A Different Kind of Help- Searching for a Kidney
12 years ago
It’s hard to share a chunk of my personal life with people I don’t even know, but I’m going to put this out there in hopes I can find something.
On July 10th, I was admitted to the hospital because of an abscess in my shoulder and some startling test results that had doctors worried about my kidneys. I stayed for 3 and a half weeks, put on dialysis in attempt to bring my kidney functions back to normal.
After my hospital stay, I continued dialysis for a week when my kidney doctor declared that my kidneys were not improving, and diagnosed me with Stage 5 Renal Failure. I hate dialysis, and I can’t bear the thought of being poked with needles and hooked up to a machine 3 times a week for the rest of my life, crushing any hopes of traveling for vacations because I need that stupid machine. I’m not even sure if I can return back to work, and my bills are piling high.
So, I am in search of a kidney donor. I’m A negative, so a donor would have to be either A negative or O negative. General regulations say that you must be at least 18, and no older than 70, and be in excellent health. Donor recovery time is expected to be about a month, but can generally go back to work in 2-3 weeks, depending on their job. I'm located in sunny Florida.
If you can't donate a kidney and would like to help, the best way is to just spread the word, and I’d be grateful for it! If you feel you need to help more, I have a donation link below. Please note: I am only putting the link up here because people asked for it. I don’t like taking money that I can’t give something in return, but I will still truly be grateful for any generosity.

best wishes.
I'll see what I can do.
I wish there was more that I could do to help :(
I hope you find a donor! Internet well-wishes!
I am sorry man, I wish you the best of luck.
I'll signal boost!!!
Since I know that I am clean, I just say no to that question anyway. I make every partner I am with take a blood test with me before we have sex because I am really cautious. Male or female, I make them get tested with me so that both of us know and have peace of mind.
"It isn't about trust, it is about both of us having the peace of mind of making love without consequence." - This line is like a magic key to the lock of getting tested. :P
*HUGGGGS*
I don't think I qualify for healthy, last time I asked about the terms of healthy, but I think I didn't make the cut for terms of healthy. (healthier now but wasn't previously so not sure.) When I used to smoke one of my friends worked at a donation clinic, found out my blood type, and slapped me for it.
I hope you get things sorted out.

I am so sorry... *hugs*
I will post a journal and spread the word.
I hope you can get the help you need, take care.
I'll try and spread the word as I can <3
Signal Boosting you.
I really do hope a donor comes along.

Who's with me?
My health conditions: http://www.furaffinity.net/view/11274760
Not sure what bloodtype I am, but I'll try and get that checked out ASAP.
I'm so sorry honey I wish I could, don't have much use of these kidneys anyways.
I have no problem buying my way to Florida if I'm a compatible match to be honest.
I made an fa, IB and Twitter posting of this hoping to help you find someone.
I do hope you get better, best wishes!
my bro had where it didn't show his bloodtype on the document..)
but getting a blood test from a doctor (for medical checkup and other reasons)
could tell you!
that information over the phone to prevent information leakage! They might
want to re-schedule an appointment, but I wouldn't know offhand.
Best thing to do would be to call for sure ' w '
I'd help more but I don't know my blood type and my health is likely too poor...
Best of luck to you! -offers long-distance hugs-
Good luck D:
Ill spread word tonight when I'm done with chores
I know exactly how rough dialysis is through and through
Im throwin this up on twitter :<
http://www.furaffinity.net/journal/4982489/
But all the best to you. My thoughts are with you.
I can boost the signal though.... Best of luck to you.
And do I have to be fully mature physically...? I'm 16, but ya only need one kidney, right ^^? I can do without em both.
didn't finish reading it all , just kinda sprung into action >^<
I wish you much luck!
It looks like you've got a ton of willing people to help as much as they can though. <3
I can't tell if this is a world-class troll or just a completely stupid attempt to get "donations" from people.
Either way, from look at the artist's history I have to say this is 100% legit. This artist never asked anything this important before and never been on Artist Beware or any other website that points out bad conduct.
I am happy your sister doing better now.
Now with my grandmother caring for her she pays bills has a GED and is starting to act her age. Since she has always been in this position she has a low age mentality. I think last checked she was a age 12.
And as others have pointed out, getting a kidney from a list takes time...though donors can choose their beneficiary.
May you never be in need of a transplant or dire straits.
Honestly though, I'm dead serious. I'm not looking for donations, I'm looking for a kidney. As you can see from the other comments, kidneys in donor programs take years and years. If you're still skeptical, I'll be happy to take some photos of me with the giant ugly dialysis port in my chest, and a scan of my hospital discharge papers.
I would love to hear 99 other ideas you have of receiving a kidney!
This isn't one of those cases. But I can understand the skepticism.
There's quite a few furs offering their kidney, I amazed and happy. I hope this will all fall into place for you.
I'm sorry if you don't want to hear this but i thought you would like knowing about others in your situation. Maybe talk about it.
But no matter what i am hoping for the best for you and that you get the best care you need.
also my gf wrote a journal to SB this.
UF and Shands. They have a lot of programs and what not for kidney patients
I will spread the word
http://www.furaffinity.net/journal/4982827/
I do hope the best for you.
Best wishes, keep your chin up <3
But if you're not in need of "monetary donations" (assuming finances are decent enough)
Why not have people donate towards a pool to give to the individual who can donate their kidney?
Or perhaps to cover their travel to you if they're out of state?
Sometimes a bit of $$$ can ease the decision and speed the process!
^u^ Just a thought, again, good luck.
I can understand reasons for this rule.
For me, I'm O+ and in good health, but not excellent - I'm out of the running. Best I can do is positive energy your way. May you speed to the top of the donor list and stay somewhat healthy in the meantime. *hugs*
My dog tags tell me I'm O-Pos so I'm afraid I can't be much use to you there
I'll spread the word okay? Good luck~

Good luck sweetie!

Also, PLEASE donate blood. Your blood type is needed because of its rarity. :)
Each person has either +/+, +/-, or -/-. In order to have a negative blood type themself, a person needs to be -/-, because positive is dominant. If a parent has +/-, the parent has a positive blood type, but carries negative - so if both parents are +/-, or if one parent is -/- and the other is +/-, or if both parents are -/-, they can have offspring who are -/- and therefore have a negative type.
One or both parents could have a positive blood type but would need to carry a negative type by being +/- in order for their offspring to possibly have a negative blood type. Both parents need to carry a negative type in order to pass it on to their offspring. If one parent is +/+, offspring won't be a negative type; if both parents are +/+, offspring won't carry a negative type.
For a child to have AB- blood, the parents would need to be a combination of A for one and B for the other, or AB for one and either AB or another blood type for the other. Both parents, however, would need to carry a negative type, by being either +/- or -/-.
Even if all of these are met, the chances of it combining in such a way as to make AB- is not guaranteed.
TL;DR - AB- blood is rare, but it is a myth that people with AB- blood are related to one another within the past x generations.
True fact: All (inhereted) blue eyed people are descended from one person that lived 6k-10k years ago. o.o
Yep, a mutation in the Black Sea region is currently thought to be the source!
Unfortunately, I don't think I can do much else :(
But I'll keep you in my thoughts and prayers.
I'll spread the word, though! Good luck.
Perfect Health
Willing to donate/Also an organ donor.
Location: Texas
Money raised, I'd be more than willing to fly out.
I didn't know about the tissue portion though, I'll be sure to get that checked out too. Thanks for the info!
I won't be able to actually get myself tested until sometime after Monday as I can't drive and my parents went out of town..
I've got my medical records stashed away somewhere though, so I've been looking for those in the mean time.
I know I'm signed up as a bone marrow donor and an organ donor for things like this, so I might just call up the
blood donation centers around here and see what they have to say about it.

It is likely that everything will go well and you will live a normal, healthy life, but there is no surgery without risk.
If they bothered me I wouldn't volunteer.
Believe me, I know how difficult it /could/ get with complications and such arising.
But, to me, it's worth it if it helps someone else live a better life than their alternative.
I put up a journal, wish I could do more
I wrote about everything I went through on my FA journals and you are more then welcome to read them if you like. Or if you want to talk with me about it. Maybe I can put your mind at ease since I already went thought kidney failure. Went on dialysis and had a kidney transplant on July 3, 2012.
I hope you find some help soon
Like from a medical stand point or? Such as In-shape, etc? I'm not really in shape anymore, and kind of overweight as depression just eats away at me to the point I don't really do much anymore these days.. To be honest, I'm not even sure of my blood type, but I'm going to ask my mother in the morning. PM me a skype to reach you?
If you ever want to have any kidney chat, or learn more about PD, I'm but a note a away =) I feel your pain, I'm there and have been there. It's a serious matter, and there ARE options out there! Again, I'm there even if we're total strangers, I'd drop anything to help anyone else in this horrible disease to get through it or learn about better ways to cope.
and i live in the uk, so i cant help >.>
But ill spread the word.
Will signal boost you tough. Hope it helps.
Best of luck to you! Hang in there!
Mine best wish to find someone with a match for u
Plus different country
(can't remember if + or -)
I just know that I'm always being harassed by the blood bank because my type is always in high demand
I know I'm all the way on the exact opposite side of the USA but if it was plausible I would totally make the trip down
It's late so I'll signal boost tomorrow
I don't know why I remember this shit from bio class back in middle school, but I do. XD

I tried letting people on dA know too >n<;; I hope that's okay, but right now all I wish is for you to get better. <3

You're most likely going to be poked with needles for the rest of your life, and have to take anti-rejection meds on top of it even with a transplant. Dialysis will limit your duration away from the machine, but it does give you ample time to find a donor. Also, Kidney issues are common enough you may be able to secure a spot at a dialysis facility away from home, but if you're in CKD stage 5, your worry should be about survival, not about how much of a burden dialysis is or inability to travel. They call it 'end stage failure' for a reason.
Also, Luckypan up there had awesome advice, and I'd follow it all. Your best bet is probably family or a cadavar, and while you may find some willing furries with your bloodtype, they'd have to be transported in, screened, and tissue matched. That doesn't help your financial situation, and it's a long process that's not very likely to find a match.
There is no quick fix to this. You're scared now, and upset, but this requires a lifestyle change, hope, and vigilance. Even with a new Kidney, your life will never quite be the same since you'll need lifelong meds and monitoring. Get in contact with people in a similar situation and hit up your family members. Get on a waiting list. Be proactive. Nobody is going to swoop in to save you, but you have valuable time now, don't waste it.
I;m not sure you really understand what all is involved in this, if you think my only "worry" is not being hooked to a machine and travel. I'm worried about death. Believe me, I was hoping that this was temporary and my kidney function would go back to normal. I know there's nothing "quick" about this, and have never implied it. I have spoken with a huge team of doctors and surgeons about this, discussed many options, and this was the best course of action for me personally. I'm aware it's a huge lifestyle change, but I've already had quite a few of those and am prepared to make another.
Asking random furries for a kidney? Really? I mean, if it pans out, go you! But please sign up for a transplant waiting list as soon as possible too.
When you're desperately in need of something, people reach out to others any way they can for help. This isn't the only place that I've posted this, and this won't be the last I post about this. I don't see what's so wrong about reaching out to this community as well. I have everything to lose if I don't reach out, and nothing to lose if I do.
You should also explain that they can get tested anywhere in the country! Many people do not understand that you can be many states away and get tested to check for a match. Bloodtype isn't the only factor, as anti-bodies are a massive issue as well and can change at any moment. So the person donating should be definitely informed that it's a serious process, taking time and commitment. Folks will leap at the chance to help until they realize the time and effort it takes - so be certain to give out as much information as possible. You may want to amend your journal up there about this.
Kidney failure is a scary thing, but you have a lot of options right now. Take your time, take notes, consult your team and become your own best advocate. Take a deep breath, you have time on your side as this disease is something with many treatments and good programs.
And one more tip - Be very careful about accepting flat out donations through Paypal. Should you become part of a fundraising team (trust me, it's a necessity) you will no longer be able to accept donations that are taxable. Should you be accepted on SSI and SSD, they will be very picky about your income, work, and how you are getting funds. So accept donations with caution! It's just better to go with a professional organization. If you have a social worker, bring it up asap! (If they're GOOD they will already be doing this)
Sorry about the tl:dr, but I have been dealing with this for 3 years, and holy hell, I got a lot of help to give.
There is a lot of good advice and information above about transplants, dialysis and so on. Take a deep breath, read, then act.
I hope that your diagnosis improves and you find a donor soon. Facing a lifetime of medical woes isn't pleasant; I'm living proof of that... but I am living and enjoying life despite the health issues. I hope you will, too.
Unfortunately, even if I had the right blood type (I think I'm O positive; I need to check my blood donor card), I'm only seventeen...
I also have a huge change of developing type 1 diabetes, so I think that kicks me out of most donation-type stuff anyways? :/
I know I'll see this journal again later today, so I'll try to signal boost it when I'm not so busy.
Would also help to know what part of Florida, as I live in Kissimmee/Orlando area
Sadly, I cannot donate. :( I have several health problems :( But I will send a signal boost, though not many follow this dragon :(
But every little bit helps, right??
Do you know if we have to be in the same state to donate, or will they like ship it or something? /clueless
I am the right tissue type but I can not donate. I am a cancer survivor and the doctors told me, when I got checked, that I couldn't donate becuase of the chemo still lingering in my body. I am so sorry.
May the goddess bless you and blessed be!
I will continue to signal boost for you!
We are trying hard to get him on medicare, the bills are piling up. The good thing is, like some have mentioned, you can do it yourself, at home, or wherever you go. We also found that even if you are to travel, there are lots of dialysis clinics everywhere (Even on boat cruises!) You just have to plan ahead, call, etc. You CAN travel. And i believe even when you are at stage 5 you can continue living a somewhat normal life with dialysis. Many people live over 20 years on it, and i'm sure you will too!
Sadly, if your dialysis is costing as much as his, donations will not come near close to how much it costs :(
Here's hoping for the best, for you.
The cyber-piss is not living.
Best wishes.
Signal boosting for you here and on sofurry in the hope that you can safely recover soon.
I don't think my blood type matches (but I could be wrong... So I'' have to re-check)
But I'll definitely be re-posting this, and try to donate some monies later on.
And in wrong country.
But Journal to spread word is out: http://www.furaffinity.net/journal/4988896/
Hope something helps
However I do have a little money I could send your way, if you're okay with accepting it? Just let me know! -snugs-
Do they know what happened to make your kidneys go haywire? Did it have something to do with the abscess?
I'll repost this on my Mario Bros cosplay page too.

My mother was willing to donate her kidney to one of their friends. The process to do so is long, trialing, and really really rocky. The doctors did not treat her like a person, but rather just a store where they could get what they want and leave. I understand this is not the case with every single doctor or person who does donations at all, but that was our experience and that was just not okay. There are mental health doctors that will make you second guess a lot ("What if your child, parent, sibling, relative needs one?", and make sure you're mentally willing. Just remember, it's just not a cut and dry thing.
Please think about your decision before you say "I'm willing!" It's a scary process and I want you to know that.
If anybody actually does go through with this I will commend you. You'd be a very very strong person, and a very kind one at that. If you can and are afraid to, don't be. There is nothing wrong with not wanting to give it up. The best thing anyone of us can do is spread the word and donate if we can.
Please don't take offense to my statement, I am just spreading some experience along.
Signal Boost - GO!
http://www.furaffinity.net/journal/4996932/
I have problems with my right kidney because of scarring that has to be checked every year to see how it's doing. I go in Sept. to find out if it's gotten any worse. I know how bad mine makes me fell at times, but I can't even imagine how yours are affecting you. Hugs and comfort to you.
Mean time, did docs suggest you do kidney-healthy type stuff like drink a lot of water and cranberry juice, or maybe go on some supplements or something to at least try and keep things from getting any worse than they are now? One thing I will say, avoid aspirin at all costs right now. My mom practically OD on aspirin once and it shut her kidneys down, so if you have unhealthy kidneys, you want to avoid that.
