Oh Joy, Background Story for Zevus
If you ever feel like readin' some crap, here you go. It's pretty summarized and still needs some explanations, but I'm trying to cover any loopholes there may be. Let me know if you spot something that seems off. Questions and answers after the story.
High up in a mountain range, Zevus was brought up well disciplined and is a martial artist in training. His father trained him, never could get a true hang of it though. Zevus stood up for those that couldn't defend themselves with a more reckless fighting style.
He doesn't exactly like fighting, and will only do so for self defense and against acts of unjust. Later on he realized he had the power to cast healing spells by practicing in secret. Magic is not tolerated in his culture.
He finds Admiral later on (I'll need to think up how) in bad shape and brings him to the village. After a while, he founds out the Admiral can cast magic as well, and soon ends up in trouble.
So, the village wants Admiral kicked out, but Zevus is worried as he'll have nowhere to go, (Admiral's not old enough or experienced at this point to go alone, I should also mention that Zevus is a teen at this point.) Zevus explains that not all magic should be considered evil or destructive, some can be used to help. The elder says that's impossible. A group arrives at the village with some in bad shape, Zevus goes to help and becomes known that he has those healing powers. Elder is not amused, and Zevus says to the elder that if he was in a life or death situation would he refuse to let Zevus help him? Obviously, Zevus took it too far when he said that and the whole village gets enraged. His father steps in at this point and defends his son, by saying that he's still immature, he doesn't know what he's saying or about magic etc. They then lock up Admiral and Zevus to do physical labor, while they think of what to do, as the "cleansing" isn't something his father wants to happen. (Like I said, I need to find out what they'd do) Almost a week later, something attacks the village, (not sure what, I'll tell you my ideas of what it might be afterwards) The thing destroys buildings and kills off many with fire, ice and earth. (magics)
Zevus's father rushes to set Zevus and Admiral free of the cell and told them they all need to run. He was hurt and Zevus healed him. He said to his son, he believes magic is only as evil as the person who wields it. Before they could make it out of the village, Zevus's father was hit with Ice partially freezing him. There was nothing Zevus or Admiral could do to break him out of it while the thing begins to notice them. With no effort, the thing mortality wounds Zevus's dad, and stares down Admiral and Zevus. In a flash, the thing knocks them both back and disappears. Zevus rushes back to help his dad and realizes there's nothing he could do to help with the amount of healing knowledge he has. With that, Zevus's father died before his very eyes, while the village continued to burn. The elder and some guards and a few survivors show up. He tells Zevus, this is what magic does and that one day, they'll soon become tools of destruction. Zevus calls him a liar, and hits the elder with a frozen fist. Zevus just conjured ice to his hand. The elder orders the others to grab them and Zevus and Admiral run off into the forest. Zevus realized what he had done and was terrified of it. The creature, his dead father, the village. Everything was hard to take in all at once. From there, Zevus and Admiral were on their own as they managed to get away.
Questions and answers:
Question: Is the magic intolerance backed up by capital punishment or just exile?
Answer: It's more of a religious perspective, magic to Zevus's kind is considered to be something that no ordinary person should have. Having it means you rival gods to them. And that's a no-no. They'll need to be "cleansed" I'll have to put more thought into that bit as to how it'd be done.
Question: Does Zevus have recurring mental insecurities from the village episode?
Answer: Zevus becomes level-headed, serious, and protective from that point. He feels like it was his fault and he should have been stronger.
Question: How does he contrast to Admiral?
Answer: Admiral looks at Zevus as an older brother, and they do get along well as Admiral is more outgoing to lighten the mood if need be.
Question: What happens to them after escaping the village?
Answer: They make it to a town, and spend a few years there. Everything went well from that point on. Until the next main story event happens. So basically, a time skip.
Question: What were they doing? I'd assume Zevus was working protection detail/healing? What was Admiral up to?
Answer: Aha, that's where I should explain the world this takes place in. There are two split sides of the world, one that uses magic and technology daily while the other side doesn't use magic at all, or flat out can't. Being able to use magic on the non-magic side, is looked down upon. Zevus's culture took it way more seriously. You were an outcast, people were afraid of you. But generally, it was very rare for one to be born with it, and though anyone can learn it, it was insanely difficult to do/learn.
Admiral was possibly finishing up education and training under Zevus.
Question: When you say split, you mean...?
Answer: Different continents. Think of it as a first-world vs third-world.
Question: Which is the first-world? The magic side?
Answer: Yup.
Question: Do third-world non-magic users immigrate to the wealthier side for employment? Is there some kind of exploitation going on there? Or do they just not want to mix?
Answer: They don't want to mix. They enjoy the simpler life without magic. The magic side has the big polluted city, violence heavy, chaotic reputation, which of course isn't entirely true. There are thriving kingdoms on the magic side as well.
Anyway, pretty cliche and predictable.
If you have any questions not answered I'll see if I can answer them. I still need to think up explanations of some things, but this is what I got so far. Hope you like it. :I

Certainly a lot of hardships to take in all at once... It's really a good think Zevus seems like the very strong willed type because I can imagine all that at once could break most other people.
The magic and tech split seems like a neat idea too, wonder how interesting or scary the mix of the two could get.
Yup, he has to be able to handle all that being the leader of the group.
And yes, I'll have to play around with some ideas. So far all I have is: the magic side wants to invade and take over the non-magic side. No solid reason yet.
Ugh, I'll get around to posting my other character's back stories hopefully soon.
For some reason I keep thinking of Admiral as the leader, though Zevus does seem to have more of the traits of one.
Oh my, I suppose that does explain why magic would be looked down upon even more though...!
be sure to take your time, if you rush it they probably won't be as great! Also, good luck with them!
