Part 29
>D: Take a backroad to the Alchemist.
Phiodel led you to the home of the inventor of Fyre Mead, taking some of the smaller back alleys along the way at your suggestion. It's surprising how little light made it between the thin pathways between the clay buildings, despite the sun still being high in the sky. It is dark enough in here to trigger your night vision, which made it much less of a problem than it could have been. Thankfully, there was nobody else out here- all of the crowds would have been out on the main streets. It gave a good opportunity to talk about a few things, so you decide to start a conversation.
"So, Phio, have you been facing any... issues?"
"Like what?"
You think for a moment on what you should bring up first. You had already formed an idea of what was going on, clearly remembering the pool of yellow liquid that the lion Hunter had made in his sleeping spot this morning. It would make sense if his injuries from yesterday had caused an "issue" with his body. You decide to finally push the subject on him.
"Like the mess you made this morning?"
You easily noticed his ears fold back against his head upon hearing that, despite the darkness of the alleyway. That was the only acknowledgement that he gave you, however, so you continue to speak.
"Dorza told me that you spilled something on yourself at the bar, but he didn't see any bottles near you. If you're having some kind of problem-"
"It's not a problem..."
His interruption takes you by surprise a bit, but you quickly recover and respond.
"What do you mean...?"
"I can handle it. As long as nothing is making me wait, I can still control it..."
As long as nothing is making him wait? Does he mean he can hold it for only a short time? It's a moot point, he should still go to Mora as soon as possible and see if she can fix it.
"If your injuries from a couple of days ago are doing this to you, you really need to go to the Healer and get all of that fixed."
"I keep telling you I'm fine, Ana. Look, I can still tell when I need to go, I just have... some difficulty in holding it. Thats it. It doesn't mean a thing when we're out in the jungle."
"Well, we're not out in the jungle right now, are we? Just.. let me know if you need any help getting some privacy or something."
He looked at you with a surprised expression. Obviously, he wasn't expecting you to have a helpful attitude about his problem.
(+5 Respect with Phiodel)
Soon, you both cross the alleys and end up back on the sandy streets, walking past clay and rock hovels until reaching one particular home that sported a series of odd devices, seemingly interlaced with the stone walls and windows. Tin containers and primitive wooden pipes ran along the structure in such a way that reminds you of a Yaggan's veined arm.
"This is definitely the right place. Now let's just hope I got the right alchemist."
Phiodel spoke to you before stepping through the doorway, with you following close behind, and calling out for any one who might be home. The inside proves to be just as filled with strange devices and pipes as the outside, and is illuminated by the glow of many fires and furnaces that served to keep a current of liquids flowing through the pipes and into different containers, which connected to even more pipes, containers and furnaces. These small-scale machines filled the room to the point that people would have to squeeze in between them to get around. It was all too complex for you, having never seen this intense process of rudimentary distillation. Thankfully, you didn't have to look at it all for too long, as a figure emerged from between a set of vertical piping in response to Phiodel's calling out. It was a female Cheetah Felinid, wearing a type of apron made of Yaggan leather (tough and somewhat scaly) that had been dyed yellow and had Wenta symbols on it to identify her profession. She was older than either Phiodel or yourself, likely coming close to Mora's age, but not quite.
"Hello, what can I do for you two?"
She spoke in a very calm manner, though you could tell from her tone and appearance that she was likely very tired. Or very busy, or both. With this in mind, you speak up very clearly and try to get things done as soon as possible.
"Hello, I just wanted to know what ingredients go into Fyre Mead. If you're the Alchemist who makes it."
"Oh, yes. That's me, I was just in the middle of making a bulk batch for some... Oh, nevermind. Come on, I'll give you one of my ingredients lists since you want to know."
She turned around, revealing that her apron was indeed an apron- and not an all-around dress. There was absolutely no backside to it, and much like all other tribe members in a culture where underwear did not exist, she had nothing to keep her rear end covered up. This was a strange thing to you, as most people had at least a strip of cloth to keep some things hidden, but this woman did not. Looking over, you could see that Phio clearly hadn't missed this fact either, as he stared after her as she disappeared between the piping again. You shook your head slightly before following, being led into a small segment of the room. She turned back to you and handed you a sheet of vellum with some plant names and accompanying drawings on it.
"These are the ingredients and what they look like. Don't worry about returning it, the Council keeps sending more of them to me. They're really starting to stink at this point, so I'm thinking of burying them. Anyway, I really should get back to work, so unless there's something else I can help you with...?"
(Fyre Mead Ingredients added to Inventory)
"Don't worry, we'll see ourselves out."
She merely nods before taking a nearby clay jug and carrying it through another set of pipes, causing Phio to again stare as she walked away.
"Come on, no need to stay any longer."
With that you pull him by the arm back outside. Once back in the sunlight, you take a look at the Ingredients. According to this, the ingredients are sugarcane- one of the most important parts to any alcoholic beverage in this village- some heavily distilled and watered down chili peppers to keep spiciness at a comfortable level, various spices and sugars, banana juice, and some kind of plant that you had never heard of before. Glowstalk. What the heck was this, and where were you supposed to find it? The picture provided showed a three-leafed plant, with a long stalk growing from the middle and producing a glowing bulb at the top. So not only had you never heard of it, you had also never seen it in your entire time as a Huntress.
Time to go information hunting. Though at this point you also wanted something to drink.
