To Aspiring Artists

I saw a journal that isil made about never giving up and giving advice to aspiring artists about how to improve, and I wanted to chime in on my own!
"My advice has no basis more reliable than my own meandering experience…I will dispense this advice now. "
If you've ever wanted to be good at something, it can be a daunting task from just starting out to meeting your potential. Even then, the journey is never really over because, as human beings, we are always reaching beyond what we thought was our best and soon our best becomes a stepping stone in the journey. Striving to better not only ourselves but skills we find enjoyable is part of the life experience and the road can be bumpy and turbulent and at times we may find ourselves wanting to give up.
Never give up.
No matter how hard things may seem, press onward. There's times when we feel like we're going no where or we'll never improve. Push onward. Progress is a cruel concept we tie ourselves to. At times we feel like we've made none, we may have made leaps and bounds, other times we feel like we have made great strides when we later realize we stepped backward. Don't let it rule you.
ALWAYS push forward and always continue to advance in what you love. Only do it for yourself; You'll end up finding yourself closer to quitting if you judge yourself by standards of others around you; You don't need approval from anyone else to do what makes you happy. "Remember compliments you receive, forget the insults. If you succeed in doing this, tell me how".
NEVER compare your work to other people's; There will always be someone out there better than you, and always people worse. "Don't waste your time on Jealousy. Sometimes you're ahead, sometimes you're behind...The race is long and in the end it's only with yourself".
If you find the drive to move forward, imagine the joy you'll find in looking back on your first works and realizing how far you really have come. No one is born amazing, we all achieve it through perseverance.
I give this advice because I have been in these places, I still am at times. I often find it hard to follow the advice I have dispensed above, but I promise you, the end result will be worth it. I've experienced it myself.

Both images were drawn back in Feb of 2002; Roughly 11 years ago. They're pretty darn awful, but I pushed forward and kept trying. Even if it was a single drawing a day, I kept moving forward. I found artists that inspired me, friends to advise me, and found an outlet for my feelings in art...I didn't care what people thought of me in the end and while I'm not an amazing artist, I can look back and say that I know I've come a long way, and I'm still not done growing up and developing my work.
I encourage all of you to keep trying at what you do, be it art, music, writing...never stop.

Kind of like in Ratatouille, where the chef says "Anyone can cook. Food will always come to those who love to cook." If you love doing something, and you persevere, you WILL become good at it. <3
And I'll keep trying because that's how I roll.
