Is it rude not to thank people for watches?
First of all, I'm not dead. Just haven't had much to post (been drawing personal art that I want to remain personal), and haven't been able to think up anything for a journal.
My ad's run out, and since its start I've gained 131 new watchers. Thank you new watchers! And thank you old watchers too, of course.
Which brings me to something. I've noticed that a lot of people leave "thanks for watching" type comments as a general policy. I'm more used to DeviantArt, where such a thing is fairly rare and sometimes frowned upon, so in general I haven't been doing that. I do usually visit new watchers' pages and poke around a bit, but I almost never leave a "thank you" comment.
Is that bad? Should I be thanking people individually? Is there some unspoken code of courtesy I am not familiar with that dictates that one is required to comment thanks on watchers' pages? I mean this unsarcastically. If it's a thing I am supposed to be doing, I will do it from here on out.
Thoughts?

Most people leave it as a courtesy, but some other people find it annoying, and most generally don't mind if you leave no comment.
Personally, I'm impartial. If I've got spare time, I'll thank the watcher, but it's no biggie if someone doesn't thank me.
Otherwise I try to do it when I can. Some users even post journals as a massive thanks when there are a whole bunch of new viewers or favorites of their work.
I dunno, I just find them obnoxious somehow. Like "omg I don't care that you have a note that says you hate these shouts but im gonna do it anyway because that way people might see me and watch me too". That's SOMETIMES the case. Sometimes it's just plain ignorant. Other times, it's actually trying to be nice, but the copy-paste nature of those shouts gradually become more and more meaningless so you may as well not do them. You're turning into a spammer.
Though it's not that the watches/faves are unappreciated. It's good to be thankful to someone for it definitely, but it's better to do that with submission comments or via milestone journals, you know? Just be sociable with your watchers/fans to a degree. It wouldn't be a bad idea to take a minor interest in what they upload themselves. If you're gonna thank someone for a watch/fave, do better than that and fave something else or be like "hey thanks! I like your art/the way you ___ in it!" or whatever.
The people who watch me for whatever reason I'm generally friendly with, and I thank them for their comments by commenting back to them the best I can. I feel it goes without saying that I'm thankful for the watches and faves I get. Just, like, hey, they're people too you know?
And then there's a lovely compromise - comment replies and taking a modicum of interest in people who like you. It's not that you gotta be buddy-buddy and watch-back, just like, be decent and don't take it all for granted, see.
As things are at this point, I pretty much always respond to comments. I don't get enough that it becomes a huge nuisance to do so, so why not.
I suppose the same applies to watches; I don't get so many that it's impractical to thank all of them, so I might as well.
If you'd prefer, it also might just be good to thank people en masse in a journal, sort of like you've done here. But it's really your call.
Also, yes, you're a horrible person for not thanking peeps. XD
