not true. my friend has a blog for her nsfw work and she flagged it as such before this started, but then tumblr decided that it was not just nsfw and flagged it as adult. her work won't be seen in tags now.

That's not the same as them being banned.

If you can't find/search/see it, it's basically a banned AKA "removed" from the site. It's like they're brushing everything under the rug so to speak. o.o

If you already watch the person, you can still access it. Therefore it's not banned. Learn the difference between HIDDEN and BANNED.

Hmmm. Actually, I've done a bit of digging on this, and from what I can gather there's some fundamental misunderstandings going on.

First of all, the key words in that NSFW document are "Safe Mode." Specifically, NSFW and Adult tagged posts will not show up for followers and other users while browsing in Safe Mode. But in what one might call "Unsafe Mode" (IE, the default browsing for Tumblr, especially before these changes), those posts would still show up. Additionally, some of these changes are designed to minimize the amount of NSFW or adult material that appears when searching for Tumblr stuff via outside search engines.

I think part of the confusion on this stems from the blog of Slugbox, where people thought that Slugbox was being censored due to the NSFW and adult material of his blogs. What I found a bit interesting is that they tried to search for Slugbox's blog names like they were tags - they found the blogs, but no posts. However, this is because, as far as I'm aware, Slugbox doesn't actually use his blog name as a tag in his posts - ergo, no posts would show up when searching for said tags because said tags have never actually been used. (Hmmm, that sounds a bit tautological...)

That being said, I think some caution is in order, and perhaps a bit of thought - perhaps a calm and intelligent letter (or letters) to Tumblr staff asking them if these fears or rumors have any basis in truth. And even if they are false, best to keep a weather eye out - just because this may turn out to be false doesn't mean that future ones will be also.

The "safe mode" isn't actually the case. NSFW posts and flagged tumblrs are just no longer showing up in the search. Simple as that.

Funny, I just did a tumblr search for #NSFW and got a bunch of porn.

You're correct: the NSFW tag itself is full of some smut.

Now go to the Krystal, Gardevoir, and Renamon tags and ask yourself "why is there so little porn here?" You will see some porn, but practically nothing, compared to what you might previously have found.

From what i'm reading they're not banning the blogs, they're just gonna flag your blog if you haven't set it up for not safe for work. From what it says you're still gonna have your stuff there and I can still search for Non-Safe for work stuff perfectly fine on my end.

So in other words, they're not BANNING you. They're BANISHING you. Basically, making it so nobody can ever find you, thus restricting your audience to the people you already have... and NOBODY ELSE.

I'm not sure if I'm banished or not because I'm finding adult post I've made and other people perfectly fine on Tumblr. Maybe its because post a mixture of adult and normal post. *shrugs* but my blog has been set up as not safe for work since I made it.

Ummm....no not at all. In fact these rules say nothing about removing adult posts from tags, only that they will not show up under safe mode. Can you show an example of a post that is filtered in such a way?

They're not banned, they're just taking things off of easily viewable areas so porn blogs don't show up in searches and in general tags. That is NOT banning. :|

So this is what I was hearing about before - It sucks for people who are gaining audience, but thankfully I mmmmight be safe from it? Cause I made a smut art blog its own thing, and chose to not have my posts come up in searches, cause I prefer it to be something people know about through me sharing the link, like here on FA.

That said, it's kind of bullshit, and I feel like if they're so concerned about protecting people from this kind of stuff then they should just, I dunno, provide the optional "This post is NSFW" button when you choose to post something. It creates an issue, in that so so many previous posts will need to be labeled as such, but it'd make a whole lot more sense.

Hasn't using Yahoo's services become just about as irrelevant as "AoL" these days? I mean seriously, once Yahoo acquired tumblr wasn't that enough of a red flag for people to find another service? Yahoo turning everything they touch to shit isn't exactly a new thing. . . they've sucked for a long time and I'm amazed they're still around, much less relevant.

Uh, guys? That was how NSFW blogs on Tumblr were SUPPOSED to work in the FIRST PLACE. The NSFW flag was broken. Yahoo is just fixing it.

I do wish they would let people change flags from NSFW to the new Adult flag, though.

I've also heard rumors they will add a NSFW search mode- sorta like how in Yahoo and Google search, you can opt to allow questionable/adult search results in your searches if you want.

Oh, and your journal is inaccurate. It says they're removing stuff from tag searches of any sort.

The link you give us says otherwise. It specifies "Safe Mode", which implies my earlier reply to myself is correct and browsing outside of safemode will still turn up NSFW stuff.

Every single time a smaller company gets bought out by a huge company like yahoo the service of that company goes to shit.

Holy damn, same thing happened to iMeem when MySpace bought them, turned into crap and all the music I had faved (including some really rare recordings) were gone! We were told we could get them back eventually, but the service ended and I never even got an email about it.

So what's the problem?

Okay so where does it say NSFW/Adult blogs are being banned? The only things NSFW blogs have been removed for in the past was for the suspicion of spam and for posting pornographic material of minors or characters that were child-like in appearance.

All I know from this is that tumblr has flagged blogs as NSFW or Adult, which is kinda weird because you can label your blog as either-or on your own accord. If you've been flagged, your blog will not show up in search engines, and people who are not logged in to tumblr will not be able to view your content. Tumblr just totally defeated the purpose of Safe Mode though, which is even more weird.

I don't see what you're getting at. Looking at it, they're just doing something that legally they HAVE to do to protect minors and anyone under age. Adult and NSFW posts aren't being banned from searches entirely, just from people searching while not logged in or while on Safe Mode/On their Phone. Underage exposure to porn, even accidental, is a federal offense, and I honestly have no idea how Tumblr got away with not having this stuff sided away this long. It's not a super ban hammer of ultimate pain and destruction meant to ruin the lives of anyone with an adult blog on Tumblr, as that would deny more then half of the Tumblr blogs outright. What they are doing is making it so a 16 year old looking at his Mom's blog can't go searching for "Mom's cat" and get a ton of older women's vaginas, unless he's logged into a Tumblr account with the proper access. And if he's logged in and his mom posts a picture of her tits, and her blog goes NSFW as a result, as long as he's a follower of her blog, he can still see it, even if he's on Safe Mode, because they are trusting that he's seen that already and knows what he's getting into.

At least that's how it looks to me. You're a great guy, and it seems weird when you get upset about things. Just doesn't fit the Beau I know.
