It happens! I swear! Last time I took a 2-3 month break (wasnt my choice mind you) my art was awesome when I got back xD

Same happened to me as well.

This is kinda my explanation:
After spending so much time before drawing you trained your eye to look for colors and values and shapes, during the time off your brain subconsciously studies these in your day to day life as seeing how they interact with each other. You were probably also able to look at your own work during your time not drawing and probably spotted flaws in your work and thought up ways to fix them. Then When you return these little "hints and tweaks" are added into the drawing, as if you had always done it before, to make it look "right"

But thats just the way I rationalize it :P

I agree with blindcoyote and want to add a point

Normally you are ALWAYS improving, but just like losing or gaining weight it happens so gradually you might not notice it, since you were improving subconsciously in the way blindcoyote described but you weren't drawing constantly, instead of being gradual the change seems sudden compared to your old work. ^.^

Then this bodes particularly well for me whenever you make it down to my spot on the commission queue. :)

I've done that a long time ago when I wouldnt draw for a while, I would like get better coming back. Its like not drawing is better for you then drawing o.O
