Home Brew Races
:o I'm actually curious how many people actually took the time to make their own race of critters. And how long have you been working on them? Still working on them? :> Do any of you plan on making anything featuring them besides art o'course?
I hope to do a little field guide to my races when I get them done. It's a lot of work cause there's a lot of research involved to make them functional but it's actually pretty fun. I've learned a lot by just working on my own stuff.
What about folks who make characters based on other people's creations? Did you want to make one mostly cause they're neat looking? Interesting history? :o
Mostly I wanted to get that FAP journal off my page |D but hey I'm actually curious.

Its hard to be creative when your young and people mock you an your ideas.
I may dig them up again... I should..
I would say resurrect em, may find a name you like this time around. :>
I often wondered weather to make them Bi-pedal or Taurs.. then ... why not both, alter their bodies as need for terrain..
A Hive mind, so when you speak to one of them.. you are speaking to all of them... they have organic space craft.. and avoid wars by either Hiding their planets.. ie; You do not see this planet and maybe you would like to alter your course for no reason, have a nice day.
..Or they move the enemy away... They dislike killing if at all possible.. being highly empathic.
I made my own race because there were lots of space pirates, but no Space Vikings. A niche that obviously needed to be filled. *Nods and turns up Immigrant Song.* AAAAAAYEEEEAaaahAAH!
Vibroaxe. Not intended for surgery, culinary applications, or other slicing tasks requiring care and dexterity.
Bald Sloth
It is derived from the three toed sloths. As a mammal, the bald sloth is not actually hairless. It just has a very short, fine fur like the Devon Rex cat. This short fur provides a perfect hold for symbiotic cyanobacteria. Sloths in general have a mutualistic relationship with algae. They provide a habitat. The algae provides camouflage.
The Bald Sloth takes this much further by growing significant cyanobacteria colonies on itself. Such large colonies provide much better camouflage than just about any other animal on earth. The long strands of cyanobacteria hanging from the sloth act as a ghillie suit and also conceal the animals scent. In an emergency situation, the sloth can even eat portions of the photosynthesizing bacteria to stay alive.
Precisely regulated insulin levels control the amount of nutrients from the sloth available to the bacteria colonies. This exchange of nutrients both controls growth and relieves some of the pigmentation requirements of the cyanobacteria so that it can maintain the optimal camouflage colours (reds, browns, blues, and greens, depending on the location and season). It is not uncommon to see a bald sloth sporting all four colours in a mottled pattern.
Willow branches are not quite accurate. Cyanobacteria usually form long strands or ribbons rather than conventional leaves and stems. Then again, there are tremendous varieties of cyanobacteria* so they could develop leafy structures. The coloration is also quite diverse.
*everything from seaweed to lichens contain cyanobacteria.
I love doing the culture aspects of my races. It seems like the most fascinating part to me really. :D But it sounds like you've got a really interesting project there. Can't wait to see whatever you put out for it.
I made a cabbit Character becasue I really like the Idea of to creatures being one type of species , it really captures me , I love different types of races, not just for art but for The actul History or just the race all it self.
Ooh, a field guide would be neat :D
so bored...
for the time being the only race that I am creating and my character Kamillie, that I am still creating and mixing. The only thing that is ready is the history of 25 pages of her
I love your new icon by the way ^_^
Mostly it consisted of two or four legged creatures loosely based off of dogs, cats, kangaroos, or dragons that would change shape according to elemental crystals they ate. It's not very creative, but hey, sounded awesome when I was 10ish and I always wanted to use them in a game of sorts. But, it'd more than likely be seen as a pokemon rip-off or something of that nature, so I doubt they go anywhere but in my head. Still fun to do at least and I totally made up an awesome world for them to live in~
Although more often than not, I think people make species or races that look "cool", compared to ones with history. Personally, I think well thought-out creations tend to be more interesting (and nerdy with as much research as you can cram in) and entertaining to make up. Not that you can't also do it for looks~ :3
And yeah I've seen races that were meant to be both visually and mentally appealing more than one or the other.
I have this char ever since 2002 I believe. I keep changing something. or something.
Here is what I got him to look so far: http://i512.photobucket.com/albums/.....refsheet-1.png I've been thinking of adding more fur into his legs feet just as his hands and even might give him a fluffy tail. http://i512.photobucket.com/albums/.....e/refsheet.jpg And this contains the naked body as I told you a bit rather girlish on the hips. :P I love those kind of legs, I got them myself.
That Jacket is one of my favorites, but I always felt it to be somewhat not flexible enough for this char. His movements were limited thanks to the horns. He is unable to sleep like normally we would, not even by side, but just like some dog or cat laying their muzzle on the floor.
I guess I should explain how this guy came to my mind. This creature has an abnormal power and knowledge which all comes from one place: his gemstone. This gemstone looking closely looks like an entire galaxy inside. The idea of this gemstone was inspired by two things: MiB, Orion the cat had the galaxy on his necklace as the size of a marble and Sonic The Hedgehog has gemstones with incredible power.
The crown of horns is actually something I would like to have, I love the structure of dragons so I got inspired by dragons for this design, I could had gone with just horns, but I have a funny structure that allows me to hide my eyes from the sun, so made me think of hiding his eyes. I have honey, yellowish eyes, but thanks to my design they look dark brown or black. So the same goes for this char.
The previous designed I showed you, he looked more like a human, I've been trying to make them look more like animals rather than humans, the body looked way too human for this I decided to add him a fluffy hair. It is also a contradiction in here, as you can see he is both sharp and spiky and yet remains fluffy. Some parts of his body will also be hard, not just the tail and the crown.
The tailed came as this after talking with Lintu (here at FA, same name), I wanted to make a fluffy tail but was having trouble, but she told me that he should have something more like his crown, and like any ambitious person I wanted both, a most original design came to me. For this I based myself of the structure of the neck and back of a dragon I drew ( http://www.furaffinity.net/view/1485668/ ) which you'd realize he also holds one of those gemstones. I'm thinking of basing other parts of this dragon I've shown you and using them into this guy when I create a full naked body reference.
He might end up being red because Katie suggested, but thinking of making his paws darker or perhaps lighter. A different color and as well someo other pats of his body. I'm thinking of giving him a blue winter coat and red would remain as the summer coat.
I even went as far as to put a little info on the race as told by a scientist in my scraps. It is still a work in progress because I can not think of a name for their home planet.
I guess you could say I've built races with my Instinctive stuff but, due to the nature of that particular universe simply being our world with anthro folks in it, the religions and customs are tied to actual religions and customs here. I'll do the research on the folklore of the particular area I plan to base the story out of and work from there.
I used to have a pretty extensive write-up for the dragons in my Prophet comic. Thing is that all kinda' dropped of the radar when I decided to focus on school and college. Though I have what could be considered the story's resource book lying somewhere in this mess of a room I'm in, I doubt any of it would hold up. Not much from my early high school days have withstood the test of time.
It was something that was really fun to do, though. Diving through gobs of stories, myths and religious philosophies and coming up with something new. I miss that kind of stuff. = )

Then the holographic people (one example, Annie Virus): http://www.furaffinity.net/view/1419935/

However, for a comic I work on with a friend, we both collaborated on a race of snake creatures that have split lower bodies. The hugest problem -I- have with these critters is movement, which I've been trying to rationalize for the better half of six months with various sketches. I believe I've gotten it to work finally, but that's just their movement alone! O: The creatures themselves have been in the making for the better half of two years, to the point we're making subspecie for these guys.
Originally, they were desert-people, mostly nomads, but due to the 'adaption', they're now heavily inspired by the Empire of Man from WH40k. lol. Even made an alphabet for them, lol.
Another race that I made is a dolphin-people, originally highly bureaucratic. But because I'm german and not english, I had to make them less bureaucratic, as I simply didn't know all the proper terms, lol.
I have pictars, but that of the rats - Alekians - is extremely old (and not drawn by me) and that of the dolphins (Isegun) is a pip by...I think gunmouth that I slightly modified using MSpaint.
I should get a commish for each of those from some artist that I watch or something. <.< *hinthint* =P
<.<
>.>
<.<
>.>
lol only if you really want to commission of them. XD
(I'm poor D=
Lucky that I don't have to pay rent due to parents.)
ANYWAYS.
If yo ever have a slot free (or want to shove one into your current list), I'd possibly ask for a pictar or two, you getting monies in exchange. Should we discuss further stuff on PM? Y/N?
they're kinda silly though.
I have tried to do my own species..^_^;..but it always seems to come out looking like something someone else has done.
Ive been wanting to make a Ruke ..because theyre hot . Which is my honest opinion..: x
The only one that's really worth mentioning at this point is a species whose members look for all the world like sacks full of jellyfish... because they basically are. The individuals are translucent little pancakes of muscles and nerves, with one side covered in short feelers and the other left rough and flat as a sort of vestigial shell. They're dumb alone, but when they all pile on together, their feelers let the whole colony act as a single brain. The evolutionary explanation for some of this is present, but unimportant.
Such a species would have a hard time making first contact, since they can literally entertain concepts of "a little bit pregnant" or "fatal but not serious." Some of the greatest minds in their recorded history have resulted from one rolling colony falling all over another and merging into one unwieldy persona. The very idea of recording history wouldn't catch on until well into their technological development, since trading or saving memories is as simple as making one little jellyfish hold onto everything relevant and throwing him out to a colony in better shape. I can't even imagine what their government would look like, or what they'd go to war over.
By the by, the rukes? <3.
(Incicentally, I love the pictures you've made of your races. I thought they were really beautiful creatures.)
They looked much different back then.
Daisy is my flagship for her species.
Actually a while ago I was thinking about posting a "How did you violate intellectual property rights?" journal concerning character creation. I've always enjoyed dragons, and was drawn to mascot type characters, probably because they can get away with being a-holes cuz you either can't stay mad at them or they have a high tolerance for physical abuse. So I based previous characters off creatures like Yoshi, Pokemon, and more recently, a digimon.
But its funny... I actually never thought of creating one and it does sound interesting! Maybe I should experiment some.
I had a subspecies of unicorns and dragons, several hybrids, plus a few races I just completely made up. Like a strange donkey/lion looking thing with six legs, horns on it's ass and three toed hooves.
The world had it's own set of rules as to how magic worked and what could be done, things like human and demon magic can't mix, mainly because togeather they were too unstable and the spell you attempted to cast would end up being magnified and/or something would go wrong. For instance, if you attempted to cast shrinking spell on someone without the intention of killing them, there skin might shrink but the rest of them would not causing death. This is why human/demon hybrid rarely lived past the age of 15 (which is the age that magic can be proformed, of course it's not legal until age 20.)
>.> I'll stop boring you with this now.
I mainly created them to go against people the MSC who played over powered characters....but they evolved since then.
Lynxhunter
I just have my charas who live in some "Underworld" and all are looking different <<;
some are looking like humans (are in real demons)
the most one are mostly kemonomimi like like wolfes, cats, dragons, reptiles in general ect....
it still exist an BG-Story for every lil chara I have created in this "Underworld"
from a girl who becomes the "Reaper",
a dragon that hides itsels as a human cuz of her to be killed,
to one that lives on the street and fights for there existence C:
I must REALY write down this shit or noone realy will hear something about it anymore <<;
PS. realy cool new icon Kami <3
In fact, I'm planning on making a full "demonology" of the demons of my current campaign. Put a good amount of time thinking up details for them (They aren't classic demons by far, but they're close enough to earn the name!), and it'd be kind of amusing to have a full reference-book for the demonology specialist in the campaign... :>
And after that, I might even work up a contrasting work detailing the "angelic" beings of the setting, which even less resemble classic angels than the demons resemble classic demons...
But I've always had a over-active imagination. Thinking up worlds and species and stories and all has always been something I've enjoyed.
Completely original, I swear
GIMME SUSHI NOW AND NOONE GETS HURT.
*goes to work on a 3d model of her*
I'm not very original.
My current story-arc project is set in a furry analog of the modern world, although I am taking the time and trouble to explore the fact that the characters are therianthropic, not just humans in funny costumes or walking animal clichés.
I have a few races I invented for a book I've been working on for the past 7 years. I now have approximately 9 races for this universe and the worlds they occupy and probably a hundred thousand years of history woven in between all of them. A few of 'em are stuck in my gallery if you'd like to have a look.
Tali Hartoh-Mason's got an interesting history. See, back when she was created, twenty years ago when furry fandom was mostly a 'sausage fest' (™ Rev. Ivan Stang), the big fantasy was "Hyooman Guy Meets Hawt Furry Chick And Has Consequence-Free Sexxors".
I decided to tweak a few tails.
When Tali was introduced on the "Galaxy Local 999" storyboard on The Electric Holt BBS in Philly circa March of '88, she was expecting twins, courtesy of my character, Major Matt Mason of the Temporal Corps-which came as a surprise to both Matt and his SO, Lowchan... and which makes Tali one of the earliest, if not THE earliest furry MILF out there. ;D
The three of them are now happily married and living in Arizona. Tali teaches at the Wilde Home for Wayward Catgirls, Matt runs a vintage Mercedes restoration shop and Lowchan's still with the Corps, commanding the TMS Musashi (which was the Space Cruiser Yamato's stunt double until the Corps bought her and restored her for active duty after all the movies and TV shows were over). Matt and Tali's twins, Franq and Jesi, are students at Xavier's School for Gifted Catboys and the Wilde Home, respectively...
Now how Tali developed a taste for the ladies...that, I'm not sure of. May date back to a historic 13 page piece written by me and drawn by Reed Waller (preview here which ran in TaliVisions #4 in 1996, wherein Tali and Low discover the joys of each other...
Incidentally, Tali's initial design was inspired by Erma Felna; however, when I saw Kitten Kaboodle on 'Tale Spin' in '91, I thought, "Hey! She'd look great as a brunette!"...and the rest is history.
Most of the rest of my characters can be seen in the Spontooniverse,, to wit:
-Leslie duCleds, scion of the duCleds Chemicals fortune in Delahare and would-be adventurer. Son of Paul duCleds (whose name came up from a slip of the tongue while I was saying "Paul is dead clues"). Currently engaged to Inocenta deCiervos.
-Willow Fawnsworthy, erstwhile secretary, actually a Minkerton's operative tasked with keeping an eye on Les. She's a lady with a secret past, most of which is revealed on the Spontoon site. Name inspired by Myra Foxworthy; bod inspired by Bammby Slander of the "Sophistikats" comic book. Engaged to Reggie Buckhorn.
-Rosie Baumgartner, former bartender at the Double Lotus (a ladies-only bar on Casino Island), now proprietress of Luchow's on Meeting Island. She showed up simply as Rosie the bartender in order to make a rather horrid pun in "Say It To Flowers", but has evolved into a first-rate character on her own. Her surname can be explained by Googling the terms "Greaseman" and "Six Minute Workout" and listening to one or two of the segments found thereby. Currently romantically involved with Inspector Stagg.
Whew! Quite an essay, this. Think I'll repost it on my journal... ;)
Engaged to Reggie Buckhorn.
That should do it. :)
Durned superfluous slashes...
hrm..basally she's a canine/feline/sloth/lizard hybrid that I have yet to find a name for, though she's been around since 2000. :o SHE has a name, but not her breed. XD
And yes, they're usually have something that makes them more powerful than the other races, be it strong magic, high tech, or both. They usually also end up with such bizarre personalities that the potential god-race is effectively Flanderized into feathered versions of Robin-Williams-in-a-jar. (Semiphenominal, nearly-cosmic powers anyone? great for a sight gag, makes sure we won't get outright killed by the baddies, but why do we end up in our big, baggy polka-dot boxers all the time? And how to we wear those UNDER our feathers, which are attached to our skin?)
Kut'lari, spartians (so called because their names are unpronounceable), uulahyx, athercas and leifkanians (similar enough because I based them on the same premise), qu'hehn, hyxozians, eikas...The list goes on probably.
Moreover, paws are the perferred topic, yet my tastes has centered on lesser dragons (Drakes). while no name is figured, hopefully a visual encyclopedia can be fleshed out for there's so many types. Aquatic one derived by the nautilus & fluid dynamics, one with a 528Mph running speed (I'm lost on that one), and this dead one - the first venture into personal drakes - getting its look from petrified lightning, broken or dead trees, and driftwood. A good portion have a back info while others are artful mimics of geology, engineering, or metalsmithing story buff. Especially the weapon inspired ones, must post the spear versions.
So yeah, races, except for my Caiths ( which is just subtle changes in the whole cat kingdom ) are rare for me; the how-would-this-like-if-it-was-real itch and so on come around every so often.
I have some stuff on my page, towards the back, including a brief description and a sample of translated text from their holy book.
My most recent one is the Avuuns. They're quite interesting! Have yourself a looksee if you want.
http://www.furaffinity.net/view/1512884/
The two submissions of mine posted before that one tell alot more about the race, but that's my best visual piccy of em. They're just an RP/Random Drawing race as of now, however, but I likes em. =3
And of course I've worked out a lot of stuff for the rest of the world, general history, factions, technology, basic rules for language, etc. I've been thinking of writing some of it up in quasi-intelligible form and posting it here.
but it's definitely something to think about on my part, a whole new aspect if you will.
As a gamer, I have something like 800 pages of handwritten info, 300 of which are geared towards detailed racial information, everything from cultural overviews and detailings, social patterns, histories, physiologies, technology overviews, military layout and structure, etc. That's for one single universe. I've got some other stuff on the back burner covering another ten or twelve races for another universe, and more for that one coming as I go, since the game that one goes to is themed towards exploration.
The tech end of the spectrum includes just about every possible aspect in there, and includes vehicles, military gear, etc. Essentially, enough that I could write detailed Janes reports on most of the equipment involved, and Guns & Ammo style write-ups on their weapons.
Despite having this perhaps nigh-overwhelming wealth of races to draw upon, I find myself drawn to the products of other peoples' imagination, both for the look of the various races (your Chetorians almost chief amongst those) and for the data and information others come up with. I don't know if this simply makes me crazy, unfocused, hyperactive, a candidate for short attention span theater, or what. ^_^
Celtoria & the Celtorics - Anthromorphic bat-like people who make up the populace of eastern Bosrainia. They are skilled farmers and herbalists and are especially loving towards their kin, and totally hateful and sadistic towards their enemies or anyone else threatening their people or culture. Their military consists primarily of females, who have their own division known as the Orichkna (or Orichkni, both working titles), who are recognized, feared and respected for their absolutely sadistic aggression and cruelty against the enemy (they are seen as wicked souls who bathe in royal blood and sleep with loyal rage) as well as their infinite fidelity and love for their nation and folk and their dedication to its well being. They wear a white devil and black metal crest, the white devil symbolizing their malefic nature on the battlefield and the black metal symbolizing their fearless and dedicated mindsets.
Riun & the Riunnic - A city and culture made up of anthros that resemble mice/otter hybrids and are a very technologically-advanced race (one of the few in Bosrainia to have cannons, etc.), but they have never let their technological achievements overshadow their indigenous respect and admiration for nature. Their military is among the largest of the tribes in Bosrainia.
Sometimes i wonder if I should stick to characters rather than races...
