Maryn's Free Art Friday FAQ
Every Friday I pull out my sketchbook and pencils and offer up free art. For those wondering, here's a bunch of info about it :D
What is Free Art Friday?
Every Friday I put up a journal asking for volunteers to have their characters drawn by me! There’s a theme for every Friday and I pick a random number of random people to draw and then…I draw them. For free!
Why are you doing this?
Free Art Friday is a thing I started as a fun way to get some experience drawing characters I’ve never drawn before and share my art with people. It’s something I do because I want to, not because I feel I have to. It’s also a nice way to interact with my fans and hopefully make new friends in the process. Every Friday I get together with friends to play pen and paper RPGs and I always end up drawing the whole time we play. Sometimes I find myself at a loss of what to draw, so this should help me never need for something new to draw. All drawings are in real media and this does not cut into time I spend on commissions.
How do I get some free art?
Whenever I post the journal with the call for volunteers (usually laaaate Thursday night) just follow the directions. Fill out the little form included and attach refs then sit back and wait. I generally post the drawings to my gallery sometime during the weekend. I will leave a shout with a link to the art on the pages of everyone whom I drew for.
What are the limits on what you will draw?
Same limits as my normal commissions. I won’t draw vehices/robots/machines. I tend not to draw characters with elaborate tattoos or markings just because these sketches are pretty small. As far as adult art goes, I don’t draw scat/watersports, pedo/cub, many EXTREME fetishes (if you’re unsure just ask, I won’t be rude about it). If you’re unsure if I’ll draw something, just ask.
How closely related to the theme do characters have to be?
The closer they are to the theme, the more likely I am to draw them. You’re welcome to include any characters you like, but if they don’t fit the theme, there’s a low likelihood that I will actually draw them.
How many characters can be volunteered?
I’d prefer if you limit it to no more than three entries. If you have more than one character that you think will fit the theme, that’s great! Please submit each character as a separate comment, though.
Do you require a visual ref or can you work from a written description?
I prefer visual refs because it's easier for me to glance at a pic and draw from it. But I'm not going to say no. There's always a chance I'll give your character a try off just a description. But please note that if you have no visual refs, don't expect me to get the drawing spot on. I don't do revisions on these drawings as they're not commissions. But please keep your description concise.
Can I enter a character that isn't mine?
Unless you specifically tell me that you're submitting a friend/loved one's character as a gift to them, please ONLY SUBMIT YOUR OWN CHARACTERS! If it's a gift, just let me know in the description. If it's not a gift and you don't own the character, DO NOT SUBMIT IT! I am NOT comfortable drawing characters for people they do not belong to. Thanks!
Can I enter a couple to be drawn together?
Sure! Just submit them as separate comments and make a note that they are a couple on either comment. If you don’t want either of the characters drawn in a sexual situation with another character, please make note of that.
How often can I participate?
As often as you like! I try to switch it up and give new people a chance for free art every week. I also make an effort to include people who I don’t know so it’s not just me drawing exclusively for my friends every week. I will say this, though, I do tend to draw for people I know more regularly because it’s safe and comfortable for me. I already know they like my art and I know they’ll say nice things, so I find it less scary to draw for them. I’m still a pretty shy and anxious person, afterall. I try to be open and friendly and I welcome anyone to get to know me better if you’re interested. I love making friends, no matter your artistic skill level.
Are you expecting anything in return?
The only thing I expect in return is a thank you. I don’t do this for money or profit, just for fun.
Is there some way to guarantee I get drawn?
Not really. As I said, I tend to draw for people I know more often because it feels safer to draw for people I know will appreciate my work. But there's no way to predict what I'm going to draw or for whom. I draw whatever my mood demands. I'm an artist, not a machine, afterall. But if you're wondering if you can specifically request to be picked for a certain theme, sorry, it doesn't work that way. Sucking up won't help.
Aw man, I'm pretty far down the list. I hope you get to me.
Fear not! I don't go by first come first serve with these. I choose according to what I'm inspired to draw, so even someone who posts first can get passed over while the person who posts last might get drawn. I have no control over my muse and what I am moved to draw at any given time :O It's kind of a crap shoot like that.
I really like your art, but I'm unhappy that you didn't pick my character to draw :(
I'm very sorry that I didn't draw your character. I wish I could draw every single person who enters, but I just don't have the time. The hardest part about Free Art Friday is not being able to make everyone happy. With that said, if you can't handle not being picked to be drawn, perhaps you should consider not entering. I can't guarantee that I'll get to draw for everyone who wants art and I hope you guys can understand that.
If you guys have any other questions about Maryn’s Free Art Friday, just ask them on this journal and I’ll add them to the list. As well, if you have suggestions for themes, go ahead and lay them on me.
