Read this the other day. It took me a few moments before it really set in what was underway. The UN Human Rights Office - that is to say an office in an organization comprised of key individuals from hundreds of countries - is launching a worldwide campaign to equalize the LGBT and Hetero communities.
This is a big step. Between Russia's stepping up their game against the LGBT community and incredibly stupid stuff like this and this, on the international level it almost seems like the world is fighting back against us, the LGBT community. As always, we are prepared to stand for who we are, but having a little help from the world is certainly a boon. I can't imagine living in a country where it is a crime to be gay. And, with any luck, the future won't have to think about that. The steps that we make as a world today will help to equalize the world of tomorrow. We now officially have the most influential human rights office in the world on our side; imagine what we can do with the rest of the world!
This is not an excuse for people to start walking down the streets of Moscow, Dubai, or even somewhere like Toronto snogging each other and flaming all the phobes. What unites us as a community isn't our capacity for lust and rubbing salt in the wounds of the uneducated, it's our capacity for love. The colours of our love are our paints, the world is our canvas, and we are the artists.
