It's not a put down, they need people who get lots of views, post tons of art and journals to make sure their new feature will perform correctly while being user friendly. No offense to anyone but I don't think it would bring much feed back to those of us with less followers/who don't upload as much.

It's not really an opinion. It's that the issue only really affects, or most noticeably affects, users who have very large numbers of watchers. It's not playing favourites, it's not putting anyone down. It's just how this particular issue works.

When someone is looking for people who meet a certain criteria that they need, it's not a put-down to people who just don't meet that criteria.

I assumed that that means on a daily or bi-daily basis when said as normally, sorry for my misunderstanding. That was my only concern, as I've noticed a handful of users with a good amount of users sometimes post every other week, or show small amounts of visible activity. Whatever the case, good luck and I hope it helps solve a lot of the site's problems.

This is happening at even lower watcher counts, I can't imagine what it is like at 10k or above.

10k watchers? That's pretty steep. According to popufur, there's only 198 people that meet requirement 1. Considering the other requirements, much fewer than that will have the time or interest in participating in a patch test. Due to the nature of the patch being tested, requirement 1 must stand firm. If simulation isn't possible, maybe just contacting the small number of artists that qualify and asking them is the way to go.

Personally, what I have against them, is for people like me who can't spend like 100+ on a pic, YCHs are impossible. And it's just like...sometimes TORTUROUS to see a pic that our character or sona COULD be in that we LOVE the idea or pose or something of, but it wont happen cuz all YCHs end up going into HUGE numbers.
Another thing about it I don't like, is 9/10 times you get the same quality pic, for a higher price. Example: a flat color pic is say $20? They have a YCH that will be flat colored in the end. the bidding goes up past like $100. You just paid upwards of 100 bucks for a $20 pic.
Though, I DO VERY much see the appeal and gain behind the buissiness end. because of the above reason, you are making a MASSIVE profit. So I see it from both ends. I personally, am just on the disliking them end. But that's just my opinion, and others will have theirs, and everyone is entitled to their own opinion.

Not all YCH's go to huge numbers. I've won a number of them for minimum bids of 5$ - 20$.
and a 20$ commission going for 100$+ I don't think is an accurate representation of the majority of YCH's at all. That's an extreme end of the spectrum if anything. Most YCH's I see go for maybe double / triple at best.

One of the things you have to keep in mind though is that YCH's are not Commissions. They're a completely separate product with different advantages and disadvantages, and some of the advantages to them such as "limited availability" are what reasonably drive up the price. Granted though I understand where you're coming from though that you can't afford to spend that much money on YCH's. I can't either, but they are a luxury item and I'm ok with that. xD

most YCHs I've seen they go for WAY over the normal price, but that's just me.
and really? never seen one go that low XD oh well, that's just what I'VE seen, and I havent seen everything last I checked XD

The time requirement is apparently sending a note to say they want to participate, and nothing else.

Rather than an announcement to the entire population, which contains legitimate QA testers (cough) that might be initially excited by the headline and then let down by what you're actually looking for, it would have been better to just send a note to everyone with enough watchers to fulfill your criteria. Simple DB query, simple DB insert.

Simple query = selecting the users with > 8000 watchers. Yes, this is simple regardless of how big the site is.

It's simple to write, but not simple to execute. You don't want a query like that running on a production database. That said, backups would be a good place to query if relatively up-to-date ones are easily accessible.

My FA is also very slow at times, and I only have roughly 1000 watchers. Will this issue only be fixed for the more "important" popfurs out there or will this issue be fixed for us lesser people?

They don't need a wider audience. They need people with a metric fuckton (even though 8,000 isn't that many) of watchers because THOSE ARE THE PEOPLE HAVING THE UPLOADING ISSUES. People with just a couple hundred or thousand watchers aren't having the posting problems. They're testing the 'patch' or whatever on those with the issues to work out kinks, to then provide the benefits of the newly shining working patch to the rest of FA.

I'd be up for testing I suppose. What do I have to do..? ;o

I remember way back when, when the idea of recoding the update system came up, some of us tech nuts figured out that we could do away with the inbox database tables altogether by:

1. Replacing the submissions inbox with a continuous feed (similar to Facebook, though at the time I think the comparison was LiveJournal since it was that long ago), updating a "last submission viewed" ID in their account every time they visit the feed, and getting a count of submissions posted since that ID whenever they visit or refresh a page to serve as the "unread messages" number

2. Doing the same thing with journals, I guess

3. Discarding the table that holds comment and shout notifications in favor of a single boolean tickbox in each comment's table that would be cleared once it had been read and checked off by whoever it was replying to

4. Doing roughly the same thing with faves and watches, depending on how FA's database keeps track of who's watching whom and who's faved what to begin with

As for the issue currently being dealt with, in theory steps 1 and 2 would mostly eliminate it since nothing would actually get written at the point of posting; it would be done passively when the watcher visits a new page.

A feed system would be good for submissions/journals. Seems like messages would still be a more efficient method of handling comment/shout notifications, though, vs. sorting through the entire comments table every time to find out what is unread for a user.

The inbox format would still be used for comments, shouts, watches, and faves; it would just be programmed differently.

Oh yeah, definitely. But I'm not sure how efficient storing it as a boolean value would be, really. At least with messages you only have to search for what is presumably an indexed value for specific users. But searching by comments there would also need to likely be two new indexes made, one for the "read / unread" value, and another for the user the comment is directed to. (Shouts excluded due to their very direct nature, of course)

It almost seems like for the items that would stay in an inbox format, eschewing the traditional relational db model might be a good idea in general. But this is all for data retrieval, of course. Comments / watches/ favs / etc. don't run into the messaging issues they're having with submissions and journals, since they're almost always directed toward only one person, therefore only one entry needs to be made into the database. And FA's message center seems to be pretty stable in the non-submissions/journals world, and so long as you make it past the actual submission process retrieval seems fairly seamless. So not sure it would entirely be necessary.

Still fun concepts to think about though.
