Alright, So I've been thinking up a few activities and small contests to get some members a little more active. I want to set up a little contest where we can get members to show off their collections. This would not be a contest where the actual collections would be judged, because we're not 100% sure how to go about judging them. All you'd have to do would be take a nice shot of your collection your name will be put on a list and at the end of the contest we'll select a winner at random.
You can take either photos of your collection as a full display, or you may take individual images and create a collage. We'd prefer the collection to be at least half bones, so if you have hides, wet specimens, crafted displays, taxidermy, etc. in the image. Remember, the contest in the end will be random luck, so don't be afraid to enter in you only have a few smaller pieces, or if some of you collection is flawed.
You NEED TO TELL US WHAT YOU HAVE! You don't have to put numbers or anything on the photos, just let us know in the description what all you have there. It's okay to label some items as 'unidentified' if you are not sure what they are. If you would rather not upload the photos to FA we can take photo submissions through the notes, just send in a note with 'Contest' as the subject and a link to the image and a description of the collection.
If you already have an image in out gallery of your collection and would like to enter the contest, just let us know and we'll throw your name in the hat, so to speak.
There will be 3 categories:
Beginners - This will be open to those starting out their collection, it's open to novice collectors with a few bones or hides, maybe a skull or 2, this will give those who are just starting out a chance to show off their little hoard without feeling like they'll be overshadowed by those who've been doing this for a while, or people with more resources to gather larger or more impressive things.
Established - This section will be reserved for those of us who've been doing this for a while, this is for anyone who has a larger selection on bone and skulls. Generally speaking it's supposed to be opened to animals native to North America (this is a somewhat ethnocentric rule, but as far as we can gather most members are based in the US and Canada, but if you ARE in another country you are still 100% welcome to enter, you can either choose to enter in this category or the next one)
Advanced/Exotics - This category is open for people who have things in their collections what are more on the 'unusual' side. Generally speaking we're talking about non-typical things, like coyote parts, fox, raccoon, deer, etc. If you have something more unique, like hyena, monkey, kangaroo, antelope, hedgehog or other things you just don't see every day.
Again, if you live say in Australia and have several native species like wombat, kangaroo, monitor lizards, or emu, that might not really be exotic to you, you can choose which category you'd like it to be grouped into.
In the end the winners will be chosen at random, so it's not like an impressive collection alone will win it for you. We want to give everyone a fair chance, since some people might have the resources to accumulate rare items while others are just starting out, or only collect what they find.
You MAY enter 2 categories, if you have some native species and a few exotics!
PRIZES!
We're thinking the prizes will most likely be artwork, if anyone in the group would like to donate time to help out with the prizes that would REALLY be appreciated!
I know skulligans and I are already going to be donating some sort of art to contribute to the prizes, but if anyone else would like to help we'll announce that and any other information about the contest as we get entries and hammer out details.
THIS CONTEST IS OFFICIALLY TAKING SUBMISSIONS AND WILL END FEBRUARY 28, WINNERS ANNOUNCED MARCH 1st!
So get those cameras out and show us what you got!!!
If you have any questions, please ask and we'll get back to you ASAP!!!

Once we have this one finished up Skulli and I were discussing doing a "name that skull" thing for some of the new-comers to the practice. We'll be looking for art donations as small prizes maybe you'd like to contribute there too. Nothing huge just headshot sketches or whatever you can contribute :D

Maybe a good amount of people from Europe or other countries will join in and we can make new categories, I'm not sure how common Coyotes and Grey Fox pelts are over your way, but I know I see people on DA from UK and other areas asking about them and I know they aren't supposed to be shipped out of the country.
So my collection with opossum, coyote, fox, skunk, white tail, etc. might be VERY exotic to you, corvids, roe deer, hedge hog, and finn raccoon might be something you guys see often but are pretty rare over here.
Do you get chamois over there? You have so much more wildlife than us though xD it's depressing.
Never heard about the pelts not being allowed to ship. I think there are some taxes to pay, but *shrugs* :3 I'm hopefully getting a Grey Fox for my Bday. I wanted a cross, but they're harder to get.

It's technically illegal for you to ship any non domestic animal parts out of the US, even to Canada or Mexico. But I know people do it pretty often, you just run the risk of it being confiscated. If you want to do it legally you have to apply for a export licences, which is I think a $100 fee to obtain, then X amount for each package to cover the time it takes for customs to inspect each parcel. I was looking into getting one because I've had a lot of people interested in my stuff "across the pond" :p
I've personally never seen a chamois pelt (much less skull) in person, or really even on the Taxi.net forums. (quick search - the full hides go for close to $1000 that that pelt wouldn't even be tanned @.@)
Cross fox can be pricey, but not uncommon they run about $150-200 but you can get something for display, like a wall hanger for MUCH less (like $80)
Wasn't ever intending selling things :P but glad I know! Cheers! It's different in Europe ^^

But the laws ARE there to prevent any other specie from becoming a thing of the past. So although we can't have these things, it's something for the better of the species. There are a ton of loopholes though, like with crows, you can't sell, buy, or trade them, but I learned recently if you acquire them from legal hunting and pest control you may have them. You can even pass them out as 'gifts' just not for trade or personal gain.
Some of our laws are REALLY weird, like I live in Pennsylvania, we can't collect shed antlers... I don't know what that helps...
Some states you can't have a bear pelt if the paws are not present. Domestic cats and dogs are also illegal to sell and trade as pelts, but bones and such are 100% ok.
DAMN!? no antlers? why ;_______; that would make me so sad. Antlers are my biggest want, to hell if I saw one laying around OwO

And it's only sheds... other antlers are 100% legal
With the birds, I think it's any bird that migrates, any song bird, and any bird of prey are 100% off limits, no matter how abundant.
It's actually something I joke about when I hear people cry about animal rights, that cats have more rights than us, a cat can kill and carry around a blue jay or something with no consequence, I can do the same and get a fine. :p
Gotta see how far I get done with this commission first (: Gah Can't wait to see xD
We'll also be doing another type on contest, mostly just for fun for some of the 'newbies' it'll be a "name that bone/skull" game that we'll need more prize help with (nothing big, just sketches or whatever you can provide)

Beginners / Established I think... Dunno hehe
.....
Coolest competition ever!! Really wanna see everyone elses collections! So fascinating

If you'd be up for it we have another small contest we'll be organizing, it'll be a "name that bone/skull" thing that we'll need prizes for. I'm going to make ATCs for that game, but the more help we can get the better! :D

and glitter (I don't have an example, forgot to take a picture before I shipped)
Can do any pose for all.
They are about 3"x5" depending on pose and character
And I will be willing to do for the other contest, would it be just that one or both?
The contest we have in mind for later will be something like one winner each week, I'm going to draw up a bunch ATCs of skull and bone art but I'd like to offer a variety of prizes, so if you wouldn't mind tossing in a hand maybe making a few keychains with skull or bone art on it?
If you don't want to be bothered with a lot of shipping you can send them to me to distribute, if you're up for it :3
And for your time I can draw you something in exchange if you like, something more complete, like a portrait or something.
You can help out in this one too, once the ball gets rolling and we get some more entries and people donating art we can figure out specifics. I may have to make another category or 2, it all depends on participation.
I'm not sure about the category, though. Beginners or Established? Personally I see my collection as quite small, so Beginners is probably the way to go. :3
(A great contest, by the way! I always love taking pictures of my collection. Don't know why, but it's really relaxing for some reason.)
I'll send my post in a bit
http://www.furaffinity.net/view/9775364/ here is my entry thanks for the chance ^^
Heck, I'll give it a shot. This is only a portion of my collection, and I have new pieces on their way right now. I'll let you judge which category this qualifies in as I have North American, Australian, even India species.
you tell me what you think the category I should be in all animals are in north american
