Sounds like a lawsuit in the making. Not allowing a patient to be fully aware when disclosing issues or even not providing written documentation for later might be something to look into.

You would think that he would be more professional than this and that the hospital would keep a recent heart attack survivor out of infected areas.

If it's a public hospital I doubt they have private rooms for every single general cardiac care patient to keep them in isolation away from things like colds.

Yes, most cardiac care wards have differing levels of monitoring from High, middle and lower. ICU and Cardiac Emergency areas are the highest depending on if the hospital has one or the other or both. General cardiac care wards are usually for monitoring cardiac care related patients who no longer need to be in the emergency areas and/or recovering from cardiac surgery, this is the middle level. Lower level areas are usually outpatient rather than inpatient and provide services such as cardiac investigation and/or rehabilitation.

The names may differ from hospital to hospital and some levels may not be available at some hospitals.

Seriously? A lawsuit over that? Lawsuits are for gross negligence or illegal/criminal behaviour. This event while frustrating and possibly not the best in terms of how it was handled hardly justifies that.

Sadly, of late a lot of doctors seem to have technical intelligence, but no practical intelligence. Like this story here. The doctor has to have known the man wanted the info and was waiting for it. No matter how big the doctor's diploma, he had to have noticed his patient was groggy and had been dosed with sleeping pills. He should have come back later, not tried speaking with a partially unconscious man.

Please...go spend 4 years in college then 4 years in medical school, then complete a 4 year residency before you can be called a doctor and see if you can do any better. Then you can say stupid crap like that.

That is a very unfair generalisation, of course it's based on what you've experienced and you can only draw conclusions from that. but I have met many good doctors, surgeons, anesthetists and specialists. Some I've met haven't been great but a lot of them have.

I work in a trauma center, so I have seen a lot too. Doctors don't have god complexes, they just have a better understanding about the human body, health, and medicine, than the patients who like to treat themselves. Hospitals are also vastly understaffed with doctors, leaving much of them over worked, over stressed, and being forced to keep very tight schedules. Its clear you don't know what you're talking about.

This kind of response is basically a fallacy. You don't have to spend years studying art to recognize utter crap. You don't have to study engineering for the allotted number of years to realize engineers have zero common sense (which they do). A subjective opinion can be just that about a profession without having to 'walk a mile in their shoes'.

If I remember correctly. A patient has the legal right to ask to see his medical folder. When he will feel a little better he will just have to go to the archive and take a look at it.

I had to stay in the hospital after two major surgeries on my feet. First stay was alright had room all to myself for the night, no problems other then feeling like crap. Second stay was total bullshit plus feeling like crap. I had this doctor/nurse or whoever the fuck he was pinch my toes to make sure I got feeling down there. I just had fucking major surgery done on my whole foot. When I told the doctor about that he was wtf as well. Guy should not have done that. I refuse to ever go through that again.

Terribly sorry about all that hun. I know the feeling. I hate doctors and hospitals. I remember one time I was sent to the ER because I had a temperature of 105 degrees. I had to wait 30 minutes to be admitted when there was only 3 other people in the ER that I could see. And then they ran a whole battery of tests that took about an hour total and yet I was there for 6 hours after that before someone litereally just popped their head in and was like "Oh hey, you just have the flu." -.-

Well to be fair, if you go to the ER they do not take anything lightly, which is why it's labelled "emergency." And in the ER there could only be 3 people that you see, but another 15 you don't. I'm not saying you don't have a right to be frustrated, but it really goes a long way to see the other point of view.

They are not properly handling the environment of a hospital in that hospital. There should be steps taken to ensure germs are not spread around and judging from what happened, they aren't doing their job properly. Of all the places, a hospital can be one of the most dangerous places to be, epsecially when bed-ridden

best thing to do: have someone, family or friends, be around so they don't do things they shouldn't do to your dad like give him pills then abruptly wake him.

everything that the doctor told your father should be in his file you should be able to get it by asking the charge nurse. As far as your father getting a cold goes It is unfortunate, but some times all the washing in the world won't stop infection from spreading.

I know a lot of what the hospital staff does doesn't seem to make sense, but believe me everything that they do is to ensure that the patient stays healthy. Even waking the patient up every 2 hours at night.

Don't you just fucking hate it when shit like this happens? I had to go to the hospital to have my gallbladder removed, and the damn nurse kept poking my sides asking if it hurt; when I had just got through telling her exactly where it hurt (it was a complete circle around my chest, just underneath my ribcage). I told her it felt like someone was stabbing their open hand- palm-side up- under my ribcage, curling their fingers around something, and twisting. She nodded, told me to lay on my side, then proceeded to poke my side (under the ribcage of course, since everyone knows that's where you start poking people. </sarcasm>). I yelled out and asked her why the hell she did that, when I had just told her where it hurt. She replied that she was just doing her job, and needed to be sure. I felt like stabbing her with a dull broom handle.

I could understand her doing that if I had just said "I don't know where it hurts, exactly." and that was it (though why anyone would be stupid enough to say that, I don't know. It's your body, you know where it hurts. Or you at least know the general area.), but I told her exactly where it hurt. And she poked me there anyway. Does she have the attention span of a goldfish, or something? I swear, in a rush to cover everybody's asses, they seem to have forgotten about yours.

I really wish they'd stop putting people with contagious diseases in hospitals, at least hospitals as they are now. Injuries, that's fine, but diseases need to be isolated. It seems unbelievably primitive that we're still just doing the whole "stick everyone not feeling well in one big building" thing. Not to mention that with all the antibiotics, it's a great environment for breeding superbugs.

If people have dangerous contagious diseases they are usually kept in isolation, a cold is a cold, it can become more dangerous but hospitals are full of sick people so of course there is more chance of catching something.

I have to agree. There should be an on-call doctor assigned to his case that not only can help interpret his charts but also go over the doctors last reports with you on request.

That's fine if the hospital has the staff availabe to do that, I doubt many public hospitals have that luxury.

I'm not sure what Canadian health standards are and I won't speculate, but in the US every department of a hospital that's considered acute care(cardiology, neurology, nephrology, hepatology to name a few) is required to have at least one on-call doctor at all times as well as the staffed doctor during regular hours. This usually ends up with the on-call doctor doing three rounds during the day and treating it as an off day otherwise, but at least one is required to be scheduled and available to answer both staff and patient calls. Without an on-call doctor at least clearly scheduled, hospitals around here can get fined or shut down quickly by joint commissions.

This reminds me of when mom had to have surgery for...well, a volleyball-sized infection in her belly...we're still trying to figure out how that happened...the only thing we can think of is a bad hernia surgery about a decade ago...mom was in the hospital for a while, with a vacuum pump...I was helping by spending the night (always my dad or me) and earlier in the day, a nurse had showed us how to use the clips on the tube so mom could unscrew it and have a break from the pump so she could go to the bathroom. It was late, but mom needed to go, so she called for the nurse. Evidently the head nurse and assistant nurse assigned to our floor for the night were both busy, and a third nurse not knowing what was going on stopped by. When the nurse came in, mom explained that she needed to go, and the nurse actually said, "Well, you didn't have any trouble last night!" Mom explained about how a nurse had showed us how to unscrew the tubing, and the rude nurse is all like, "We're not supposed to do that." I don't remember much of what else was said, but mom go so mad she sent the nurse away (after a rather angry soliloquy) and just used the portable thing instead. The head nurse later came in and apologized, although she said that wasn't how the pump was supposed to work, either. No? Then why would they freakin' tube have clips to hold the suction, with a place that unscrews in the middle...that's how we were told to use mom's portable one when she came home, which had to same kind of tubing...and that wasn't the only problem with that stay...

I tell you...I have worked in hospitals... it is major hectic & there was this one nurse that hardly ever put on gloves. It wore me out... & afterwards I too got a cold.

It is like a juggling act. So many patience & so little time. Also your feet gets so sore & it is hard to keep people straight, so most info is put into charts. Maybe you can get a hold of a copy of his charts & when you can, sit down his doctor & have him explain it in laymen terms.

Seems that the family needs to arrange a person appointment with the doctor. Hospitals can be so hectic...

Sorry to hear about your dad's experiences, unfortunately unless you have coverage for a private room you will be put in general wards with other people. The part with the doctor wasn't as good as it could've been but if he had other patients to attend to he probably thought it best to at least try to tell your dad rather than not saying anything at all. If you arrange an appointment with the doctor or ask to see them again to go through your father's condition now that he's not under a soporific. I know it's frustrating and you'd like the best attention given to your dad but it's a hospital and many people are in the same situation.
