Mate is something different in most standards. Mate essentially means girlfriend/boyfriend. Because those are people you mate with and court. Being married is a more respected term I believe. I would call some one my mate if I were simply just.. mating with them, having sex with them, not.. loving them and married to them for eternity. o.o; I mean I simply think its respectful to call them as they are a married couple. Wife and husband you know? Mate sounds very.. courtly. *not to mention, I loath the word XD*
Understandable. Though I would still go with the respectable term because of that. You dont know whether they liked being called mates or husband and wife, so I would still stick with the classic term. *nods*
I guess it's just because we're furries that I call our partners "mates" I mean that's what they call animal couples "mates".
I do thank you though for your concern in the matter. ^^
It is a furry term for a significant other. But honestly irl.. we arent really animals, we are humans :P I myself have used the term a couple of times /mates/ but I just.. Idk its weird, it doesnt sound right. A
And your welcome.
Respect is all that matters I think, and you have a ton, even for some one who just jumped right into corrections or what have you. What ever it is I did lol.
Idk. I just like the proper human term for it better I guess @.@ I know its not what I like that matters, but maybe they dont like being called that you never know, you know?
*chuckles* weeelllll if you really want to be technical we are animals :P *giggles*
I am a very respectful person until I am disrespected. And even then I tend to still be pretty respectful just to spite the person XD
Dear. we arent animals. On FA, we pose as animals, we create egos, escapes, things to help us cope, its apart of us, but it truly is not US as a human being, you type on your computer with hands, not paws.
No I mean we are animals based on science. :) Humans are just another species in the kingdom animalia. Sorry for being so technical XP I went to special science classes in school lol
I am kind of chuckling, there are people below me thinking I am starting something. Its fun to watch but I honestly am not picking a fight with anyone, I thought I was having an honest discussion. I see it lead some where else with the other person below me. I am kind of intrigued.
Yea...it's amazing how easily people think others are picking fights when really they are the ones picking the fight. o.0 I don't see why it's so hard for people to discuss things without getting their panties in a bunch and turning into cussing cry babies :/
Ooooh I know, its mostly all of them that commented WAY above. Some are still doing it even though I have TRULY dropped the subject entirely after discussing it for a day and a half..
I love how we, as a community, are not allowed to call our married SO's "mates" because that guy says so. Mate sounds so warm, happy and loving. "Wife" sounds negative by today's social standard.
I didnt say no one could call any one that. It was more so a discussion. Thats all I thought of it as, simply bringing up my own points. In no way did I say people couldnt call people mates. And that would be your opinion dear. Wife to me sounds.. definite.
Ah, well was mostly responding to me, I see you agree with them, thats chill. But I will tell you, that it had nothing to do with me telling anyone what they can and cant do.
I was being nice and stuff. Wasnt ordering anyone to stop anything wasnt even trying. But I will just leave it at that. The only reason this thing is so long is because I read and respond to every comment given to me. But in all seriousness I wasnt rude, I wasnt pushy. Just.. explaining myself and my view that was being challenged as well as challenging others.
No, no it doesn't. To me, mate sounds like it's coming out of a specific fetish (furry), and wife sounds normal and loving. So, no... in your opinion maybe, but there are many of us who find it creepy.
But then we are talking about a website where people think it's appropriate to announce their "masters" and other sexual partners openly, so...
I suspect that the most respectful thing to do would be to use the term that -they- prefer, and until then, in my experience "mates" and "husband/wife" and "significant other" are equally respectful. The respect part isn't generated from the term being used (provided there's at least a minimal level of respect there) but from the willingness to adapt if necessary.
I completely agree, but untill we know what proper term they both like best, it's basically free for all for everyone in what to call those two in retrospect
Depends on the context though. If some one is from a certain area where the term for friends are 'mates' such as "Hey mate! How has your day been mate?" Then I can see that because I know of such places. but if its a term describing a marriage its completely different.
Animals mating generally means they get together, have sex, and then leave, or they are mated like bf/gf not as much for marriages though.
I dunno, I saw an episode of Jersey Shore once... "we aren't really animals" just doesn't fit it, sorry. I've seen monkeys in a zoo with more manners. Just waiting for the episode where "The Situation" tosses poop.
Indeed it is, for most people. But I was only putting what I had said there in the reason that A) Maybe they didnt know they were married. And B) Because maybe they dont like being called that. and C) I just felt like it. I didint see anything wrong with shoving that up there lol
I dont know, I think so far, including you, there are/have been maybe about five or six people responding on this and it just keeps going on, new people and new things to bitch about and some people that are still going lol.
Indeed. Some one thinks because all of this is so long, that its a massive argument when my half is simply explaining what I had written, not as much arguing and being hostile :P
Well, I think when it comes to respect then the intention itself matters and not the word you use.. So there's no real need to correct people since I'm sure they didn't meant it in any negative way :)
Oh I didnt mean to correct them XD I was simply stating "Considering you dont know what they like to be called why wouldnt you go a little more neutral with it." Thats all.
The point is you're being an incorrigible annoyance over a WORD. You have stirred up so much drama over a WORD that YOU don't agree with.
Dragoneer doesn't seem upset. Neither does Sciggles. It's not your life, and it is definitely not your relationship, so why does it matter? Nobody cares if you don't like the word, or if you think it's "not polite".
Furries are people that RELATE TO ANIMALS. And it's pretty goddamn retarded for you to be so bent out of shape over someone using a phrase that RELATES TO ANIMALS.
Um, I am not bent out of shape hun. I am not upset, irritated. Hurt or anything of that sort.
I didnt completely say that it was all about me and my dislike of a word, I actually had a discussion or two with some one else on this same thread saying quite a few of the same things and I got understanding.
And its funny how you bring up drama because you are some one who is stirring up something already dead.
I have dropped this subject.. what two days ago? I think it is time you should too.
Mmm, see I would have to disagree. Mate definitely means different things to different people. Mate, for me, is reserved for someone whom I feel strongly bonded to. Someone whom I feel a great, deep, and most likely permanent connection with. Someone whom I would want to marry. *nods*
You see, my only direction I was going with this, and considering, was what they might like to be called in the terms of not knowing. You know? What if, because they are married, they wanted to be called husband and wife? Not mates? I mean you dont know. I was just having an interesting discussion on the term, I promise :P
Me and my significant other consider being mated a much more high end term as there are animals who mate for life and such that is the term we take it as. I'm certain no disrespect was meant by the term.
I was never saying disrespect was meant. I was only stating that they were wife and husband. And I was told "Same difference." I had my opinion no? But I have since dropped the subject.
Sorry. I wasn't trying to start anything with you. Just giving my two sense on the topic. XD It's also like how people have different meanings for the word lover or significant other. I totally understand you have a different opinion on the matter.
Wolves mate for life like other certain animals...hence mate. Mate = life partner just the same as wife and husband do. except in this case, wives and husbands can get a divorce so, so much for eternity.
Wife and Husband isn't neutral, it's something decided by the church. Partners, life partners, companions...different terms that all mean pretty much the same thing, and I find those things are more neutral and wife and husband.
I think I did, a couple of times. If not, it was certainly implied several. *firm nod* I wasnt trying to convince anyone of anything, just having a simple discussion that some escalated mostly on their own accord. Not mine, not what I wanted to do and I will leave it at that instead of perhaps taking an accusation that I was 'starting an argument' ;3 I dont need some one else telling me what to say my dear, it is all good but I really do want to drop all of this right now. It doesnt need to continue.
Ignoring the mate/wife argument completely, I also dislike the furry use of the word mate. The word to me means my friends. I'm going to the pub with my mates. Me and my mate went to the cinema, etc etc.
My significant other would be my boyfriend, my fiance, my husband, whatever. Within my circle of mates, he's my best mate. Gets me confused sometimes, cos are people referring to their friend or their bf/gf?
She did. If I remember correctly it was an April fool's one with her character holding a remote that switched the skins (colors/fur/whatever) of Neer and Fender.
yeah, but these are the same people that will cause a fuss over any little detail.
"OH MY GOD, Dragoneer is right-handed! He's such a monster."
"Cripes, Neer eats his pizza pointy end first... QUIT TRYING TO IMPOSE YOUR WORLDVIEW ON US"
"For Fucks sake, ***oneer is posting that he doesn't like asparagus... SOOO TYPICAL "
Banner drama is useless, there's 2 solutions if the banner annoys you:
Easy Solution: Block it with Adblocker.
A bit harder Solution: Install Stylish add-on to your Firefox and get FA header customizer, it allows you to replace the banner with the pic you want(yes, even porn, see following). Notice that it replaces the banner locally(it doesn't hack the site) so other users don't see the banner you're using.

Chill dude. I didnt say you werent proper. I am from the north, Maine to be precise it has nothing to do with location. Its just, you dont know if they like being called mates or not, I would think the term that people did use for people who were married were husband and wife. I am not picking a fight or trying to rustle your jimmies bub. I am not trying to change your opinion, I am just stating what they are. I mean, maybe they dont like being called mates? And maybe, just maybe I didnt know if you knew they were married.
So maybe just maaaybe I was informing you they were married just in case you didnt know. Because why not tell you they were married? Maybe you would have written something had you known if you didnt know? I was being utterly respectful in most terms. Long story short, perhaps I was just trying to inform you something you might not have known not knowing if it was something you knew. Kay? Chill, out.
And honestly, mate and wife, not the same thing. There are differences.
Dear, the last thing I am doing is arguing :) I am not reading too much into it. I am simply saying why call some one mate, or mated. sure they may be acting like animals on a site for animals and their assisted fetishes, but in all honesty, why would you call some one, clearly married, mates when there is a better term for that. It is more questioning than anything. I actually held back the "Why the fuck would you DO that." to the person above who said when they get married they will call their significant other their mate.
I had to wonder "Would you say it in front of friends and family? Or just on this site?" I mean how far does it go with most people, completely out of curiosity. The last thing I am poking is a fight.
I was giving that person a scenario of what my thought process may had been, they dropped it, I dropped it. Perhaps you should not relight the fire dear.
I dont think so, but if you do thats alright. I am simply explaining what I had written. So that maybe they would understand I am not on some soap box trying to eliminate the term. Was just explaining.
You can think I am reading too much into things, but in all honesty your opinion on what I write is very miniscule, as in dont really care if you think I am reading too much into it. Talking, typing, explaining. It is what I do. I am sure you will live with it hun.
You know, some times it is good to look deep into things, getting to the root of them. I see no issues in any thing I have inquired. But I will ask you, do you say it to your family? Or do you just say it here? I mean, how far does that term actually go?
I say in terms of knowledge, you dont know what people like to be called, albeit a furry site or not, you still dont know. I would stick with respected terms, and the fact of this matter is that there IS a difference between the term mate and wife. Others may not see it but I do.
And in all honesty, dont see why yall are fanning the flames haha. They dropped it a bit ago, and two of you just picked it back up again :) I see who is looking for a war of words, or what have you.
Not looking to fight here honestly. I was being nice, considerate even. I may look into things, but at least I am looking.
I dropped a comment, that's hardly fanning the flames.
I call her my mate to anyone who asks, and at any rate the original comment was on a furry site, where it's acceptable all the time. The scope of where it is used outside of this website and the fandom's culture in general isn't relevant.
You seem to think you have this profound understanding of the word mate, while we all share a rudimentary one. I don't need to explain the fallacy here.
Learn set theory... just because she's my wife doesn't mean she's not my mate.
Webster's definition of a mate:
one of a pair: as
a : either member of a couple and especially a married couple
It even went so far as to specify MARRIED, I only copy-pasted. So there you go, stop with this "I know better" charade.
I never said I know better dear. All said was " some times it is good to look deep into things" and " do you say it to your family? " and " you dont know what people like to be called" and that "I believe there is a difference" *you dont have to, websters definition or not*
Still going here I also said "
I say in terms of knowledge, you dont know what people like to be called, albeit a furry site or not, you still dont know. I would stick with respected terms" and "And in all honesty, dont see why yall are fanning the flames haha"
You did not 'drop a comment' you said "You are looking to far into this lmfao." Or something relative, so I responded. I did not give you a higher than me response. And it is relevent to me, maybe not to you because the wife thing is an in real life sort of thing. Some people consider things differently than others.
And no, I dont think I have a profound understanding. I also didnt say "you cant call your wife your mate. You shouldnt call your wife your mate." I was simply noting you do not know what one person likes to be called pertaining to their relationship. Which is the only reason I put "Wife" On the very very first comment to begin with.
you thinking I am higher above everyone does give me the feeling of fanning the flames dear. Its a silly accusation of some one who is just having a simply discussion.
Thanks for repeating everything you said line for line... I could have scrolled up just as easily.
I think you meant "greater than thou."
I guess you're one of those nuts who thinks everything has to be politically correct. What if I don't like being called dear? I know a lot of people dont, I guess you'd better stop before you offend someone!
Look around you, you're outnumbered, you're extrapolating what isn't there, and you're the only one on that soapbox.
If you're going to quote your entire previous post, don't leave out the part that's relevant.
"there IS a difference between the term mate and wife. Others may not see it but I do." Can definitely be construed as condescending, though entertaining when you're wrong by dictionary definition.
Well then perhaps you should have scrolled up and reread what I had written perhaps you would have understood better. I dont understand why you are being so hostile. And Yeah, greater than though. That one too I guess, but I am truly not. And no, I am not one of those nuts who thinks things have to be politically correct, at least not that I know of. And if you dont like being called dear I would happily stop calling you thus.
And outnumbered? I.. dont see why I would be numbered against to begin with, I am in not argument or debate. I am in a discussion last I checked.
I am not extrapolating a thing.
Also, Yes I left that out, because it is something I didnt need to repeat, you looked it up, and I was only mildly wrong, I still believe there is a difference depending on who you speak to. You dont, thats okay, you looked up the term in the dictionary. Good for you. I am not getting angry here.
I am not condescending. I dont consider myself smart or brilliant or a know it all, I only consider myself respectful which I believe I have been on some term. I have not once called some one a rude name, or blown up or busted out caps. all except the 'IS" because its my way of exclaiming a word I guess, trying to put a little something there but not truly yelling at anyone.
Seriously, not trying to be argumentative here. Just trying to explain myself and what I have written.
No, I wasnt completely wrong. It was and is my opinion. If you dont mind. There is really no need to keep responding to this. you are simply nitpicking now, something I had not once done in any of my posts. Only inquired.
Have a Merry Christmas and so on. Or Hanukkah, or quanza, or which ever it is you may celebrate :)
Because I am quick to respond and attentive when people are speaking with me. And I honestly havent been nitpicking. Simply explaining myself, but to each their own opinion.
Dude, furries nitpick because they honestly don't have anything interesting in their lives to do other than that. Which is why I only come on here only once in awhile to hang out when I'm away from cool humans.
Noun
Excessive or erotic interest in oneself and one's physical appearance.
Extreme selfishness, with a grandiose view of one's own talents and a craving for admiration.
You're proud of that?
This is why I don't like people.. lol
Don't know you, don't want to know you, and it sounds to me like you have a problem with furs... you should either get that in check or try a different site.
And may I remind you that you jumped into a conversation that didn't involve you, and now you're playing the victim.
If you can't take the heat, then I shall thank you to mind your own business.
I'm on your side! I see no "deep thinking" put into this. I personally thought it was just common knowledge, until I read these horrendous comments towards you.
You weren't hostile. You only stated your opinion, and when challenged? You didn't push. You merely explained yourself.
I see nothing wrong with what you're doing. Please continue :) And to your comment below? All dat butthurt indeed.
Yeah, haha thanks. Seriously, not starting a fight. Truly am getting a ton of hostility from one simple remark. Its very intriguing. A nice experiment if you ask me. Hell I wrote something to the same person that said the same thing above this person, me and the other person.. were very civil, yet on this thread of comments I am being attacked. unsure why, but. Meh Not hurting :P
I am not arguing, sadly. Simply explaining myself. Everyone else is getting quite butthurt about what I was saying. Its interesting what can happen with just one word..
Consider what I have actually said was nothing hostile or argumentative but merely explanation meaning its not an argument but a discussion. Well at least that was my intent. It may be a mile long, but that is because I am able to respond almost instantly. Dont you elaborate and explain when people dont understand what you say?
Like I said, nothing is truly a argument, or at least what I had been saying wasnt. People are weird at this point and are thinking that I am attackign them and what they think. Thinking I am trying to be politically correct when in all actuality I was simply saying. "But what if they dont like the term?" Its odd how far its come. Its also very intriguing.
Perhaps you should stop trying so hard to shove your opinions down other peoples throats.
And one more time, this was a rhetorical question. I dont want a response, especially from you.
I am not shoving my opinions. But alright. This is dropped for you, if you respond to this one, I will not respond. Just saying I am done speaking with you because you are being very abrasive.
Not at all! so long as its constructive criticism and not just UGH ITS GROSS I HATE IT then I like it and will take it into thought for future works X3 so thanks!
Around the beginning of me logging on, there was a description (which is also a link) above the FurAffinity screen about an issue about these new accounts and spamming or scamming (I just forgot which two was it). After spending SO MUCH time making my secondary comment on a journal called "RIP" by the username A_Dark_Passenger (it has a phoenix bird character), I noticed the description has changed into a banner update.
I made this comment because I was shocked and lucky to notice that a description that I think has been up there for quite a while has JUST NOW been replaced (as of the night that ends Wed. 12/19/2012). This means I'm very early of posting this comment on this new journal here. There will definitely be so much comments below mine.
As far as I'm concerned, its about time the banner got changed...I don't know why but I like seeing it change every few weeks :3 Its like knowing everyone is still alive at FA...the fall banner was also getting annoying. lol. Its almost Christmas!!!
Cool I first saw this new winter banner art from sciggles a few days ago when I saw it mentioned it would finally replace the fall banner and I like it even more now seeing it again.
It wasn't. Bringing up drama, starts drama. And I deal with drama everyday. I was very surprised with how many are being so nice and drama free about it which I appreciate more than they will know.
why is it that for the past year(ish), you guys haven't even been having the banners change monthly? I would imagine it's not exactly a difficult task, and i've been sad that it's taken so long to get banners changed.. :(
They have been working on a new banner system for one, two people haven't been making as many banners, do an fa search for banner by date...you won't see hardly any and I couldn't see ANY for winter...
Hey I took your advice! ^.^ http://www.furaffinity.net/view/9530279/ I included a smaller version with text but I am not very sure how to go about submitting it or whatever..
Pretty much! banner needs to be in the tags so they can do a search for it and see it, maybe shout on some admin pages with it too (not spam though) Not sure how the new process will be after they change the format though
LOL no, I actually really like the banner updates. I'm sad they're doing away with the monthly changes. No, I'm more or less annoyed with all the bickering... Though I guess I am contributing so idk what I'm even saying >_>
Am I doing it right?
I do thank you though for your concern in the matter. ^^
I am a very respectful person until I am disrespected. And even then I tend to still be pretty respectful just to spite the person XD
We are human.
I am glad you are respectful, truly.

I was being nice and stuff. Wasnt ordering anyone to stop anything wasnt even trying. But I will just leave it at that. The only reason this thing is so long is because I read and respond to every comment given to me. But in all seriousness I wasnt rude, I wasnt pushy. i was simply agreeing with that person of "mate" :P
that's my view

At least that's a sort of argueing though and not stupid, infantile bitching about things xD

*shrugs* To each his own.
So, dont even try to change my opinion with yours.
Like I said, to each his own.
Drop it.
So maybe just maaaybe I was informing you they were married just in case you didnt know. Because why not tell you they were married? You're argument looks absolutely ridiculous. LOL

Good day, lol
Have a Merry Christmas and so on. Or Hanukkah, or quanza, or which ever it is you may celebrate :)
All of this...so unimportant.
Noun
Excessive or erotic interest in oneself and one's physical appearance.
Extreme selfishness, with a grandiose view of one's own talents and a craving for admiration.
You're proud of that?
This is why I don't like people.. lol
If you can't take the heat, then I shall thank you to mind your own business.
You weren't hostile. You only stated your opinion, and when challenged? You didn't push. You merely explained yourself.
I see nothing wrong with what you're doing. Please continue :) And to your comment below? All dat butthurt indeed.
There's usually some sort of drama on an "official" notice/thread/journal/etc. Needs more anti-llama spray
wow.
This question was more of a rhetorical question.
I felt the need to respond, it was a question.
If you didnt want some body to respond, perhaps it shouldnt have been said ;3
And one more time, this was a rhetorical question. I dont want a response, especially from you.
I'm glad theres finally a new banner though. I liked the last one, but it did get old after a few months X3
People do tend to get upset when you leave update details to the last minute.
I personally prefer the current banner system since it user motivated. Its allowed me to find many artist I would otherwise not know existed.
Didn't mean it that way D:
:D

Too right!
Yay, lights!
I made this comment because I was shocked and lucky to notice that a description that I think has been up there for quite a while has JUST NOW been replaced (as of the night that ends Wed. 12/19/2012). This means I'm very early of posting this comment on this new journal here. There will definitely be so much comments below mine.

I didn't know that; I was just making a common joke.

Good job for sciggles! ^^
Inb4 people start white-knighting for Sciggles.
Why you had to even say that I don't know...isn't saying "Inb4 drama" creating drama yourself? If not then you are at least looking for it.
And I don't see how I am creating drama.
Love the new banner though. Very colorful and flashy
Why can't I keep my mouth shut.
I need to go home. I am drunk. *hic*
why is it that for the past year(ish), you guys haven't even been having the banners change monthly? I would imagine it's not exactly a difficult task, and i've been sad that it's taken so long to get banners changed.. :(
http://www.furaffinity.net/view/9530279/ I included a smaller version with text but I am not very sure how to go about submitting it or whatever..
Also, nice work on the banner Sciggles! Its creative~
