the hotel. : )
