Need Help (Not asking for money), originals stolen
12 years ago
Long story short (Extended story below), I attended a furry convention in Indianapolis, IndyFurCon to be specific, this past weekend (Aug 9th-11th), and today (Sunday, Aug 11th), a blue accordion folder with all of my originals was stolen.
I really need help spreading word about this, and would ask that folks keep an eye out for any and ALL of my works being sold outside of my FA, Weasel, or DeviantArt accounts (these are the ONLY accounts I actively sell on). Please repost this journal, and let folks know to keep an open eye out for my work, send me a message if you find ANYTHING odd.
I highly doubt I'll ever see this folder again, but I'll take any chance I can get, this stuff is priceless to me.
--Extended Story--
I originally did not intend to post anything about my visit to IFC, I'm not a furry, and haven't delved much into the fandom, mostly I draw werewolves and horror artwork, and I dabble in anthro. It was suggested to me several times that I attend a convention, that I'd likely sell many commissions (which I did).
Before I continue, I want everyone to know that I had a great time at the convention, most folks were very polite and I enjoyed the company of many, I don't blame the furry fandom nor the con for the occurrences below, I just blame the one person who chose to get works of my the cheap and filthy way.
On Sunday at 3:30pm, after the artist alley closed down, I placed my supplies and my originals (which I had brought to show as an example of the progress in my work) back into my car. I returned to the convention to eat, and work on the commission list I had amounted. I remained in the hotel for the next 3.5 hours, until I needed to grab something from the car, where I found a broken car window and all of my originals and my supplies stolen by a con-goer.
I assume that this was someone who either commissioned me, thought of commissioning me, or simply attended the con and saw my work by chance. There were many other valuables in my car that were left untouched, the window was broken specifically for these two bags.
I worked things out with the hotel, and the Indianapolis police, filed reports, cleaned up the mess, etc. There's not much the city nor the hotel, nor the con staff can do, as this is NOT their fault, nor their responsibility. I don't blame any of these folks for the incident, it's simply one fool among many perfectly fine folks, many of whom have been a great help in spreading the word about the incident.
In hindsight I realize it was a foolish thing to bring my originals, foolish and inconsiderate. Some of those pieces were commissioned by folks a while back, some more recently, (I'll send word out to more recent commissioners whose pieces were stolen, but in general, if I didn't send it to you, and you commissioned me before June of this year, the original was likely stolen).
Again, this was very stupid and irresponsible of me to bring all this work out into the open, I wasn't thinking ahead, and I apologize from the bottom of my heart to those who had their work stolen.
Most of my work that was in that folder was scanned, but many small pieces, scraps here and there, and a lot of my really old work is gone now.
If at all possible, I would like to have the work returned to me somehow. I don't give a damn about right or wrong of the person who took it, I just want it back. As I mentioned above, most likely I'll never see this stuff again, but I'm willing to exhaust every possibility before giving up on it. For that, I'd could really use your help.
Please spread the word and keep your eyes open, repost this journal if possible, tell your friends, keep your eyes open, I NEVER sell originals online, just commissions, and prints now and then, so originals being sold should be a red flag. I'm not too savvy with many of the furry selling ports, so I imagine many others would have a better idea on where to look. Anyone, ANYONE, producing the folder to me, or giving me information that leads to the return of the artwork will have a handsome reward waiting for them.
Again, most of the work I've done in my entire artistic life was in that folder. There's no monetary value to come from keeping it from me.
To those who've commissioned me at the convention, and online, I'm going to get back to work on the commissions as soon as possible, I've just got to get the word out on this quick while there's any sliver of chance that I'll see my work again. I'm really sorry about this, I wish I could have gotten your purchases to you sooner. If you commissioned me at the con, please sent a note and we'll work out shipping arrangements.

How would you have known they would have been stolen and especially by a person I am presuming has been stalking you this entire convention to plot a break-in to your SELECTED vehicle.
If you attended the closing ceremonies, youll have heard we had 560 attendee's.
I give the estimate a quarter of them were artists (DD & Artist Alley) and even those who didn't bother to sign up for a spot of either.
Then you have people like me who are collectors that just so happen to tote around their sales, a number I cannot fathom.
All of whom carry originals and supplies. Are we all fools for bringing them with us? No.
They are necessities for a convention and any circumstance can lead to their demise.
You are not a fool for bringing them, but the douchedick/cunt who decided to steal from you decided you were an easy target.
While as it was stated the hotel had no obligations of responsibility to your break-in, I hope you were able to push the idea of finding video evidence.
As I'm sitting here discussing it with
The very fact not only your art was taken, but also all your art supplies, leads me to suspect you were targeted by an artist or even an aspiring-artist who KNEW what you had and knew exactly what to go after when you left it alone.
And as she just told me, about half the convention attendee's(maybe less) were even left for closing.
This person was there, they knew who you were and knew exactly what you'd be doing.
There can't be much problem finding this individual for persecution.
Alas, there is not much we can do now, except watch for your originals to pop up on bidding sites in due time, hoping you forgot about the loss.
I'll be doing more research and signal-boosting later today.
Once again, sorry for your losses. I do hope you return to IFC next year.
I did push the idea of finding video evidence, but I also looked back and found that there aren't any cameras in the garage save for a few key spots, and whoever took the originals likely went straight to their car after.
Folks have been extremely helpful in spreading the word, someone also told me about a puppet show that a lot of folks watch that might make an announcement about it, I may have to find their contact info. On top of that, folks have given me a few websites that folks tend to sell this sort of work on, so I'm trying to keep an eye on those as well.
Thanks again for all the help. I'd be happy to attend more of these, it just depends on my job and $$$ situation.

ill spread the word around about what has happened. that was my first convention and i loved it and now hearing about this is a bit of a sour note :-/
It was my first convention as well, but I had a great time, most folks were very kind and appreciative, and I got a lot of sales that will cover the damages.
Awesome meeting ya too, had a good time and met a lot of interesting folks.
I don't know you, or anything of the sort. But I despise thieves. I hope you get your belongings back, and I hope whoever did it gets their justs.

Best of luck recovering the works!
From what i have seen i would keep an eye out on Furbuy.com sunce i see alot of art go through there. I will definately let you know if i see something that looks like yours or is something that looks like your art
I wouldn't let this keep folks from going to cons, should I find work with an adequate schedule, I'd like to go to another soon. I'll just be sure to secure my things more appropriately next time.
This pisses me off >:(
People are sooo selfish!
seems like this con had some major hiccups and incidents from the police being called to someone stealing from my dealers table after hours.
Who knows, might have been the same folks. It was similar behavior, there were many valuable things in my car, but only the art was taken.
Not saying any of this to be rude just to help you be prepared to prevent future events. I am very sorry your stuff was stolen and hope you get it back soon.
Thank you for the concern though, it's appreciated.
Your stuff is not safe in your your car at all. Not even in your trunk. Several of the car break-ins we had targeted the trunk because they knew the valuables would be there, if there were any. Sometimes the criminals watched them to see where they put the stuff. The BEST thing to do in that situation is any alternative to leaving valuables in a vehicle. Ask the front desk if they're able to hold onto bags for you for a little while, maybe ask some trustworthy buddies if possible, or even requesting a late checkout if need be is a better option. I know it's not always a possibility depending on the circumstances, but it's safer than leaving them in a car.
Keeping your stuff safe while traveling just sucks. Lol. That's all there is to it. XD
I'll be making a post on my website and journal(s) in a little while.
As for keeping things safe, the trunk of your car or under some sort of covering inside the passenger compartment (jackets, rain coats, the sort of things that are expected in cars) are both excellent places to secure things. Another trick is to keep things on you at all times, even if it means taking your bag into the bathroom stall with you. If you have lots of things to carry with you, get a rolling bag, it makes things easier to carry.
I hope you get your pieces and everything back. Disgusting behaviour from scum brings us all down.
I've spread the word as well. I am so sad for you. I was one of the many that walked by and took a look at your gorgeous art. I really hope you get your originals back. It seems like a longshot but I hope you do.
Thank you again.
Hope the lowlife scum, get theirs. GOD help them, if they fall into a den of Furries!! Ha!
You have my sympathy, hope this helps: http://www.furaffinity.net/journal/4950223/
I'm so sorry this happened.
I linked back to this journal as well as to your acct here and your dA acct
DO not blame yourself one little bit. Jerks happen and the fact they aimed fort your art means a obsessed fan/stalker..so if they post and they will sooner or later even to brag they got them, said furson will get a good beating from the fandom.

You're not a fool or selfish for bringing your originals - we all do it. I hope you find them again! I'll spread the word.
Word spread. Prayers going up your work is returned.
Hopefully the person who committed the act is smacked with a busload of guilt and returns it.

Thank you very much
I'm sorry that the enjoyable time you had at the con was tainted by this incident and that we couldn't do more for you.
I hope that your art and supplies are both returned to you intact!
You know, I would also like to offer that you think back to who came by your table acting weird. I know most people don't pay attention to that. But I used to work in loss prevention. Usually they will case you after generally just looking. Maybe they couldn't afford you and tried to haggle? Do you know a client or peer in arts that was bitter to you that you could see if they went to the con? You can usually find their "con reports" being fairly helpful to their location.
Lastly, um, do you do secret signatures? I do, because my signature was cut out of all the works put back online as some girl's profile. (when I had gear stolen, it was corsets, and costumes but wasn't furry related) large amounts of art stolen and your materials makes me think its going to be and artist, and one that will try to work over your originals, change your name, and such.
Bummer. I will pass this along to my punk community, as they are horror fans that sometimes dip in fantasy or fur, but they are good for finding stolen goods. My fa has no exposure for a repost, but I will do my best the old school boot stomp style.
I do use a particular signature, it can be seen in all of my 2013 works, and a few of my 2012 works. Before that I used a pentagram, which can be seen on a lot of my works as well. Most of these are in pen, some in heavy pencil.
There are folks that acted odd, and I've kept their names at hand just in case, but currently I have no real reason to pursue the idea that it was indeed them. Should further evidence pop up though, I have their names in pocket.
I appreciate the open eyes!
I can at least spread the word on my jorunal.
The community has been really great about the situation, and I really appreciate it.
It really sounds like someone targeted you from the start, and kept a close eye on your work somehow. This was your first convention, so it had to have been someone you associated with there quite well, otherwise how would anyone know of you? And you probably casually mentioned about the folder, and even allowed some people to riffle through it. Someone had to have tailed you, otherwise how would they know what car you had? Is it at all possible hotel security might have footage of you leaving the premises, and someone perhaps following you suspiciously from behind? I'm SURE they have cameras at the hotel entrance, right?
Also, it couldn't have been someone who stayed at the hotel. A smash and grab like that, you're in and out really fast, and you wouldn't bother to stop and steal something if you're on your way out with hotel bags or a suitcase. If the perp did indeed make a re-entrance into the hotel WITH the folder, by some stupidity, cameras would have him dead to rights too. (I'm just assuming it was a "he" here, sorry guys).
I'd recheck with the hotel, and definitely see if you can get any camera footage from the entrance after 3:30. That's where it all started...*takes a puff from her water-pipe*
I may check around again soon just to be sure. I appreciate the concern.
I remember who you are, and I'm part of the small group of artists you were hanging with for a while Friday morning(I suggested you raise your prices cause you're really good!). If you choose to attend next year and ever at any point need to stash things and cant get to your room/have checked out already, please let one of us know and we wont have a problem at all storing it in our room! It seems this IFC was really high on the awful-things-happening meter :C
I'm so sorry this happened, especially if this was your first con experience :CCC
I mean fucking hell, the audacity.
Hope you find it.
What makes people do such a thing? It's even worse when it happens to someone like you, who was hoping for a good first experience
I know you still had a pretty good experience. Just... dang. One person can really ruin a lot.
Posting a journal to help spread the word, even in just a small way.
I can't help but think it would be a good move to post digital versions of all the stolen work, so everyone who sees the journal can know what pieces to look out for~
Best wishes, and I really must apologize on behalf of the fandom for the few who seem to think that's an acceptable approach to acquiring artwork. I'll give this a signal boost and see what I can do about getting it posted elsewhere.
Most of my gallery here and on deviantart was stolen, I think there's only one or two pieces I have scanned that were not uploaded. I've since backed up everything on a separate hard drive too, just in case something happens to anything digitally ;)
I didn't think it was severe as ALL your work, that's even worse :I
Ooooh, we all have the one experience with digital storage that makes us learn the hard way about the importance of backing stuff up xD Good call on the separate drive x3
I don't know how anyone could justify doing something like this...It's this kind of thing that makes me distrust people. If someone stole my orriginals, I would be devastated. I hope you find them.
More than happy to help signal boost!

First, someone at work doodles & rips my locker decoration for reasons I don't understand, then I hear thieves, called "Sliders", steal stuff straight from peoples' cars while they're gassing up at a gas station, then some sick b
hacks into a baby monitor & says things that should never be said to a 2 year old, and now some random a--hole steals your art that you probably worked very hard on?!
What the hell happened that is making most of humanity sink so low?!
Then there was this back in 2011... http://www.furrynewsnetwork.com/201.....s-booked-days/
Not saying the 3 furs in that article were involved in either your incident or the one at Morphicon, but it goes to show that the fandom does have its villians.
I really hope that they find who did this.
Secondly, I am sorry that your first convention experience was tarnished by the actions taken by this individual. Most people who identify as furry are upstanding folks who take pride in the fandom and do their best to look after one another. Furry means different things to different people, but I've found it used the most commonly as a kind of "blanket society" for people who are outcasts. Many furs are geeks, nerds, socially awkward, people with disabilities, people with different sexual identities, ect, all meeting under this furry banner to socialize with like-minded people.
That being said, not everyone who comes under the furry magnet is an outcast for innocent reasons. You will occasionally run into people with psychological problems that push them into socially unacceptable behaviors. Most of the worst of these individuals follow consistent patterns and are well recognized by those in the fandom. And some people are just douchebags. Anyhow, fandom thefts are not uncommon, although this is the first time I've heard of someone being desperate enough to actually smash in a car window for something that wasn't a fursuit.
I will repost this to my own journal. It's honestly a crapshoot as to whether or not your art will turn up again, but the more people that know about this the better. Furries tend to have networks of close friends, so maybe our errant theif will show some of your originals around, if not to sell, than possibly to pass off as his or her own works.
At first it was a bit disconcerting to see the fandom that way, but the community response has been great. The con was fun, and the help I've received since has given me a better appreciation for the fandom, and I'm glad to have visited it.
I will keep my eyes open. Good luck! I hope they find this guy and justice will be served.
Thank you very much :)
Unfortunately my car has its trunk openly attached to the passenger seats, so it's just as visible back there. But I'm going to be taking further precautions in the future.
I can't believe someone would do that. What a douchey thing to do!
Spreading the word as best I can, over IM, Twitter, etc. My husband and I staff many conventions of various types along the East Coast; I will be keeping a sharp eye out for anything resembling your artwork.
I do hope to attend future conventions, it more depends on my job situation and finances, this certainly hasn't discouraged me from going to them, I had a great time, met a lot of folks, and made enough money at the con to cover the damages.
Thank you again :)
Scour the furry ebay sites for artwork that you drew; were I the thief, I'd try and sell off a binder like that and make some cash.
If you find your own artwork for sale, buy it.
When bought, the thief will send you the artwork.
You will then have their ADDRESS.
I'm so sorry you have to deal with that kind of BS.
I will keep an eye out and do some searching.
I will try and pass this info along, I don't have many watchers so hopefully someone with more can pass it along.
I'm so sorry this happened. We'll all do our best to help track the stuff down for you. At least, we'll do everything legal.
Not in MY fandom.
This was probably done by a crackhead looking for stuff to sell for drugs.
I'll tell you what I think happened, based on my long years of experience,
Some crackhead was in the parade scoping out cars. He sees a car with bags and stuff on the seat and thinks he sees an easy score. He pops the window, grabs the bags and stuff on the seat and runs for it by way of the closest stairwell.
Crackheads aren't going to spend time to search a car for other valuables unless they know they have time to do it. In a public parkade in the late afternoon, it's going to be strictly a smash-and-grab. A crackhead will pop your window just to steal the change out of your ashtray if it's visible.
Once the shithead took what he thought was valuable that he can sell for drugs, the rest probably ended up in the dumpster.
If they catch the creep(s) I hope their hung by their PINKIES!
i find it horrible that someone steals artwork in this way and it is honestly also an eye opener for me since i will attend with leather works on eurofurance. anyway i hope you find the thief and feed him to the wolfs!
Journal posted http://www.furaffinity.net/journal/4967565/
Also, don't blame yourself for bringing the originals. No one can ever know when a thief pops up. :(
