Hate to say it but I totally agree, which is why I've been spending a lot more time on Inkbunny these days. At least that site has a lot of fantastic interface ideas and is improving all the time. I hear Weasyl is doing a great job with improving itself constantly as well.

Any site that remains stagnant just because they're comfortable being number one is pretty pathetic in my book. They can make all the excuses they want, but in the end they're just hollow promises that are years too late. Not to mention the rest of the drama associated with this site and its staff...

It's one thing to get what you paid for. It's another thing to not keep promises. Granted that really doesn't say anything against the "you get what you paid for" logic, because they have no real obligation to keep promises as a result. It's still a damn shoddy and arrogant thing to do however.

The coders are lazy as fuck. Not much we can do about that.

Back in 2007/2008 we were promised a "UI overhaul", and even got teaser screenshots...5 years later it's "on the backburner". What do we get instead? Stupid shit like "hidden favorites", slightly larger thumbnails, and a system that prevents people from viewing your userpage.

The only reason this site hasn't died yet is because of how populated it is.

Don't forgett about that SFW/NSFW toggle button left to the logout button! That one was...pointless. Just set it up in the user's acc.management once and forget about it...Nope. Load the button script every time you access the page, so you have easy access - Accept I'll never use this toggle button! I cannot tell for sure, but I suspect it just eats up unnecessarily resources with every page-refresh...

Some of us use that toggle rather extensively and are grateful for it. :)

I use Opera browser for all-kinds of browsing (NSFW included) and only let Firefox to be used by guests. That way no net-history/favorites are exposed to the guests. And be sure, that I keep a very close eye on who uses my computer and for how long. I supervise any adventuring-off events!

So that button is useless to me. At least it could be askedif i want that option enabled by a want/not want checkbox. But oh well...not that of a big bother to me. I'm more interested on how many resources (bandwith) it uses with every loading. Every extra option can become a weak spot on how efficient a site is...
But I'll stop here. You have use for that button - I don't.

As best I can tell, it pretty much just turns off the rendering of certain items, so in essence it actually saves bandwidth if you leave it on all the time. :3

I see it as a possible filter button which is there, but I'll never use it = useless and not wanted by me. But then again, I'm in my 3X so i did not want to filter out any nsfw material. Don't limit me!

Yeah, custom thumbnails have been broken for over 8 months now and they still haven't fixed them.

I think it's just like... they have maybe -one- coder and they're really stubborn about letting new coders in, maybe? I bet some people around here are pretty decent coders who actually want to change FA/fix its problems, but they're just like "Nah, soandso will do it. Give it time."

Yeah, back when the commission info page was "bugged", numerous people offered valid fixes for it but FA refused and ended up just removing the page...come on.

Hopefully with these other furry sites popping up like Inkbunny and Weasl, perhaps FA will get its shit together and finally start fixing things and updating the site.

I wouldn't expect any big updates to this site anytime soon to be honest.... As much as we would all love to see it finally update and modernize, the FA staff have already shown that it's not really any kind of priority.

If I remember right the new UI that we were supposed to get was nearly done when the guy working on it quit for some reason. So in classic fashion it was scrapped and they're working on a new one from the ground up. So we may see it in the next... Oh I don't know, decade? Maybe?

Either way, I really wish they'd get around to updating the site and fixing all the bugs... Because a super simple commission page, SFW toggle, and a different header in all those years? Really guys?

*shrug* FA does everything I want it to do..If updating means looking more like the flashy memory-hogs Inkbunny or DeviantArt or pretty-much-most-websites-these-days, I'm glad they haven't. That said there's plenty of little things it could use that do indeed seem never to happen. :^

FA is pretty unoptimized tbh. Load times spiking for no apparant reason and omg last year(can't remember when but the site was just unusable due to 6sec+ load times.

Okay, aside from your bashing of old, unchanged systems, Don't you think there is still sone merit to this site? I mean I've only joined in the last year, so I wouldn't know all the struggle your complaining about right now, but still, is there nothing that excites you about this place? Cause you make it sound like it's the worst thing in the world.

I mostly just draw ponies now and I'm not sure what sort of goals I even have in mind for this place. I once had a yiff comic in progress but it was abandoned due to the fact that it involved a character of an abusive ex of mine. I'm mostly here to post what I have, but doing commissions, joining the community, expecting a nicer format.. aint gonna happen it seems.
Their size limit is ridiculous for example. These days images tend to be much larger and they reduce them to such terrible quality that it's just hardly worth bothering posting any large, high quality works.

FA's code isn't open. But I imagine if it were, we'd see how much of a mess it is. FurAffinity is built on PHP that's been nearly unchanged for a decade now. It does not scale, it does not tolerate failure well. It is very easy to create exploitable code.

From conversation logs previously published, the main coder is not good about letting other people in on the code. Probably because he does not trust others to work on it. Probably also because it's such a mess that it's easy to change one thing in the codebase which should not at all be related to another place, and have that other place break.

FA will not recover. It will need a rewrite in a modern language or it will be displaced by the likes of Weasyl eventually.

VCL was displaced, and this place can be, too.

Ok...so you're bitching about a free service that you probably use a LOT. Seriously, if you don't like it, leave. I've got no relation to any of the admins on this site but seriously...you really don't have any right to bitch about something that is, for all intents and purposes, free.

It's the fact that the people running it have been making promises that they keep breaking. Free or not, it's not okay to break a promise, especially when you make that promise to thousands of people. There are plenty of other free sites out there who know how to be responsible for their users. Furaffinity has the largest collective of Furries on the net, and as such, it's a big responsibility.
I don't think it's okay to tell someone to LEAVE if they don't like something. It doesn't work that way.
That's like saying: "Oh well, this park is covered in trash and pollution, so what, it's free public property quit complaining, if you don't like it, don't go to the park." when in fact the correct answer is "If you love the park, then you have every right to be upset that it's a trash heap and someone should take responsibility and clean it up."

Just because something is free doesn't automatically excuse it to be shitty. I can't pass out free samples of rotting food to people and say it's okay because it's free.

If this was a tiny little crap website then sure, I wouldn't care. But there are so many other free websites out there who have responsible aministrators who strive to keep up with changes and keep their userbase happy, they keep promises, they support their community, they do whatever they can to improve and keep their site a place people will want to stay.
Instead, we have multiple furry sites trying to keep up to date and make a better format than FA because the admins simply wont put any care and love in to an outdated website with thousands of people who are wanting some changes and being lied to over and over and over again.

If they just said "We're keeping it this way, so deal with it" then fine. People have no right to complain. But when they have said year after year after year that they will do something, only to repeatedly not do it?
That's not okay. At all.
And that's why I'm complaining.

A fair assessment. I choose to not get worked up about it. If the people are in charge of something are indeed unreliable I generally pass. I don't have time for unreliability. But in this case I'm like meh cuz at the end of the day this is a porn site...so I take it as it is.

Honestly I made this journal because I've been pretty much gone or not paying attention to this site for almost a year now, and coming back to see it still hasn't changed one bit is not surprising, but still disappointing. It's because I like this site that I wish they'd actually give a crap about fixing all the stuff wrong with it, like broken thumbnails, size limitations, and terrible emoticons. Especially when the reason half the time they don't update is because they refuse help from anyone outside their friend circle even though people would be more than happy to help. All it would take is one day of saying "Draw us new site emotes!" and they will have literally hundreds of people throwing good quality emoticons at them that can easily be updated. No problem at all.
But they wont.
Because they are that lazy
And the admins themselves constantly complain about the emoticons and call them awful and say "We'll update them!" and they never do

It took them 4 years to fix the commission page. FOUR YEARS.

It took them months to fix the search function which was a vital part of the site

a lot of people are here not because they love the ease and quality of the site, but because it's where the most people are.
