RPG Idea: Dark Science Fantasy Space Opera
    12 years ago
I just had a bit of a brainstorm! While I'm playing Vega Conflict it hit me as a kind of weird revamp of Dragonstar in Pathfinder. Take everything that has been done so far as far as monsters and classes adapt what is going in in Clockwork Gnome's Starlit Sea to slightly more hard core sci-fi like Babylon 5 and Farscape add in some of the ideas of Star Wars but the evil empire that everyone is afraid of is not mind flayers but either a hegemony or conflicting empires of Lovecraft monsters. Interstellar empires ruled by the elder things, the aboleth, moon beasts (maybe make Leng a desolate planet instead of a dimension) and other powerful aberrations. Elves, dwarves and other standard fantasy races are aliens and furries are an off-shoot of humanity created with weird science (i.e. a mad alchemist named Moreau perhaps?) and all of them must work together against a common threat: The Shadow Zone and its aberrations masters.
Now for the furs that may not know what the yiff I'm talking about, Dragonstar was a neat concept in gaming that in some ways was an evolution of a previous idea called spelljammer that was a science fantasy setting for D&D. Dragonstar presented a new idea to me that suddenly made some things make sense in that wizards had digital spellbooks. Those of you who have reading tablet whether it be a kindle, a nook, an iPad or whatever else is out there think of what you could do as a wizard in this sort of setting where that tiny tablet you own and carry around with you was the depository for all your spells and scrolls. That's right, a small electronic device is what these wizards and alchemists study from to make with the magic. You even had scrollware which was scrolls on the same device that functioned like the same fire and forget scrolls you use in traditional D&D.
In this setting blasters are rifles and pistols enchanted to fire magic missile spells or something similar. Psionics is available of course and I have rules for that. Every Lovecraft monster in the bestiary is ripe for plunder by me the GM. I am liking this quite a bit. Science Fantasy Space Opera with a side of Lovecraft, oh the possibilities.

LOL! This is an idea I have but I don't make games professionally. But if one person has that reaction it does encourage me. I may have to look into starting a company to produce this. If you're going to Fur Fright, please do discuss this with me at some point. I will be running another system all weekend but I may develop this for Fur Fright 2014 and beyond if enough folks want it. Heck, I may approach folks with the idea and see if I can either sell it, or get pointers on how to make like a pdf or more with this being the setting.

Sadly, i will not be able to attend this furfright in body this year, though every plan is for next year. I would have no problem chatting about it though.
