Part 25
(Hey guys, another landmark in the story: 25 parts complete! Now to deal with this stupid thing for another three quarters, then we hit a century! Hehe)
>Gained Trait B: Bladder Shrinking
>B: Give gems now, ask questions now.
To say that you were split between the urge to accept their offer and the urge to rip the giant Lupine's head open was a massive understatement. But right now, they held the trump card: your parents on the receiving ends of some deadly blades. It wasn't fun to decide what to do, but you gently pulled the pair of looted gemstones from your pouch and held them up for the two attackers to see, stepping forward with your arm stretched out- much to Phiodel's disdain. He was clearly about to try to stop you, but Dorza and Dorze mercifully held him back. You held your paw open long enough for the Canid and the green-cloaked Felinid to take one each, bringing their swords away from your parents' throats, and brought yourself out of your defensive stance once their weapons were sheathed. The Canid turned, brought an arm back, and punched a huge hole into the wall- through which he likely intended to escape- causing you and everyone in the room to shield their face from the flying bits of mud and stone.
(-Mysterious Gem x2)
You quickly realize that now is your chance to ask some questions, while there is still a short reprieve from all of the fighting. With your sword put away, you step forward and speak out to both of them with as loud and demanding a voice that you can muster.
"What is it you want from us? Why do you keep attacking the Wenta tribe!?"
The Green-Cloak glared at you with what you could only barely register as anger, with only his eyes being visible. He muttered something about you being ignorant before turning toward his Canid friend, repeating her question in their other language. He merely lowered his head for a moment before waving his paw upward, motioning for the smaller Feline to follow him. Your voice wasn't fast enough to come out in another protest as they both jumped from the fist-formed window, landing on a nearby shop and making their way back onto the main road. Driven to find answers, you tried to leap down after them- only to be knocked silly by a collision with the open air. Head throbbing and spinning like a top, you got back onto your wobbling feet and tried to figure out what happened. Using your probing fingers to check where the wall used to be, you felt a perfectly solid surface! It was an invisible barrier...
(Author's Note: I NEVER said that answers were guaranteed, only possible. And now you're down two gems.)
The tigers released Phio, who was scowling at the fact that the attackers had gotten away, but oddly, he didn't seem to be directing any of his anger at you. Odd, considering how it was your choice to give them the gems that allowed them to get away in the first place. Unable to direct his upset attitude at anyone, he just paced around and glared at the barrier, which was quickly softening under your fingers as they got further away. Disregarding everything else, you moved toward your mom and dad, who were getting more and more uncomfortable with their bindings. You take one of Phio's daggers, causing him to go berserk for about a second before going back to glaring at the outside, probably not realizing that the barrier would have weakened to the point of non-existance by now. You kneel down and cut their ropes, allowing them to move and stand again. Your mother quickly hugged you as tightly as she could, while your father gave a short thanks and began started ordering Dorza and Dorze around.
________________
Some time passed, the Canid forces having left the village, as promised. It seemed that all they wanted were the gems that you had collected. The villagers had started to come out of hiding, getting ready for the noon-time rush. All of the Hunters had been called back to the village, and all required returns were cancelled so that all of the Hunters would have enough free time to mourn the loss of a number of losses- both Military and Civillian- tonight at a funeral service that would be held in the Market plaza. Funerals normally took place at the Temple of Nanako Vosi, not far off the main street, but the numbers of dead were high enough for the first time ever to warrant the use of an entire open area. Meanwhile, you and Phio had been working together on a few minor repairs in the Council's main hall while Dorza and Dorze were busy with the village Main Gates, leaving quite a bit of distance between the two pairs, when he put his attention on you.
"Hey Ana... you did a good thing earlier."
You turned to him as you tried to mend a candleholder on one of the chandeliers. "Huh?"
"With the Canid and the cloaked idiot. I don't really like that we didn't fight them, but... I think you made the better choice. Protecting your family like that..."
His kind words caught you off-guard a bit, and for a moment, you didn't really know what to say.
"Th-thank you... but I'm sure you would have done the same, right?"
He shrugged, slightly indifferent. "Maybe. I guess I wouldn't really know. After all, I haven't really had a family to protect... Did you know I had to raise myself?"
That one really took you by surprise, and you found your undivided attention placed on him as he recounted the tale.
"My parents were lost in a Yaggan raid, back before the Hunters thinned out their population enough to make the village completely safe from them. I was still at home, but they were out in the market at the time, running a food cart. I must have been maybe five or six at the time, couldn't remember for shit except what happened before I found out. One of those Yaggan got inside the house, and it would have devoured me if one of the Huntresses hadn't tracked it's scent. All I remember, though is that I was saved from a Yaggan. I don't remember who it was other than that it was a female, and what came after."
You could hardly believe what you were hearing, that he had to go through something like that. Despite the candle near your paw dripping hot wax from it's imbalanced holder, you continued to listen intently.
"The Council didn't- and still doesn't- have any checks or systems in place that help children who lose their families, and since I couldn't get the food to live on or pay the Council, I was evicted. Needless to say, I was able to survive until adulthood, when I became a Hunter myself."
(+10 Respect with Phiodel)
He then went quiet again, seemingly done with his background story. You still weren't sure what to make of it, so you continued your work on the chandelier. It didn't take much longer for the both of you to finish, and you were both relieved from duty for the day. Speaking of relief... as soon as you stepped back into the marketplace, the buildup of liquids had been bothering you more and more as all that time passed, leading you to quickly look around for something to use as a bathroom. Any dark corner would do, but it was also possible to head home. However, despite your body's urgings, there were a few more things that you felt should be done as well, such as find out what these strange powers that the Canid's held were. The only places you could think of that might have answers were the Temple of Nanako Vosi and Mora's hut. The Temple held great spiritual knowlege, while Mora herself semmed to be a walking library. Or, if a fight was to be expected in the future, the Training Hall was always a good place to learn something new, no matter how skilled you were.
