Aaaa shit...$500+ car repair ;;
So awhile back I bought my first used car. Now I had a feeling there would be some things that would crop up that I'd need to pay for eventually, since after all I was buying used, but aaah just had a spooky heads-up when I went with my Mum to take the family van to the mechanic (I drove my car to follow her so we could leave the van there.)
Apparently my Honda Accord with 120,000+ miles on it has nooo signs of the timing belt every being changed. No sticker, no nothin. The belt should have been changed 2x ago, but it hasn't been. That is....sort of a big deal. :'D I'm just relieved it was looked at! ;; But its going to cost me 500+, and I'm just like fdsfda it needs to be done but...o-ouch. Money isn't exactly something I'm SECURE in.
So instead of putting my birthday monies towards a 29" flatscreen I could have for myself to play games on (because good gawd I'm tired of fighting my siblings over the only flat-screen, HD compatible tv in the house) all those monies are going to go towards this repair. Hufff.
The mechanic recommended I drive it as least often as possible, since it could 'snap/break/whateverhesaid' at any moment. WHIMPER.
Also guna have to skip out on giving christmas gifts this year...which I feel bad about but...expenses are expenses. Dx
As it stands, I just...really don't have 500 I can throw down on my car atm. I gotta take on some extra work on top of the commissions I have already accepted, so I am struggling to think of a way to do this. I would like something that wouldn't be an insane work load...but if I can't think of something that will work well beggar's can't be choosers, ya know?
I was pondering maybe christmas cats re-colors? I had this cute idea for a big cat all bundled up in a christmas present, just an overall real cute image, full-colored and with background, and offer re-colors for people for a pretty cheap cost, and a small charge for each edit that requires me to add things like hair, wings, accessories and what-not. So it would be like getting a full-color image for christmas for pretty cheap if you are a feline, or I can make somebody one! I dunno haha :'D I'm just trying to figure out sooomething. x-x My family really needs the use of my car right now...for many reasons. If you have ANY ideas please let me know!
Just...today has been a hectic day. From issues with my previous job (the stupid manager never sent me my paycheck OR terminated me from them so I'm still getting starbucks stuff in the mail, I'm really getting tired of this guy....) to trying to get my foot into an interview with other places just....hyuuuun. ;n; Pray for me guys, this is just been a bit crazy for me. xnx
I just want to get this all sorted out as soon as possible and be out of the house and on my own, but really it just feels like more things are jumpin in my path to pro-long that process.
/flop

Also, in my experience, there's always a cheaper way of fixin' your car than the garages suggest. Though of course I couldn't advise without knowing much about the area, and the issues, and the car, and all the other junk.. so, yeah. xD
Good luck!
I used to work at a shop, and all I hear about is these excessive prices. I mean, I can get a whole engine for around $700... not much more then they are asking for that timing belt swap.
-Actually first first of all I'm prayin' for ya. :> And forgive me if you know all this stuff yet or not, I'm saying it all 'cuz I'm not sure, and covering all bases.
•First of all, stop. Well, that is if you haven't changed this thing already. If you have, well all the rest will be learning experience for the next time. Still!
•This mechanic guy seems fishy. If your ride has gone 120,000 miles, it should have been changed once, not twice. Why this guy would say twice is beyond me but if he's going to toss half-truths or fibs around... why bother right? Timing belts are strange things, and their purpose and expected functions were mysterious to me also, till I learned about mine.
•Timing belts: they are made to last a very very very long time, in a very specific environment. They must not stretch, they must not crack or snap, they must not contract, get loose, get hard, get soft, get wet or oily, and even if they do they still have to do their job. They usually have to keep the valves timed to the cylinders perfectly, over several presidential administrations. XD And they must not ever slip, not even a bit.
•with the help of a friend, I changed mine. OH MY GOSH THOSE THINGS ARE SOOOO HARD TO GET TO AND ANNOYING TO CHANGE. $500 is a bit too much, but in the world of repair, you'll likely not get a better price, unless you get a
•Are you getting the timing belt tensioner and water pump replaced too? If the mechanic is questionable, then maybe he really is giving you the price to honestly change the timing belt ONLY. @_x; Which is dumb. The thinking goes that, if you're uncovering a part that's going to see the light of day only once every 8 or 10 years, you might as well change it, even if it's in great shape. This applies to water pump and belt tensioner. It's peace of mind as well as worth labor costs, if you're going to get this far down into a car, and only once a decade.
•Timing belts work great and perfectly until they fail. There is no stretching or slipping that can happen, belts are ribbed to prevent that. Perfect synchronization and timing are essential, otherwise well, pistons can hit valves, and that's irreparable destruction of an engine. :/ So really, if your car is working, enjoy it. You will not see a belt failure coming till it's failed. It's sorta like working bomb disposal: if ever you mess up, you'll never know the difference XD
I dunno what Alanator112 is saying-- you should make an effort to change your belt, tensioner (if your ride uses one and it likely does), and water pump reasonably soon. And not wild out over it, just change it reasonably soon. Also, demand from your shop that they keep *ALL* the old parts for you! They're YOUR pieces of car anyway, and (as
