Reva's Workshop of Character Design for Beginners
12 years ago
So, if you're reading this, you already know who I am and no introductions are necessary. I've noticed a large proliferation of tutorials and otherwise put out there to help out fellow artists, and wanted to contribute to that collective as well. I've benefited from them, and so...karma, I guess.
But you kids ain't getting my style...also, get off my lawn. It's easy to grasp and understand, that a tutorial on how to draw Reva-like would be a waste. So rather then show you how to draw my googly eyes, I'd like to help in a different way. Over the next couple of weeks, I'll post a topic to draw on, an assignment if you will. It's for my benefit as much as anyone else, this is character design and I feel I could use a few more faces in my roster. Participants will be encouraged to draw two characters, for maximum practice pertaining to the topic. They can range in age from babies to adults, just so long as they fit the boundaries of the topic.
There'll be a week in between topics, and feel free to submit via replying to this journal your contributions. I'll reply as best I can with suggestions if you want them, otherwise, take this as a mental exercise in making your characters stand for themselves based on their appearance, rather then pages of back story.
Week 1. Wizards
Magicians, mages, warlocks, tricksters, and illusionists! Make two characters that showcase two very different types of magic. This can be represented in their clothing, their actions, glowing eyes, or the spell book on their belt. Poses aren't as important here in this trial run, so focus on making the character interesting. Even if she's just got on a t-shirt and diaper, make the first thing you notice about the character is 'oh hey, MAGIC.'
This is just for fun, there are no prizes or otherwise to give out, but it was an exercise I was about to undertake for myself and wouldn't mind some company along the journey. Take care and happy drawing! Due by next monday!

After that it's draw it all over again by tracing the lines I want in my tablet then color and shading and...aw, crap! Now I remember why I don't draw.
I'll post a link to the sketch when I get it scanned. You can at least see all my sketch lines...that's worth something.
*Hugs*
Thanks for the inspiration.
It needs some help with the paws and some of the proportions, the tail to back end transition doesn't feel quite right. I'm pretty sure it started as a fox then by some brainstorm I thought I'd step outside my box and try to modify the features to be a husky. Not sure I did the breed much service.
I can't say I abhor this sketch. Honestly it shows me that my skills are still about where they used to be...perhaps a little back slide.
Two characters, like you said. *grins*
Thanks for the $.02 and the inspiration to put pencil to paper.
Swifty
It's just the Black and White but I'll post a colored one when I can
