I have some complaints about Metal Gear Rising: revengencese
12 years ago
Revengenceseseseseses....that's not a word first of all,
but I let that slide because I think it's funny.
now,
first of all, I started the game following the tutorial,
and one of the first thing they explain is running and attacking
at the same time,
30 minutes into the game I'm running down the side of a building
like Sonic while being attacked by missiles, I died several times...
why?... Because I followed the directions at the beginning of the
game, I attacked while running.....WRONG!.....your sword
is disabled during this scene and it's all about dodging and
no explanation as to why.
next problem is,
no Blocking/Dodging/Counterattack....no,
I have to fight the camera more then I do the enemies.
it's run away and run back to lower health, and if your lucky
enough, hold L1 and do some specials, not that it matters
because the game pics and chooses when these moments
are effective.
this problem that I have is not just with this game
but a problem with a lot of modern day Japanese games,
way too much explanation on simple instructions that only
require common sense, yet instructions that are required
for moments that don't make a lot of sense....No Explanation
at ALL....
also,
I died over 25 times within an hour of playing this game,
I can't tell if it's that the game is this hard or if the controls
or that bad or that I just have to know specific things that
aren't told for some reason.
I made it all the way to the robot Dog and I couldn't land a blow
on him.....well....I could land a few but not enough to matter,
it takes double the time to throw a grenade then it takes for
the dog to attack.
so....No Grenades and No Dodging, and all sorts of frustration.
here is the thing with good combat games,
sleeping dogs, the NEW Tomb Raider, Batman Arkham....whatever.
they have dodge and counterattacks that allow a person to
"Dance" with these games, and with MGR.....just button mashing
and hope you don't die.
as for the story, I really like it.
I know it's stupid and silly, but that's what makes it kinda
fun, I had already accepted that before playing it, the other
Metal Gears are what the good Drama story is for, and even
those games have really silly moments in them and I'm
okay with that.
but,
it's just the game mechanics that are so horrible with this game.
last bit and I'll leave this game to rot,
when the screen brings up with a tutorial asking you to push
the left and right buttons on the D pad (and this is where it
gets a little complicated) they show an image of the cross
hatch illustrating the D-pad, and the buttons that are lit up
brightly are the Up and Down buttons.....but these aren't
the buttons required to push....the buttons that are dark and
dim are the buttons they are asking you to push.......WHAT!?...
I know this might be nit picking, but this caused me some serious
trouble with the game, it felt like the game deliberately lied to me
by specifically instructing me the opposite buttons to push of the
ones that were required.........BAD GAME MECHANICS, and
BAD Tutorials for giving graphic details on the simple stuff but skimping
on instructions that are necessary.
anywho,
don't mind the plot, but I can't play this game,
it just frustrates and angers me.....
I played for an hour and died over 25 times.......
no....I'm sure I suck, but at least I should have learned
how to play the game even a little bit.

how to play the game even a little bit.
Like how some games have the ok and cancel in their original settings instead of swapped (being X and O)
never played it.
Was a week of hell, that.
I have to admit though, the ridiculous ending makes it worth it all in the end.
The fight with the dog pretty much just tells you if you know how to parry or not. If you don't, it's the time to practice and learn. His attacks are pretty telegraphed and easy to pick out. Most times you're able to parry you can see an orange flash before you need to, as a kind of prompt. The game doesn't exactly encourage button mashing but you can get through it doing that, it's certainly a lot harder than it would be otherwise, of course.
A few more things grenades don't take long to throw, you just have to tap the button instead of aiming. And the game never really told you that you needed to attack while running, it just informed you that you could do so while doing the Ninja Run.
Ultimately, I feel like you missed a few of the things the game told you and didn't explore the mechanics yourself outside of the tutorial. But if you didn't enjoy your time with the game, that's a shame, I suppose. As far as I'm concerned, it's a really good game that controls well. (With the exception of the camera, though you can lock on)
as I stated, It's probably that I simply suck,
but I've really tried at this game,
I was giving as much patience as I could, I just didn't get it,
but if I have to start all the way from the beginning of the game
just to reiterate an instruction that I misunderstood then what fun
is that... I tried looking up a way to re-do some of the instructions
to help explain kill that dog more efficiently, but all I got were a list
of combo moves.
it just felt like a fighting game after awhile,
the only way i was able to achieve my moment up to this point
was by taking a page out of the other Metal Gear games
and sneak and kill every character in the area, I found this to be
more fun then the battle system.
but I love the other metal gear games, and that's probably why this game
is so hard on me.
I'll try again,
but no promises,
just sucks that I have to start from the beginning
just so I can better understand what I'm doing wrong.
took me (not exaggerating) 15 tries,
and I finally beat that dog.
I am absolutely done with this game.
I have ran through the tutorials again,
I do not get what I did right or wrong.
the game just started refilling my health non-stop
as if it started feeling sorry for me for losing so much.
I don't like this game.
I am done.
Once you get it down though, its AWESOME.
And a sidenote, I actually like that they left out an easy to use "Block" function. It makes it way too easy. Learning how to time your Parry properly is part of the learning curve, and once you do, your good.
And I think PherociousEso has a point. I don't think you fully experimented with the controls enough, and you need to try to have a little more patience!!!
Worst comes to worst, you can turn on Auto Parry until you get everything else down, and then turn it off.
I AM DONE.
no offense if you like this game,
but this thing for me is a horrible experience.
I hate this thing.

I'd still prefer the option of a button because you still have to time it right and angle it right. but mapping it to
the same button as attack can make things confusing.
either way I"m never picking this game up again.
no matter how a "block" button is dressed up,
or what cluttered rules this game has tried to define
with me....I Just don't care and I'm never playing it again.
but thanks for your input.
-There IS dodging/sidestepping/blocking/counterattacking, you buy the moves from the upgrade shop along with all the other moves
-There ARE grenades, lots of them. Smoke grenades, phosphorous grenades, plain ol frag grenades, the usual affair. They're scattered around levels and in boxes and such.
I tried this game again,
I don't like it.
I really took the time to give this game my interest too,
I don't like it.
But hey, you don't like it, that's fine. I love it.
So long as you don't tell me I can't like it, I won't tell you that you need to like it :3
then I think everything is gonna be alright.
lol.
