[CLOSED] Have a LOT of Watchers? Testers Wanted!

Journal Start
We've received our current load for testers. We'll be reaching out to everyone selected once we've got the test environment setup.
Good news, everyone!
We have news that's NOT a banner update notification!
We're looking for testers to help put a patch through the ringer, and we need volunteers! Specifically, volunteers who meet a specialized criteria:
* Volunteers MUST have 8,000+ watchers
* Volunteers MUST have original, fresh content to post (submissions and/or journals)
* Volunteers MUST have an account in good standing
Interested? Send a note to THIS ACCOUNT! We're accepting 20 total volunteers to help out!
We're testing a patch that significantly modifies how FA sends out notifications. Currently, artists with large amounts of watchers may face timeouts when submitting journals or uploading new submissions, and in some cases notifications of the submission may get lost when this happens. This new update in testing instantly submits the journal or submission, then breaks up notifications into smaller batches. Watchers will be notified gradually until the list is complete.
The hideous Spider People of Taurus VII need not apply.
EDIT: Lowered watch count slightly to make it available for a wider audience.

Good luck
Perhaps more sensitivity is in order.
Burn them for their intolerance!
thanks for pointing that out><
Whelp, looking at the list of "top watched users on furaffinity" I think we can already figure out who those will be :P
Pretty much these guys. LOL
I have 1254 watchers and it still says I have 1039.
I think they update it every two months or so.
Like 2 years ago it used to update every day I think....?
Guess it only updates now when the guy running the site makes it do so.
I can't remember the names of some that do it.
sounds extreme...
owo
GOODLUCK! :D
This is kind of a put down to those who don't qualify...
I have mine, but I know people don't care, so I'll just drop this subject...
That's an irrationally egocentric way to view things. That's not me being insulting, it's simply a factually accurate description of viewing this that way.
The 8K was @ the lowered count as a joking "it's come down! I'd better hurry"
#2692
I found my icon somewhere other than my own page, so I got that going for me, which is nice.
Let's try 40,000.
if people will spend their days feeling bad about themselves for not being that recognized, instead of working hard to get that recognition. then they wont go anywhere
learned that by myself, i started from 0 too, it just takes time
dont think i just created an account and demanded people to appreciate what I do,like many others.
its not being positive,is about fighting for it.
so delusional.
the ones who care for themselves are the ones who prevails.
attention whores only generates drama to keep their boat floating.
if they worked hard to be recognized for what they do, then yays for them, they earned it.
we al have been "nobodies" at some point
recognition for what you do/how you are and treat others.
at the end, we all are just internet users that happens to draw.
And yes! It's in mah name! but it's so harddddddderlaksdasd;kflj -rolllllls away-
Good luck finding people that are willing to do the testing and have time to do the testing. Site seriously needs some testers. :T''
Why not ... I dunno ... test the database in a legit fashion using scripts and dummy uploads? You'd get a lot better results than trying to find a bunch of "popufur" users as an arbitrary limitation.
-__- im far from that number.
sneaky sneaky
huee huee huee huee
mine is an evil laugh
Tryyyyyying to get to 1/4th of that myself.
That... that counts, right?
But that's completely impossible.
THIS IS A MASCOT/NEWS ACCOUNT - Notes sent to this account WILL NOT be answered!
I FEEL SO CONFLICTED FENDER! WHY DO YOU DO THIS TO ME!
I understand what people have against them. But most of those reasons are just unreasonable.
Btw, I really like your icon. It's quite cute.
Another thing about it I don't like, is 9/10 times you get the same quality pic, for a higher price. Example: a flat color pic is say $20? They have a YCH that will be flat colored in the end. the bidding goes up past like $100. You just paid upwards of 100 bucks for a $20 pic.
Though, I DO VERY much see the appeal and gain behind the buissiness end. because of the above reason, you are making a MASSIVE profit. So I see it from both ends. I personally, am just on the disliking them end. But that's just my opinion, and others will have theirs, and everyone is entitled to their own opinion.
....
...
...
if this were youtube I think someone would shout at me for trying to say this in a kind, non-argumentative way XD
and a 20$ commission going for 100$+ I don't think is an accurate representation of the majority of YCH's at all. That's an extreme end of the spectrum if anything. Most YCH's I see go for maybe double / triple at best.
One of the things you have to keep in mind though is that YCH's are not Commissions. They're a completely separate product with different advantages and disadvantages, and some of the advantages to them such as "limited availability" are what reasonably drive up the price. Granted though I understand where you're coming from though that you can't afford to spend that much money on YCH's. I can't either, but they are a luxury item and I'm ok with that. xD
and really? never seen one go that low XD oh well, that's just what I'VE seen, and I havent seen everything last I checked XD
and I suppose that makes sense. doesnt stop the want though! XD
This might happen to be one of those times
Good luck with it though.
It's the bloated blood-sucking TICK people you should be hating!
But, even if it's not much for us who don't have many watchers, I'm sure whatever this is doing will help. ^o^
this is a thing?!?
IT IS.
http://www.popufur.com/
Dem numbers.
I connect with friends here. I don't sell art.
Also you got back to me VERY fast! Thank you lol

Way to go
Maybe there's a better way, but quite frankly if they get results I don't give a damn XD
I don't think i'll ever hit 8k in my lifetime on here, lmao.
I'm looking forward to seeing the double journals go away.
So can't help ya.
"Ooohh! You almost had it!! Ya gotta be quicker than that!!"
Im sure they already met their user quota.
I'm sure you'll get there. :)
shouldn't it say "artists WITH large amounts of watchers may face timeouts..." ?,
at first glance it looks like it's saying the artist's watchers will face timeouts
1. Replacing the submissions inbox with a continuous feed (similar to Facebook, though at the time I think the comparison was LiveJournal since it was that long ago), updating a "last submission viewed" ID in their account every time they visit the feed, and getting a count of submissions posted since that ID whenever they visit or refresh a page to serve as the "unread messages" number
2. Doing the same thing with journals, I guess
3. Discarding the table that holds comment and shout notifications in favor of a single boolean tickbox in each comment's table that would be cleared once it had been read and checked off by whoever it was replying to
4. Doing roughly the same thing with faves and watches, depending on how FA's database keeps track of who's watching whom and who's faved what to begin with
As for the issue currently being dealt with, in theory steps 1 and 2 would mostly eliminate it since nothing would actually get written at the point of posting; it would be done passively when the watcher visits a new page.
It almost seems like for the items that would stay in an inbox format, eschewing the traditional relational db model might be a good idea in general. But this is all for data retrieval, of course. Comments / watches/ favs / etc. don't run into the messaging issues they're having with submissions and journals, since they're almost always directed toward only one person, therefore only one entry needs to be made into the database. And FA's message center seems to be pretty stable in the non-submissions/journals world, and so long as you make it past the actual submission process retrieval seems fairly seamless. So not sure it would entirely be necessary.
Still fun concepts to think about though.
I seriously NEVER check my watchers, but I figured I had quite a bit. Wow, not even CLOSE. Must make more porn
Thanks guys!
FUCK. >.<
I only wish I could have helped but don't have 8K watchers just yet.
They only need people with 8k+ watchers because those are the people having the majority of the issues. Making this available to a 'wider audience' not only DOESN'T help them work out those issues, it will also bloat them down with six thousand times as many users going "PICK ME! PICK ME!"
getovahehtjeeze
oh no I broke the link

THAT'S SO ADORABLE IT SHOULD BE OUTLAWED.
a big issue with me tho, is that i find myself with close friends as "unwatched"
like if I unwatched them, but i never click said buttons
i just can only wonder if out of my 1300 unwatches (yes i keep track of that) how many people had this glitch of unwatching me and many others
sometimes it only brings drama once the other finds out youre not watching them x.x
and youre like wat, how, wait wat
For me it is not unusual to see this kind of comments:
Comment 1: Lal (from "Lol")
Comment 2: Lbl
Comment 3: Lcl
Comment 4: Ldl
And only "Lal" makes a little sense.
^ THIS! haha!
Peanut Butter cookies are awesome!
* Volunteers MUST have original, fresh content to post (submissions and/or journals)
* Volunteers MUST have an account in good standing
-I have 80 watchers
-I have crappy doodles and free sketches from people better at drawing then I am
-please describe 'good standing'
THIS IS BLASPHEMY.
This is perfect.
This is not a contest. There is no reward or gain from this. Nobody is idolised. And, in fact, this is a change for the better: the FA admins are seeking to exploit an opportunity to test new code. They aren't just releasing untested script. This is a good thing.
Get back to me in... I don't know... a decade! XD
You are the perfect candidate, Fender..
i don't either, and i do just fine ;)
the only reason this needs to be tested is because people with a lot of watchers experience problems when posting journals and new content because they're sending so many notifications out at once. its a positive thing because FA is trying to fix the broken stuff and people like you are just being whiny about it
Journal: "DO YOU LIKE CANDY? WHO WANTS IT!!:"
Me: :D YES!!
Journal: "you have to be popular.. SORRY."
Me: ;n; but I am known..
(That's how I see it D: )
But not in a blunt way. Just a silly way.
Maybe this journal could have been handled more sensitively, but in the end, I think it was sensitive enough. After all, most people should be able to understand that when you're testing new tech, you want to push it as hard as you can - and that means grabbing the people with the very most watchers possible.
also, off topic question but related to it, have users got more popular after getting a proffesionally made fursuit with good quality photos of them?
I may have a Lacy suit, 2 actually, but if you post pics occasionally people will begin to see you ^^ But I just love to fursuit to entertain others and I am very energetic and hyper in suit <3
fender plz
wellp this also means I'm out with both my accounts :'I
But this must be the reason posting journals and new submissions takes BAZILLION YEARS, I've been on the edge of throwing my computer off the window sometimes. But it's good to know it's not my internet! I'm up for testing cause I look very much forward into seeing this fixed! :3c
*Readies up a wiffle bat-
Isn't it easier too just ask them directly?
By the by... ...
paid name transfer services? pretty please, fa?
i can say this though you should increase the you can view when in your new submission folder when your watching more than 1k people
Not that I want any in any case, my FA page and I value our privacy.
WHY ARE YOU EVEN READING THIS!?!?
But still 8000 is a lot and not many people have that much
"Go out an attack this guy"
or
"This guy is autistic, therefore he must throw himself in front of a bus!"
I'm not being rude, just blunt. Any competent developer would want to test his code by putting it under the most stress possible.
There's lag in the uploading process because you have to send a notification to THOUSANDS of accounts.
People with few accounts watching them dont even notice the problem, so that's why they need accoutns with bigger fanbases.
didnt need his damn input anywaybut thanks for not saying something assy. It's nice they're fixing something that clearly requires fixing xD
Don't search for things to get offended by, as it will only make your life miserable.
Doesn't work that way, I'm afraid.
lol But seriously, why are people getting so offended? This journal isn't to see who's the most popular. I wonder if those people even read the journal before they started bawwing. O.o
But I guess people just love being the center of attention. *shrug*
Is there's nothing you people dont bitch about, holy crap..
God forbid Furaffinity tries to solve a multiple uploading and lag time issue because people sure will bitch about anything these days!
Welp, I'm halfway there.
In another 4 years or so, I'll be back.
KIDDING lol. Cant wait to see these new updates. Should prove useful. I know at 7500 watchers it takes an eon to host any new content (journal, submission, whatever) So I can only imagine the possible new updates may be geared towards improving that function. Just a thought. Anyways
/ramble
WOW.
at least it's finally being worked on.
Hello? c..c;
If you need anymore, I'm at around 11k c:
Great to hear you guys are working on this... I asked a friend just the other day how this problem of lag from "notify all watchers first" could be solved and we discussed this. Cool stuff :D
why not just make it an optional button or smthn
What would I have to do if accepted?
Somebody take a fucking screenshot.
You're telling me that you've actually gotten your rotund rectums off the sofa and done some work?
Not that this work completely invalidates my previous statements - until otherwise proven you're still a bunch of useless gits who can't code and optimise worth jack - but this goes some way to at least salving the major, glaring issues I have with the site staff - in that, you're a bunch of useless gits who can't code or optimise worth jack.
Well done. I'm actually impressed. Put some meat on that fork before I take a bite, and I might think twice about being so quick to judge in the future.
Its so sad for us people that aren't even popular. :(
But hey... people can dream of it though... :P
But at least I have SWAG
i thought i was on ign.com for a sec XD
gross sobbing
THANK YOU for addressing this issue it takes FOREVER to upload ANYTHING
If additional volunteers are needed later, I would help. Otherwise, THANK YOU x1000 for fixing this majorly aggravating problem!
Also, I don't seem to understand why it takes 20 or so queries to display a single page every time. There's so much that could be done to that... could bring it down to 3 perhaps, and perform server-side caching if you aren't already.
This could have been fixed a long time ago, but the site staff, in their infinite wisdom, decided that hardware upgrades were far more important. And, oh, look at that! You've got your fancy, shiny new hardware, and the site still runs like dick in treacle.
When I said that the better part of your effort would be spent on code upgrades, I wasn't joking or trying to piss you off. Prioritising your efforts on streamlining the site code and making that as efficient as possible, then focusing on hardware upgrades, would have been the sensible option, but as usual, flashy new server bits to make everyone gasp at was the order of the day. Now you have those parts, you're running out of excuses as to why the site's running like shit, ain'tcha?
Don't get me wrong - I appreciate the work you guys put into keeping the site up, but I don't enjoy people trying to float thin excuses in front of me when they're criticised.
Contrary to your Euclidean views, I don't enjoy criticising the staff. I would far enjoy shaking their hands and saying 'Another job well done. You guys sure do work hard to earn the respect and trust of your fanbase, you're an example to us all'. Believe me, when there's something praise-worthy to be said, you won't hear a single negative comment from me.
And, yet again, we're here. And, you may want to look a little closer to understand exactly why we're at this point, and why such a growing number of FA users are disillusioned with how the staff runs the place.
Since as far back as my earliest experiences with FA in 2006, I've watched this site swing from disaster to disaster, pretty much holding onto full functionality with the help of spit and glue. It's the modern-day equivalent of WW1 bi-plane fighters - how it stays afloat is anybody's guess. It took us three years to get SSL logins. I was around in 2007 to see the site monumentally fail, to the clench-inducing tune of $16,000 (and that's from what I recall, I forget what the actual sum is) - and fanbase bail-outs has become pretty much the standard norm. We've had to suffer the staff further wasting that money on unnecessary hardware upgrades, when the core issues could have been dealt with by stripping the code back to the bare essentials, dealing with those issues, and streamlining the code to prevent issues like those we're currently facing.
Oh, and let's not forget the constant security issues we're having to put up with, much less the Viglink debacle causing passwords and private data to be mined (which, I add, has been hastily covered up with an obscure 'opt out' function hidden pretty deeply within the Site Settings area). Let's not forget how long it took to get the Search feature back. It'd probably also be important to note that even the site staff think this site's poorly run - do some research and you'll find all the evidence you want.
We don't have Ferrox. We don't have secure code - we don't even have good code. It's taken us eight years to even make the smallest 'improvement' to the site. We, the users, paid to keep this site operational - the staff have an obligation to ensure that trust and money is properly spent. So, yes, that means they owe us something - get your head out of the sand and take a look. You'd be surprised.
So thank you to the artists who participate.
BUT IM TOO LAYTE!
It's HORRIBLE to post submissions right now. I always face timeouts. D:
1. People with helpful input.
2. Wah, I don't have 8000 watchers so I can't help.
3. Oh cool I'm a popufur (a word I wish would burn in dictionary hell) look how many watchers I have.
4. Complaining about how FA is rude and unfair, also they they're lazy, apparently. I share none o these opinions, simply stating what I've been seeing.
NO ONE ELSE BOTHER
pls kill me
Im glad to see that you guys are finally making some very much needed coding improvements, and look forward to seeing what other improvements you have planned for the near future. Thank you for working on the sites coding. I mean that sincerely.
The number of furs trying to turn this into a popularity contest is very amusing too I
Because whatever that is I dont have any of them
pff... Dream on.
The far more important question is "why should UAT testing be avoided", and there's no credible answer to that, admit it. Saving time at the cost of rolling code straight into a live environment is horrific.
Ok, let me try to explain this again in simple terms...
UAT isn't needed here because there are NO NEW USER FEATURES to test. It is simply a performance fix. Either it works, or it doesn't, and a programmer can easily test this himself/herself. Asking users to do it can only be the result of not wanting (or not knowing how) to insert test data to test with.
This is like using a sledgehammer to put a tack onto a bulletin board. Will it work? Yes, kind of. Is it an intelligent, efficient solution? No.
"Saving time at the cost of rolling code straight into a live environment is horrific"
Right, because end users are being asked here to test this in a testing environment, and insert fresh content into it.
I just hope you don't work in a for-profit corporation, because no sane project manager will solicit company employees to use their paid working hours to test things that can be tested internally. There is something called limited resources, and while requesting live users to test this performance fix is still kind of going to do the job here on FA, it would be suicide in a corporate environment.
If efficiency is your sole reason for having the position that you do, then you've failed to remember that standards for success are set by the testing manager - in this case, FA management.
I've never denied this is inefficient. It's just 'not wrong' and I see no reason to actively object to it.
Lies, that is simply not the case. FA is testing this in a live production environment (hence the 'fresh content' requirement).
'not wrong' will never = 'right'.
'standards for success are set by the testing manager'
Oh god. Not to be an ass, but you don't seem at all aware of the scope of your duties as a tester...
It's pretty nice to read...
If I had any.
LOOOOOK! :D
