Eternal Darkness Sequel: Shadow of the Eternals Kickstater!!
I figured I would go ahead and make a journal post on this since it looks like I won't be able to do the livestream event that I was hoping to do. But maybe this will work too!
For those who don't know, Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem is a Lovecraftian-style survival horror game on the gamecube. It's a very highly rated game and, for those who know about it, revered as one of the best games on the gamecube.
The game spans thousands of years and multiple characters in their battle against the Ancients and the encroaching Darkness. It utilizes an array of Mackical spells and ancient weapons as well as a sanity meter. The more monsters you encounter, the lower your sanity drops affecting not only your character, but the player as well.
The game itself is amazing and by far one of my favorite games of all time. It's definitely a must have for any fan of Lovecraftian writing and/or survival horror games.
Back a couple years ago it was announced that a highly anticipated sequel was to be in the making. But sadly Silicon Knights ran into some legal trouble and the sequel was canceled.
But luckily, Precursor Games, along with Denis Dyak, are trying to get the funding needed to make Shadow of the Eternals. The spiritual successor to Eternal Darkness.
They have a kickstarter going on right now to help raise the funds to make this game. If their goal is reached, the game will be released on PC and WiiU. If their reach their stretch goals, they'll be able to develop it for other consoles as well!
I really, REALLY want to see this get the funding it needs. I always used to say that if there were ANY games I'd need before I die it would be an HD Majora's Mask remake and a sequel to Eternal Darkness. And now that sequel has a chance of becoming a reality!

So please, if you're interested in seeing this game made then please consider pledging to the kickstarter! I've already pledged all that I can at the moment so I'm hoping that by spreading the word on this, I can help it reach it's goal, if only by another $10 or so.
And for anyone who has never seen/played Eternal Darkness, go do so! There's a few let's plays on youtube you can watch if you can't find the game itself! I encourage you to check that game out to get a feel for what Shadow of the Eternals is going to be like.
And did I mention that one of the characters that's going to be in the game is Erzsébet Báthory? The woman who killed hundreds of young women and bathed in their blood to achieve eternal youth? How cool is that, come on... You know you want to see what they do with her character!
So send a few bucks their way, if you can. Spread the word for other Eternal Darkness fans so that they know what may be in store!
I'll keep looking for the game.
I've just started reading Lovecrat as well! (Always been a Poe fan.) I just picked up The Lurker at the Threshold a couple weeks ago. His writing style is amazing~
I watch a lot of let's plays, including Achievement Hunters.
But I'm being positive about this whole thing because I've been waiting for this for years.
First of all, here we have the leftover team from Silicon Knights, who, besides Eternal Darkness and some work on the MGS port for the gamecube, have never done any real good videogame work. Its kind of leading against them.
Secondly, and thats the most important part. People are getting truthfully weary of Kickstarter projects, especially those of games. So far, pretty much all games that were backed are either still very very far from being finished, despite their self appointed deadline approaching, or, like in Shadowrun Returns case did come out, but the developers did display lot of mismanagement (like features missing from the game because of "lack of funds" despite having made more than they said they would need) and the finished game is a real mixed bag, with good stuff there but lots of unused potential or outright bad programming. And then theres Tim Schäfers case, who said he wanted to do an adventure game in the likes of old Lucasarts stuff, and would need 500.000 dollars for it. He got 4.000.000.
And now he said he can't do it because he doesnt have enough money.
So far, only game that seems to be still on course is Wasteland 2, but thats way off. And Armikrog does seem to have nice concepts behind it, and a dedicated team, but so are all the other games mentioned above.
So yeah...I can see why nobody wants to jump on the "Give me money and I make games like we used to make" train anymore. Because it aint working out right so far. And when teams of actually really good developers and designers, who never really made a bad game can't get their shit together...why are we supposed to trust Silicon Knights who had SUCH bad mismanagement behind them?
And personally, I don't think it's very fair to base judgement on Precursor Games because other kickstaters haven't delivered. That's just an inherent risk you take when you invest in a project. The same risk would apply to ANY kickstater or similar project. Investing money into something does not guarantee the outcome you were hoping for. But then, I'd rather spend $25 dollars to help make a game that I've been waiting a decade for rather than just nay-say because of the possible risk that it may not happen. If everyone did that then I don't think a good portion of the games that exist, or any franchise for that matter, would exist.
I don't really know where this is coming from anyway. Not once did I say anywhere that they were struggling to get their funding. Hell, they made about $120k in the first day. And about $30k today.
All I said was that if you were a fan of ED, you should consider tossing a few bucks their way if you can/want. That's all.
As for trust, once again, investing in ANYTHING is a risk. I don't know anything about those failed kickstartes that you're referring to, but unless you're in the company, then you don't really know why their projects have failed/been delayed, other than whatever tidbits of info they've released to the public. And it's unfair to distrust a company simply because a similar company failed to deliver.
Yes, Silicon Knights fucked up. I'll agree there. But Silicon Knights isn't making this game. Precursor Games is. And although it does have some old SK team members in it, it's still a new game company trying to get it's foot in the door and I'm willing to take the risk to help fund this game and spread the word to other ED fans who have been waiting for their promised sequel.
Because from what I gathered, this is their second attempt. They already had a kickstarter going but because that got nowhere they cancelled it and started another. The huge influx you see now are the same people that had paid money into their first failed attempt. When all of these people are finished redonating, the influx is probably gonna wane. I donated too, you know.
As to make something clear, I AM a fan of ED and MGS: The twin snakes. Those were some of my favorite games back then. Heck, I will still hold up ED as one of the best horror games out there, despite the huge amount of (often very credible) people saying its a thing of fanboyism that this game is as popular as it is. But that makes it even harder for me to put trust into this. Its a spiritual sequel, yes, but still somewhat of a sequel. And Sequels most oftenly never turn out nearly as good as the games they come from.
So yeah, I'm not saying not donate for this, after all, its a small amount of money. But I am saying that this should be taken very weary and careful, and with a pinch of salt, because so far, the kickstarter games have turned out rather mediocre at best.
All I'm saying is that innate negativity gets people nowhere. And I would have really appreciated it if you had just kept this negativity to yourself. I was just making a journal to bring a project that I'm excited for to people's attention. I was not asking for opinions on kickstarters or sequels.
