Personally I think this is ""My little Pony Tales" AKA "MLP In Name Only" all over again.
I think, hey, they had the cash for a movie.
Why not a MLP movie?
Instead, they do -this-. Just to seel more toys. UGLY toys.
They could've invested on making more interesting toys, aimed at the collectos, and would be SWIMMING in cash!...
its a one time thing, easier to just ignore it than to go ape-sh*t over it. XD
But yeah, i'm not exactly keen on the idea behind the film either, but i suppose someone is otherwise they wouldn't have done it.
We need to show our appreciation to them for the series otherwise it'll be destroyed by it's very fans.

I see what you mean by strange... But well... When they inevitably run out of ideas, they tend to re-create it in a different image... But yes, definitely strange.
Also, I don't watch the show, but I thik Spike has an interest in one of the ponys....oh.
