Two notes in three whole months is NOT "badgering" at all, regardless of the cost of the commission. I'd describe it more like "barely communicating". When I commission someone I poke them at LEAST once a week.. I try not to do it more than that though, but yeah.. That is a pretty rude reply.

I sure would venture a guess it's an artist we've used in common, although they don't do YCH, so it can't be the first person I have in mind...

Anyway, yeah getting called on the carpet for badgering about something you were told to expect when it's really taking a long time, and asking twice over the course of 3 or more months is not anyone's definition of badgering. Except someone who's apparently looking for not only a reason to go back on a promise, but make you feel guilty and be the bad guy while they're at it, plus be at fault for doing wrong on a deal in the first place. WHAT A DICK.

This is why YCH is just a gyp. It just feeds lazy artists who want to paint-by-numbers something they've already worked out, perhaps something they can mass produce even, and just sketch some minor details from a reference into the piece and say they're done. I mean how accurate and meticulously detailed are the skin, facial details, claws, tails, fur/patterns, fluff, etc., in these? Are they more like stick-your-head-through-the-hole affairs at the county fair? I mean HONESTLY.

I doubt I will pay for many more of these. I've had some satisfactory works done because the artist has done me before in non-canned poses. Yet usually, the YCH for me is a solo affair with few other people crowding my image for attention-stealing real estate.

I think you were in the right. I know that the one piece of art that was comissioned for me (which was free), the artist and I remained in constant contact. I might be new here, but it kinda seems like common sense for someone to let you know what's going on with art they are suppose to be doing for you. Two notes in the time span of 3 months is no where NEAR badgering. And the not they sent was just....it seemed very rude.

I guess it would depend on the wording of your notes and the current stress levels of the artist, but i would not think it unfair to be kept in the loop about your purchase.
I tend to not be told about whats going on with plans involving me, and then the other parties are pissed when i make other plans, and they were depending on me being there to take up some slack on the cost of an event.
I generally reply to then "i had no idea what was gong on, i tried contacting you guys a number of times with no response so i figured you really didn't want my company."

Both notes were somewhere along the lines of .

"Hey there! Just wondering if you still planned on making that second picture for me! Just wondering.

Thanks ^.=.^! "

perhaps change the wording to something like "hey, just keeping in touch! how are things going?" then sneak an inquiry into a conversation

If there is something that alot of artists lack in the fandom, its communication. To respond to a customer in a aggressive manner is pretty unprofessional. Free picture or not, there should always be communication. Its not like you were bothering him/her every day about it, perhaps if the artist had a more clear talk towards you to say when they would do it, their schedule and such so you have an idea of when they would start it this sudden out burst wouldn't happen.

Forbid the original picture from being posted. Use your character rights. They can deny you what they promised, sure, but you can flex your muscles too.

I wouldn't call this rude as much as stupidity and laziness. It is very easy to talk about the hard-working and underpaid artists we have in the fandom, but we also have our fair share of the self-important and unprofessional. This person clearly made a promise to try and make up for a mistake, only to become lazy about it later on and tried to use your dual notes as means to get out of their obligation. You are doing yourself a disservice by not naming them so others can avoid going through what you endured.

Yes. There is a right way and a wrong way to do this, informing people is different than starting drama. As long as you stick to stating facts there shouldn't be an issue but it is completely up to you.

People can be rude for a multitude of reasons to be honest. After all, real life might suck, and it really impacts our social skills.

But even people who are going through a tough time can still take the time to at least compose a NICE response. If he had the time to write that short note, he could have also taken the time to think about his words instead of just wanting to send off the note.

I could probably think up of a few more reasons for both sides til I was blue... well, more blue in the face, but that's my own thoughts on this situation.

Why not just, you know, forget about it? As if you didn't already have more than enough pictures of yourself. Sure, the artist may not have responded in the best possible manner, but with so many pics, why keep holding onto it? Just forget about it.

For me they acted just like an asshole. You had full right to ask for something you were said to expect, especially as you asked in polite way. For sure it can't be called as badgering. I fully agree with bear-paws, in my opinion this artist just doesn't want to move their ass to work and wants to put blame and feeling bad on you.

Sadly some artists happen to act in very bitchy way, thinking that being famous makes them better than other people. I also had 2-3 times experience with such artists, and I'm not going to do buisness with them anymore again. And about YCH-auctions... I'm also against them, it's just because of the artist's lazyness who doesn't do much and takes for that a ridiculous amount of money, for something you can'r even decide what is on he pic >.=.<

I respectfully disagree with your comment on YCH's. You're really calling artists lazy? Come on dude. Not only is that just as rude as the person who bitched Buck out for no reason, but it's also incredibly inconsiderate. Regardless of if its a YCH auction or not, an artist puts their soul and being into every picture. And in this fandom, they're lucky if they can even make the equivalent of the American Minimum Wage. Everyone can have their opinion, and I respect yours even if I disagree. And the YCH auctions means that artists makes an art that already has partly done, not allowing the commissioner to decide how the picture looks like, because it's already decided upfront by the artist. And as it's auction price usually is 2-3 times higher than regular commission where commissioner decides what's on the picture. So how would you call it dirrirent than "the more money possible with the less work possible"?

And it's not only my opinion but also MANY other people thinks similar. And I'm not willing to offend artists, just saying it's the easiet way of making big money for them. And as the commissioner, from my point of view, why should i pay so terriblly much for something I can't even decide about?

Not true. Many artists draw for a variety of reasons. Not everyone throws their soul and being in it.

And many artists here make far more than $7.25 an hour in total over the course of the month if a person worked full time, 40 hours a week. That's federal minimum wage there if a state does not have any higher. And a lot of these artists have actual jobs of their own as well.

Artists can be lazy if they want to be. I happen to agree with Raventhen on this one. YCH's are more of the money makers and I've seen people bid as far as 750 USD for one pic position. That's rent for a 1 bed, 1 bath apartment + water and electric right there and still put food on the table where I am. Nice apartments too. It also sucks when you can't participate in them because you are mated and the artists commissions are constantly closed.

However, i do realize art if rather hard work. I compose music myself. Not that great at it but it takes months to put together a piece when it comes to classical, which is the genre I make.

Agree, XavierB, many artists have also work and I believe those are often who make YCH because don't have much free time but still want to make money. Know few artists who don't work, and commissions are their only income. And they are artists that make many commissions in normal prices. They are almost alway open and thanks to normal prices almost always with full slots. Because they need to care of customers as they are their bread givers. Of course it's not a rule, just a thing I noticed.

It is pretty rude to call an artist lazy for doing YCH auctions. If people pay for it and like what they get, it's a perfectly reasonable way to make money. It still takes just plenty of effort to outline the overall image. And most of all, if you don't like YCH, don't buy it. Simple as that. Let the artist make money the way they want to, and if they aren't taking commissions, tough shit. There really is no need to insult an artist like that just because they're not taking commissions.

Calling them just money-makers is not insulting, but statement based on the facts. Same I don't feel offended if someone call me a fag, because it true statement, not an insult. And here like on the market, some care for customers and are customer-focused and some care only about money. So the question is: to who the customer will come back?

The hardest part the artist has to do is get the coloring right and the shading on those YCH's auctions. Coming up with an idea and doing a very rough sketch takes most artists 30 mins at most? Maybe an hour for some of the slower ones and they normally do it with little difficulty.

And no I am not insulting them for not taking commissions. I simply said it kind of sucks because of it. Tough shit for not accepting that. Perhaps read and stop intending our opinions to be 100% negative. :P

Sorry, but I don't go around, praising every artist for all the good work they do. If an artist wants to be liked, they gotta earn it and they will be judged by the content of their character, not their works. Yes I said "judge", lets all be furries and get butt hurt now. :D

Just saying. I don't automatically like and be 100% respectful to a person because they are doing something I cannot do. The music world is certainly like that, and so is the art world. Artists will get criticized for just about anything they do and the same goes with musicians like myself. If the artist has a problem with that, that's their issue for taking things like this personally. Not me or anyone else. I like many artists and talked to many and they are really nice people usually. But in my opinion, I will insult who I feel needs to be, like who I feel should be liked, and judge who I wish to because we all do it like you are right now by reading this.

And yes, I do know what popularity is like because I've been in an artists position before except for a different reason.

i think you were in the right and i also agree with others above. the artist should be named so we know not to deal with him/her i commission when i can and i don't want to deal with someone like this.

You were not in the wrong. If artists want their reputation good, they better comply with demands at least somewhat or at least communicate with their people. Many people pay quite a large sum of money for a photo that if on real market to the world, only worth about 50 to 100 USD at most if not cheaper because of how quickly people can make them. That's from an economic standpoint.

Sure artists get bashed by people, but they should've expected that upon entering this field. It's called life. It happens to me all the time when i work with idiots who don't know what an ethernet cable is when I am trying to help repair their computer.

So don't feel bad for what you've done. You made the right move and 90% of others would agree. The artist is in the wrong, despite the fact its free art. He should've communicated with you a bit. If he continues like this, he will lose business with many others.

It is good to know if an artist disrespects their customers. It is basically entering into a contract, and I personally wouldn't want to take a chance with an artist who didn't live up to their end of the bargain. There are plenty of other artists I'd rather gamble on.
