Movie Recommendation of the Week

Week and a day late and it's back :-P
In Bruges
A comedy/drama mix (not a dramady, though) about two hitman who need to hide for a while after a botched job. Their boss selects a spot for them, a cozy little preserved-medieval town called Bruges (it's in Belgium). They're supposed to simply lay low and enjoy the sites for a couple weeks.
For one of them (the too-nice-to-be-a-hitman Brendan Gleeson), this is no problem. He enjoys seeing the historical sights and easy country folk. For the other (the actually-not-annoying-for-once Colin Farrel), it's a true nightmare. He's a city guy, and being out in the country is boring him to tears. Meanwhile, as they try to adapt, their boss (the completely brilliant Ralph Fiennes) is planning something that may not go over so well with the boys.
It's a dark comedy of a film, and an absolutely hilarious one at that. The jokes are mostly how they talk and the subjects, and some are endlessly quotable in an inside-joke kind of way (the alcoves... :P). Plus, there's midgets. Being filmed. A film about midgets, as it were. Can't argue with that.
The film is also rather sad at times, and it's interesting how it gets to the sad parts. It tends to mix them directly with the funny scenes, and more than once there's a point where a conversation starts out funny, and then in the same breadth it gets dramatic and tearful. It's a masterful mix, done very well by this first time feature director Martin McDonagh (though he did win an Oscar for a short film, and is a season playwright. In short, expect great things from him in the future).
Throw in some good (if simple) gunplay, lots of swearing (even they think it's a bit much) and a general grim, slightly macabre atmosphere, and you've got one hell of a great film. A true sleeper hit for this year, and one I insist you all check out.
