Hmm, in that case you could look up about perspective.
Imagine a cube, and you have the ability to rotate it in a space. Now rotate it facing the same direction as the wheel, and draw an ellipse in that one face of the cube that matters. :P

I have a hard time drawing anything that isn't organic. Stuff with straight lines and perfect edges and such are really tough! That's why I like drawing characters and rarely do much with backgrounds. *giggles*

Photo references are okay, I do it all the time with my drawings. I can't draw to save my life without them

You just wanna make an original piece, that's okay. Using a photo reference would help you get the shape right which you can then develop on.

I'm quite terrible at inanimate objects as well and it only gets worse when I try to have a character interact with them *growls*

Of course, the impossible body proportions of a babyfur make bike-riding tricky too as illustrated in my "swapsies" pic...

*giggle* Cartoon characters usually 'cheat' when they're riding a bike - their legs grow and shrink as the pedals turn. ^.^

Sometimes using a ref can help one learn, tho I do understand wanting to
try to do it all on your own.

Copying certainly isn't cheating, it's what all art schools are forcing their students to do and it's what artists have always been doing over the years.

Awwww. I feel your paint Mr. Clever Squirrel. I usually have a difficult time myself with stuff like bikes and cars and such. Generally I'm better at characters than mechanical stuff. But still that said there's no shame in using a reference. I do it myself whenever I need it for that sort of thing. Heck it's especially true when I'm doing some aliens. For example I needed to look up some references for that diapered Batarian I did a lil while back.

Heehee, spaceships and things are more fun, because you can decide what they're supposed to look like! ^.^

Hehe True. Original scifi stuff comes well to me as I can just give stuff a flowing more curved design. But yeah when it comes to other stuff and even some aliens, Batarians are from Mass Effect, can be hard.

Photo references aren't cheating! They're what artists are sposta use! Now tracing over them, THAT would be cheating...

Hi Zee-Zee! You could always practice a few times using a photo reference, then use that practice to draw the final thing. Then you wouldn't really be drawing the bike from the photo reference.

If you can draw a bike sideways, maybe you can draw it on a piece of paper, then hold the piece of paper at an angle and draw the bike in perspective.

Sadly I have never drawn a bike, but from watching Brain Games I understand that they are hard for most everybody to draw without looking at one.

I really just wanted to draw 16, but thought the car was kinda necessary to the pic, and made it kinda funny at the same time.
Glad it turned out as well as it did. (Though it's been up nearly a year, and only 7 views, so maybe it's not all that good... IDK)

Why not? What's wrong with using a photo reference? Photo refs are wonderful ways to get practice towards being able to draw things TOMA (Top of Mind Acknowledgment)

When I learned how to draw Yoshies, I learned using pictures out of an issue of Nintendo Power and a Yoshi's Island Strategy Guide. I wish I still had some of my traces as they were what would ultimately become the initial templates for the Haposaurs.

On a fun note, when I draw hands, I tend to try and make the hand posture with my own hand to see what the "natural" way it would look would be like. Anyone who didn't know I was drawing would think I was a goof. Though, *giggles* I wouldn't be a ducky if I wasn't a little goofy. :)
