Part 24
>D: Kill and loot
Deciding to forego any magic attacks, you charge in with your blade, fully prepared to fight as hard as you can. You feel gusts of wind blow by, carrying with them the intense heat from the fires, your fur standing on end from static discharge, and all kinds of other effects as more and more enemy spells are used- some aimed directly at you. The nearest Canid, a black-furred fox, you dodge his icy blast and charge. He effortlessly fires blast after blast of various types of magic, summoning everything from air to pure poison to push you back or cause mortal wounds. Within a few short seconds, you're forced to stop as these shots get nearer to your body with each step you take. You dodge every attack, but only barely. You can't get closer than this.
A battlecry sounds behind you as your party members jump at the Canid, who suddenly looks very surprised at so many coming at him at once. As he tries to aim his blasts at the approaching assailants, you and Phio both expertly close in and sink your blades into his torso, quickly ending his life. As his body hits the ground, you realize that this is only the first loss for the Canids. Others nearby seemed to realize this as well, as there was a sudden shift in the air. The Wenta defenders started to work harder and faster, while the Canids reacted and attacked more slowly. Morale is such a nice thing. Even as you took on another Canid, they were starting to go down more quickly. Dorza and Dorze ganged up on one that was using the curtains to harass a trapped Felinid, while Phio came at another at a low angle, catching him off guard and slicing his tendons before bearing down on the defenseless bastard's neck.
The tide of the fight rapidly turned, their stalemate suddenly turning into a 3-to-1 advantage. In a matter of minutes, the main hall was cleared out and littered with the bodies of Canids and Felinids alike. Once the battle was over, for the moment at least, you decided to look for any clues about why they were here. Despite feeling like it might have been a waste of time, you couldn't help yourself. If anything could be found, it would be worth it, so you took a look in the pouches of all the Canid's between you and the staircase.
(Respect with partymembers +5, for joining a major battle)
(2x Healing Potion: 20 HP restored; +5 Peemeter if used by Anamaki; Usable by any party member)
(1x Runic Stone: Small rock covered with runic symbols that you don't understand. Author says: Use if someone in your party goes unconscious.)
(1x Mysterious Gem)
Wait, this Canid had a glowing gemstone as well, and it glowed the same colors as your own. As you've been checking all of the nearby bodies, you know that not all of them had one. What were these gems, and what did they have to do with all of this? You stuff it into your loincloth-side pack, finding that it would only barely fit. There was no way you were going to be taking anything else along with you soon. With that in mind, you stopped checking the bodies and hurried up the stairs, hoping that you would find your parents still alive. Once you reached the top floor, most of the Felinids from down stairs- minus the ones that had been injured in the fight- following closely behind you. As you try to figure out where they might be, however, you can hear people speaking in one of the nearby rooms. You're about to go and check when you hear a sudden explosion in the distance, causing you and most of the other Felinids to look out a nearby window.
There was a cloud of smoke above the area of the village where the front gate would have been. You recognize it, having come from a specialized warning device that was created and deployed shortly after the first reports of Canid attacks in the deeper jungle. Rudimentary smoke bombs that guards tossed into the air after igniting, releasing a loud bang and a stream of smoke that "swirled" thanks to the way they were thrown. Once she spotted it, she turned to the others, whispering.
"Reinforcements, most likely. You guys should get back down there, I have to get my parents out of here. Phio, tigers, you're all with me."
The bigger bulk of Hunters turned and descended the stairs again, getting ready to defend the Council once again. You and your friends proceeded forward, listening in on the conversation. Eavesdropping on whatever was going on, you heard a very big and masculine speaking in an unknown tongue while a very familiar voice spoke over him, overlapping.
"We've gone over this a thousand times. Please be reasonable, hand over the thief before we are forced to burn her out. It is that simple."
"I'm not handing my daughter over to invaders!"
The second voice was far more familiar, the older sounding tone of your father. Hearing him almost made you charge in right then and there, and it wasn't helpful that your mother piped in as well.
"This is unacceptable. We've done nothing to you, why must you assault our village? Demand our children?"
After a moment of pure gibberish by both of the first two voices, there was a more understandable response. It seemed like the second voice, the one that you just can't seem to shake the conviction that you've heard it before, seemed to be doing some translation work.
"Make no mistake, we have no desire to assault anything. What we are doing is for the greater good. Now, the Huntress, or your lives."
Reaching the door, you make an unintentionally badass entrance by swinging it open and stepping directly into the room, getting everybody's attention.
"I'm right here."
As you said that, the semi-heroic smirk that was spreading across your face quickly faded away at what you were seeing. A massive, iron-clad wolf who looked like he had to duck to get under most doorways, and the green-cloaked Felinid, were both holding their weapons against your parents' necks. A giant and Green-Cloak. This would be pleasant. The Canid spoke, but none of what he said made sense, while the enemy Felinid spoke for him.
"Well... my friend here says... at last, we meet. The theif girl, taking what doesn't belong to her. Hand over the artifact, the gem you took, and we will leave without further incident."
