Part 27
(Note: In this part I seem to be having difficulty figuring out what tense I'm writing in >_<)
>A: The "Strange Air" angle
You decide what you should ask about first, thinking that this topic may shed a little light on more than one question.
"What did you mean by 'strange air surrounds them?' It sounds like the air is supposed to be different when they're around, but I didn't notice anything like that when I was fighting them this morning..."
The elder Healer didn't look away from her work as she finished patching up one Hunter and moving on to another, now focused on patching up a small wound with some kind of salve.
"What I meant was their aura's, Ana. The air that surrounds us all. Their's is an air that channels the energies of the elements, giving them powers beyond ours. With these strange powers, they've harmed and weakened our strongest allies."
You are slightly startled by her words. She had very strongly implied that the magical attacks the Canid's had used against the Hunters earlier were exclusive to them- that the Felinids were simply incapable of using these powers. And yet... In a slight lapse of judgement, you hold a single finger up at your face and watch as you concentrate and force a spark to dance along the tip of your claw, not letting it grow into a full flame. Even Phio was surprised by how you generated fire during last-night's fight with the Yaggan pack. Was it possible that you were the only one with the ability to do this? Well, nevermind that, you still need more answers.
(Attention: -10%)
"What powers do you mean?"
"The power to control the elements. Summon rock and stone, conjure lightning, run with the flow of the wind. And the power to inflict others with curses, such as the one sapping our senses. Powers that our leaders surely want for themselves."
"Our leaders? What do you mean? Why would the Council want that?"
"The Council are not the only ones. We are all attracted to power, Anamaki. Especially the least powerful of us. It is a truth that can be found even in the darkest parts of our village. I've heard from one of my earlier patients that you had entered a rather unsavory pub yesterday, where you became an integral part of such a power-seeking plan..."
You still clearly remembered that little trip, though you weren't sure how those events could have fit into any "plan." Mora continued speaking before you could ask.
"Once you entered, two patrons in particular saw an opportunity to gain power over you, and use you to send a message to the Council, whom they strongly disliked for allowing them to sit as members of the lowliest group of citizens. So they attacked you and tried to make their claim 'official' by giving you their mark. And you know the rest. Unfortunately, the Council is not above such tactics."
"W-what do you mean? Has the Council done something?"
"I do not know, anything that the Council may have done in such poor taste has been kept such a deep secret that it hasn't been shared with me. And that in itself is interesting- things don't stay hidden from me for long. The village Healer is important to everybody, afterall."
She gave a slight chuckle before continuing with her work and her discussion with you.
"As much as I'd love to tell you, I can't tell something that I don't know. All I know is that their aura's have been tainted by the desire to build more power. Greed. And I fear they may be ready to sacrifice what power they have now to take it."
You didn't need to make her elaborate this time. You are already aware that the village is their power. This explained a lot, and you feel that you don't need any more answers. You thank Mora, who merely nods in acknowledgement and gets back to work on fixing people up, and quietly leave through the front door. Brushing the grass divider door out of your way, you turn back onto the street and decide where to go next. There was always the funeral to go to, but it wouldn't be for awhile yet- it was due to start at sundown, and the sun was still high in the sky. Realistically, there were many things that you could actually do! You could find your parents and tell them about your magic if you felt brave enough, try to find out why you had magic abilities, figure out what was in the Fyre Mead that you drank- seemingly giving you your fire spell, or you could find your party members.
So many choices...
