Happy holidays, fellow furries! We hope the festive season has been kind to you and yours, and we hope many presents of your liking are to be found under the sacrificial tree!
That said, we're a little behind on releasing the beta. We apologize for that, but we are working on getting the new updates added to the beta site by this weekend/New Years, Updates like the new commission pages, new front page, improved submission management and others!
The beta, once all changes are integrated, will be available at:
http://ui.preyfar.dev.furaffinity.net/
The test site is currently usable, though it lacks features for the final test. Some things are currently broken (commenting) but we will have that fixed within a day or two. The test site runs on a separate copy of the DB. If you use the current test site, please keep in mind that if you delete a submission it WILL affect he live site (they share resources). So keep that in mind. Delete a submission, it will affect the submission on the live site.
We'll provide a news update with the changelog once all the new features are ported to the current beta.
UPDATE: Most of the userpage changes will not go live with the update, as we are not satisfied with their design yet.

nice to meet u too
... just sayin'.
It's amazing the little things people get assmad and start a shit storm over, I mean really.
>implying "shitstorms"
>hugboxing someone for making a spam comment
So...you're telling me that by posting telling someone that they shouldn't spam useless comments...I actually want them to spam useless comments? Flawless logic.
>Personally, I think this attack on him for saying he has the first comment on something is completely childish.
It's spam. Telling someone not to spam is "childish" ?
No one told him not to "spam", they all made snarky, passive aggressive comments. I fail to see how one extra comment is spam. Now if it was an entire wall's worth of "FIRST!", or several comments that said that, then yes. It's spam.
I think the only useless spam now is the people arguing over whether his comment is spam. Including myself, which is why I intend to stop, unless you have anything else to add.
Lol somehow I got the feeling that even following the "Don't Be a Jerk, it's Christmas" philosophy gets you autoblocked these days.
No more emotional response, but there is a physical response.
Not caring =/= no response. Least in my opinion.
and im still gonna say they have to care to say they dont care,.. thats a good 500-1000 characters including spaces and then they have to decide to hit enter and commit to it. just like somewhere inside yur pissed that someone gets away with something so you physically have to do something, anything to make em see it.
the reason they care is because they had enough gull to post in the first place, someone who doesnt really care doesnt do anything at all.
has anyone ever told you this lovely phrase "if you don't have anything positive to say, don't say anything?"
if people were limited in only posting productive stuff in their comments, then this place would be much quieter... besides, what gives you the right to tell someone how he or she should behave with their own personal account?
And what gives me the right to tell someone how they should behave? The fact that they're spamming useless comments.
in her own journal, hell yeah, she has every right to dictate how people should behave but this isn't her journal space (sheesh, what is it with people thinking that they own the rights to dictate behavior on sites they do not own?)
>keeps coming back and talking shit about me to other people
Who's "assmad" now, eh?
No way.
True story.
You're joking, right?
When I clicked the beta-link, I saw my own username written as "~Hardrockangel".
The symbol I am referring to is the "~", which I associate with deviantART since they've been using them for a long time already for unsubscribed / non-premium membership members. o.O
It's even the same way on the current site. Nothing changed in regards to that.
It was the first thing that caught my eye in the beta.
Guess I should just wear my glasses, then. :'D
*Checks beta*
Not sure if trolling or just over reacting for what it seems to be a motherfucking improvement taking in mind how old as fart FA code is.
Trust me...ANYTHING is an improvement here.
I've had many instances where I've had several windows open and arranged in a special way to make all the visible pixels count, and forced floating junk always sucks because I can't turn it off and it's just wasting my valuable screen-space.
Tap home.
Bam, done.
Beside's that I really like the userpage layout! I hope you air it! :)
Just my two cents on the issue~
There's a lot of little tweaks and improvements that need to go through, especially in converting many of the pages from tables to divs. Some of it will be done in the beta, some in an update to follow after.
like the banner layout but i dont like the new submission page when you click on one. it all is on the same slot. no boxes to seperate items. other then that .. meh not like anything i say helps change anything on it ..
Too bad folders haven't been implemented, since most folks seemed to want that. But if the commission page will be up (finally) again, that's at least a step in the right direction.
Overall my reaction is kinda 'meh' but I'm just your average user. I don't mind that it's changed. I think it looks sort of messy and disorganized but in time I'm sure I won't care. Let's hope that more than anything, it's more reliable, and more stable.
That said, some things will change, like the show/hide profile. It was sort of a test concept., but I think it'd be easier to limit the amount of words to be reasonable in the profile Lots of things to do still. =3
I'm going to remove it, as I think there are better ways to implement it.
the very first thing people see when they visit another user.
Has to be good. But above all, has to *be* there. Ergo a Show/hide profile button
is deadly, no matter how it's implemented. These are not the same kind of
'form-based' profiles as on, say, Forums or DevArt or wherever.
The profiles on FA are more like billboards. They announce everything about
you (as an FA member). As in, everything you want another user to know.
The last thing you want is for this to be hidden by a visitor.
More serious: Some profiles are highly designed. Took a ton of work, and aimed
at creating the right impression.
Changing the width of the profile (by putting the journal beside it), plus the larger
font, is likely to scramble a ghastly number of profiles. Especially profiles that
are precisely formatted. Ie., like mine, used as Table of Contents.
Not sure what to suggest to remedy this. Allowing the profile to push out to the
right (the way it does now) seems worth preserving? More visibility for the journal
appears to come at a mega-ghastly cost here.
That said, overall a step forward. But borders: Need them back. Important
visual feature. Ditto control over background colour (ie., light/dark). FA's current
design is quite clean. Different shading of different areas does not replicate this.
FB.
PS: Has anybody ever suggested using Search to simulate folders? As opposed to
turning the whole DB and the codebase upside down.

Looks great so far
One problem I had until just now was that I couldn't login to the beta site. It would just kick me back to the main site. I had to manually add login, to the beta site address in order to login. Another is that the "show full profile" button doesn't immediately work. I had to click something else and then go back in order for it to show. Last, I would like be able to just click my name from any page to go back to my page, without using the dropdown menu.
One last thing. If you bring back the custom thumbnails, could we have an option to disable them? I know I'm probably one of the few who likes it better without custom thumbnails, but having the option to turn them off would be great for someone like me.
....nawww that'd be silly
6... years... ago...
And some things will improve before it goes live. The userpages will be redone (again) because I just don't like them, personally. More will be made clear in the changelogs.
Sorry if this seems like a stupid question!
As of now it's like looking at a paper with no paragraphs, the defining sections are gone so it just looks like one, imposing block that runs on.
I was just like "Oh God this looks so much more inconvenient"
http://www.frostdragon.net/fa/frontpage.png
On the new front page, you can view all submissions, or by artwork, music, etc. No one art form gets first-line preference, and your choice saves between sessions (e.g. if you only want stories on the front page, you only get stories).
I realize that's pretty deviantART-influenced, but it works.
I'm excited for it, but lets hope most of the bugs can be kept at bay. :'D
In short, it's utterly unusable for me. >_<
Once the Beta site is complete will we be seeing the [beta site] as the final product to this site?
To clarify; this site will change into the actual beta site from now on?
Also, happy b day to fa, christmas, and your marriage.
Have a good day.
P.S love the new look really feels fancy on that Beta site.
Also, things will improve as we go on and in time. With other changes, we're aiming to be more transparent and regular with updates, and bettering the site across the board. It's overdue.
As you said with your statement you've (and others) been very insightful in provide much.
Tell me, has it be cumbersome in adding the server every time it experiences a crash?
In terms of budget and also wishing you had better material process.
I'm also pretty excited about the "character info" section! Will there be the ability to have multiple characters in said field, or just one?
As for the hover menus, one of the things I'd like to do is give a user setting of "hover to open" or "click to open".
Still looking over some of the differences, currently.
not like its spreading everywhere.
no
leave the layout alone and just give us fuckers folders
and the ability to custom the profile with more panels.
And profiles will be updated once we've worked more on the betas.
he knows im a dick
a lovable dick
And then of course there are other people here doing it forreal :I
the one down of txt
sarcasm not heard.
but yuh, Me/Neer bros
Other than that, looks pretty awesome.
TEST MORE.
This is barely alpha quality. In fact, it looks about as appealing as the scat art on the main page. That I have to roll back to IE to even get the lobotomized CSS and similar elements, even AFTER a full cache purge, to properly display and that even THEN you only use the dark theme insofar, is pretty sad.
Yeah, sure, it's nice and graphical and feels as if it utterly lacks direction. Half the elements lack scope or boundaries to imply who or what they belong to, and the lack of contrast makes viewing difficult at best. The elements are hardly differentiated, most haven't even changed from the current site, and many more just seem to float about aimlessly.
... please, this is not a beta. It's a first glimpse at a new CSS mockup.
I stopped reading your comment right there. I'm more than willing to listen to feedback, but when you're going to outright insult us, Feedback is good. What you wrote is not.
>after 21 Dec 2012
Do you even HTML/CSS?
I like the way everything is sectioned off on the live site and if that was implemented in the test one then I think it'd look pretty awesome.
Everything is kinda flat and just runs together. Like I said, something that can section off different parts would be great but other then that, no other complaints :3
So you should see them start trickling in soon. Perhaps this week, or at the latest after New Years. This is a very busy time of the year, so we totally understand that. =3
Take your time, we appreciate what you do :D
I'm sure there's a few more then myself holding out hope that their applications were good enough to warrant interest, hehe.
...-_-
But seriously, I say happy holidays because I acknowledge all the other holidays.
Also, mmm... eggnog.
it's a little bit harder to read, because in the submission view there are no longer separations between content containers; and the profile page looks like it cannot decide weather to remove boundaries, or to stick round containers on top of that strange aforementioned landscape.
I know, most people like all those fancy round borders and will probably hate me for making this comment.
I like to be able to see where one block of text ends and the other begins with a line, not a tall gap between the section and the other.
(probably better for people with large monitors; but hey, who cares about people with opinions that differ from majority, like myself. /sarcasm )
Don't be a jerk, it's Christmas!
LOL BUTTHURT LOLOLOLOL
I'm not sure, the deal with "no visual improvements" thing i said is because, since we get those colorful borders around the thumbnails which indicate the content level, thumbnails loading slow like hell for me, if i'm viewing pic or downloading, then pics showing up fast.
But glad to hear updates are near.
By the way, when we getting nickname change option here? Because I don't really want to register new account now. I dropped you a note if you can change my nickname, thought... possible/impossible?
;P Sword Art Online reference I see?
"If you die in the Matrix you die in real life"
There is far, far too much empty space on the profiles. Maybe make the featured thumbs bigger?
I like the top half of the user profiles, but then as you go lower, there's a ton of space open to the right (Unless that's where page shouts go?) and the watchers/watched by tabs runs together badly. It's very hard to differentiate between the two sections.
But I do understand, there's still tweaks to be done! Just my observations!
I'll be using the beta site as much as possible to find bugs. *AWAYYYY*
Like has been said, things are a bit floaty with lack of borders/separators and what-not.
LOVING the speech bubbles. Also like how they don't stretch on forever to the end of the page, but I think if they were a bit longer that'd be better so you could get more text in before it jumps to the next line.
After going through a bit of comment reading, I have to say something about the color combination is hard on the eyes. Maybe the font is too small?? (The comment sections look REALLY nice from a distance though)
I like the size of the 'select all' 'remove selected' etc buttons on the inbox pages, but I think they are SUPER ugly as is.
Also, just like the shouts request, the ability to see old journals would be FAB <3
i guess they both follow a "rectangle and cluster-fucky" layout, no offense.
*holds your face* promise me: no comment signatures
also, kudos on the button to minimize profile info.. because honestly some folks go ovvverboard.
is there any way more of the profile can show before you have to click view full profile? maybe just a few more characters, just because i have a lot of important information but it would be hidden and i'm sure most people passing through aren't going to look at a full profile.
Borders may not be the 'hip new thing' but they're used for a reason (to make things easier to read).
Tried logging in and it just re-directed me to the old FA login page which thereby transported me to the old FA.
>Not using a bunch of boxes like windows 8 or AOL form the 90s
Ishiggydiggy
Apparently the commissions tab is due to make it's come back, so hopefully us artists for hire don't have to shove all of our info on the profiles anymore.
Make a journal with all that info, and leave a link to reduce the giant amount of space you seem to talk about?
Easy solution for an actually tiny problem. :)
A lot of people don't bother to click on links. I do have information in links and yet I still get notes asking questions that would be answered if they would read the journals. The space is so limited on the new user page, I just see it being a difficulty. And I speak not just for myself. I know a lot of people like to add a bunch of information to their profiles which would be lost in the collapsible profile. I say this merely out of convenience sake of users.
i can see you 're still workin on the user pages but f rom what i saw i like where they are going
cant wait to use it, i tried loggin in but it just sent me back to the old site X3
keep up the good werk
1 - On the front page. Your design at the top of the user pages is nice with the lined almost tab-like look to them. I suggest taking that and using it on areas which should have more separation. The text helps identify the areas, but it's left drifting everywhere, where a simple design aspect such as that could really help clean it up.
2.- Almost the same note on the user pages. More specifically in the watch and watchers section. It's left very 'just drifting there' feeling. You have stated you're not happy with them yet, which I understand. ^^
As a positive note, I really like how the profile info is now side by side with the profile and latest journal, hideable profile has its pros and cons, it's nice not having to scroll a million miles to see the art, although I can see how it might be annoying for some people. But when the commission info page finally comes back people won't be needing to flash their commission infos over the profiles anymore, which would be great! :3
As for some ideas: The featured submission could be bigger or atleast scale depending on peoples screen size, it would give it much more attention. Also it might be a bit more comfortable if the gallery/scraps/journal links would be on the left side and the watch¬e buttons on the right, people usually want to look at ones gallery before watching. It'd be also handy if the watch button was found when viewing someones gallery like it was originally there.
Also you need to make FA automatically delete messages about removed watches, favorites, comments and artworks in ones favorites. It's very heartbreaking to see when someone had unfaved or unwatched you before you could delete the notice ;_;
I think thats all I needed to say.
However, I know that they are doing this for a change in pace, so I may be completely off as to what they are planning, but I will say, I am quite excited about the new banner. It looks so nice. It is larger and it feels like it fits more smoothly. It gives more room for expression, so that by itself makes me smile.
I do wonder how you plan on adding the ads, as I did not notice them, but that also could be due to the fact that this browser has hidden them. If that is the case, then I apologize in advance. Though I am quite interested in the new layout and everything else. Keep on working guys.
oh and to log in http://ui.preyfar.dev.furaffinity.net/login/
sorry i played with the URL i hope thats ok to post it D8
*shitstorm on the comments because of the "FIRST!" word*
The internet :I
I'm a little unsure about the journals and shouts being all scrunched up to the right... Also, not seeing borders around things like comments. I think the whole thing will take a bit of getting used to, but then again, I do understand that this is a beta for now, and things are still subject to change!
(when I mention logging in, its weird that it takes me to the live site to log in while logged in... so I figure it in my best interest to wait on that part!)
1280x1280 is awful small. at 300 DPI it's just above 4 inches by 4 inches. That's not even enough to fill a 8.5x11 portrait.
Or is this the new "normal"? I mean, why have custom thumbnails if they don't show up anywhere but a user's profile page?
- Who made the current seasonal banner on Fur Affinity? .. I can't seem to find the artist.. does anybody know?
Thanks in advance!
1) What does "beta" mean?
2) What is a beta website (if that's the right way to ask "what is it")?
3) Why is everything so outdated on my page on the beta--my beta page, I guess you'd call it? It's several months behind...
4) I tried logging in on the beta page, and just got redirected to the main Fur Affinity site. Why? I was already logged in on the main site.
5) Why does the beta site look so different from the main one?
6) Is this beta site brand-new? If not, why have I never heard of it before? Or have I simply not been on Fur Affinity long enough (I joined in June 2012)?
7) At the top of every page of the beta site there is this notice: "FA DEV BOX - Use at your own risk. If you die in the beta you die in real life." What does that mean??
8) I sure hope this "beta" doesn't end up replacing the main Fur Affinity site! What about that?
I think that's all. If you could answer my questions in your own good time, I would appreciate that!
Thank you in advance!
~Redstripe Cougar
4 One of the bugs is that when you access the beta, it will not sign you in. If you go up a few comments, there is actually someone who posted a link to where to go to sign in.
5 It looks so different because FA wants to update their site to look nicer and function better.
6 The beta site is brand new, but talk about it is not. There have been a few FA journals talking about its progress for a while now.
7 It's a joke. Basically it's warning you that the beta site is unstable and not to be alarmed if it crashes.
8 The beta won't be replacing the site, but the finished version OF the beta will.
What ever happened to that one decent design a few years ago that was going around?
First thing anyone's gonna see is ... that. *slow clap*
http://ui.preyfar.dev.furaffinity.net/login
Updated changelog.
I know you developers can get a little crazy adding new features, but the most important part is that users feel comfortable with what's been added, moved, and changed. The Documentation is just as important as the technical work. Thanks for remembering that.
If I had a buck for every time an over-earnest developer rolled out a change without telling anyone about it. Actually forget the buck: I'd just be happy without a pile of confused users ending up on my doorstep.
I suppose it's a free site though and you can't please everyone. Kinda gonna miss the fa blues though.
Since you are not planning on releasing the mobile website any time soon, could you please make it so the "My FA" dropdown doesn't also take you to the user's page? If it does that, it basically makes everything in that menu unusable on touch devices. The thing I LOVE about FA right now is that I can actually use a dropdown on my phone.... *NODS*
more prominently in the journals and comments
oh, and please reply via note if you do. it took me half an hour to load this monsterous page
no, really, i timed it out of curiosity -- 27 minutes and 36 seconds, wtf
FA's UI doesn't need updates, it need a complete overhaul to bring it into the 21st century. Throw out everything and start from scratch.
I agree wholeheartedly. They really should save up a couple of bucks and get someone to do it professionally.
Said that, one suggestion: make more of your changes available to beta-testers earlier. In Usability Engineering there's the saying "Test soon, test often", referring to letting real users try out new tentative design changes and collecting feedback how they are able to use it. There's also the saying "Don't ask the user, but watch him", though that might be a bit harder to do in your case (Amazon does this with massive A/B-Testing, but they have hard quantitative KPIs which they can measure, namely the conversion/buy rates).
By getting feedback earlier, you not only appreciate the users and give them a way to contribute, making them feel that this is "their FA community", but also to change course on some design elements, which might seem like a good idea when viewed in isolation, but turn out to be quite bad for a majority of users, before you invested too much time (and heart blood) in it.
Stop bitching!!!
You don't like it, then leave FA.
https://dl.dropbox.com/u/5776250/FABeta1.jpg
So yes, I do think it'd be a pretty nifty idea to make journal types for those watching out for commission slot openings, if FA would want to do that.
pfft. why am i not surprised -_-
Anyway, back on topic. I can't wait for the new updates...been years now! Would be good to see a more modern style.
I hope that new FA will be fitting to the current/modern styling standarts. Like, the current one uses tables to work out the styling. Not that it just is very outdated, ugly, and ocmplicated (nowdays that is), but my experience in web-development also brought me to the point hwere i realized, using divs brings a better structure into some things.
By the way, I am a PHP/HTML/JS/CSS developer. If help is needed, I will be happy to help. :3
Another thing that - i dunno if its planned - i think is missing is the creation of characters. I take it this page is based on something like the Yii-Framework - looking at the URLs and the HTML code - which would be very good since I am developing a new characte rmodule for Yii-Framework users. Its portable to FA...just an offer. o.o
Also, if you would like to make your site usable even for blind and partially sighted people, take a look at the following:
http://www.w3.org/WAI/intro/aria
This "standard" is readable and usable by most current browsers and screen-readers (aka narrators. used by blind and partially sighted people to read the display). Im nearly blind myself. o.o
If any futher questions are left, contact me owo
Error: unserialize() expects string as first parameter, array given in /path/to/file line nn
So you see, it tells you exactly what is wrong. It is rare that you get an odd message or sometimes just a blank screen... But yeah, PHP is very easyly debugged. JavaScript requires extra tools - like a firefox extension called FireBug - to get debugged, but even then it is not so hard. :3
ALSO. Maybe allow the artists to feature comments, pushing them to the top of this list? "Featured comments" could even be in it's own tab, so people can still see the "First/newest" comments if they still choose to... If there's a way to pull that off WITHOUT clutter of course. (DO IT. Artist's have favorite comments! Some they'd like to share with others!)
Featured and Newest art side by side? Somebody mentioned that earlier. I really like that idea! Helps the art become the first thing you see on the userpage. Which would be a really awesome feature to add to FA. Makes things... Simpler! Much simpler. That's ultimately a good goal to strive for, right?
Stacking "Artist's Comment" on top of "Picture information/statistics" would be pretty boss, too. Certainly would help out if the artist comment is being used as a "writing submission"... The option for bigger, bolder "Artist Comment" text would be GOOD, too. Just putting a better emphasis on the text would be neat.
For Writing submissions, the first paragraph could become the thumbnail. Stretched to fit in the "Newest Preview" and "Featured" sections. So people can glance at the writing, and see if they're interested enough to click on it. Not a tiny thumbnail that scrolls like deviant art. I think the tiny thumbnails can remain AS IS. A static paragraph directly taken from the writing can be the large thumbnail/"Newest Preview" image. And if there's no submitted text file, the Artist's comment can be the large thumbnail!
In the beta, it shows 69 submissions, 3 comments, 25 journals, and 3 faves.
It seems as though this info is 3-4 months old (although it is a beta)
Aside from that, I love the wide banner, as well as the "shadows" under the ads that make 'em pop out - fancy :o
Oh, and the buttons for managing comments, submissions, notes, etc. are much easier to click on - definitely a pro for me :D
Color scheme? Used to seeing the traditional dark blue - seeing shades of dark gray seems a bit awkward (or maybe it's just me).
I'm definitely looking forward to a newer FA, and Happy New Year's to everyone at FA - especially the admins who run the site and keep things in order
(call me Minka ^^ )
