Dr Phil Furry Show
"It's a journal from Summercat! And he writes:"
Hey all -
There is a Dr Phil episode that has a casting call for Furries.
I would suggest not going. And by suggest not going, I mean:
"Do not go. Do not attend. This is a seriously bad idea. Don't try to justify it. Don't try to claim you're there to balance out the crazy people; you WILL be the crazy person. I speak from experience when I was young and felt that way; and I still haven't seen the episode but I'm told it was bad."
Dr Phil, and shows like Dr Phil, thrive on controversy. They will be looking for any sort of angle to play up the weirdness of furries, and how they feel ostracized and rejected from society at large. The word 'Fursecution' will be thrown around without any sense of irony.
He's a video shock. He's looking for entertainment for the masses. He's not an investigative journalist, and this will not be a platform for attempting to redeem the Furry Fandom within the eyes of the general public.

"There are collectibles and people could kind of be interested in something. It's when you got to the role playing part with your Care Bears that I got a little wafflely on this," he says. "If you're OK with it, OK, but I'm telling you that is kind of infantile behavior and I think you might want to put them on a shelf and move on to another level of functioning."
-Dr.Phil, 'Ask Dr. Phil'
Just pisses me off so much. It's like is he getting certain types of adult babies and furries mixed up, even?
I giggled. That sort of unity of community would never happen xD
But basically, crazies gonna craze, but we ought to do our best for the less crazy to be entrapped.
The more it is given attention, the higher the chance some fuckwit who thinks they can have their fifteen minutes of fame will sign up for it.
But what good does that do for us in the end? What methods do we have to actively ensure that anyone who participates in this is made an example of? Nothing at all. So in the end it'll still happen, we'll still whinge, and nothing will get done.
I hate it. It feels so impotent.
We can't close ranks, you are correct on that. We can't even prevent Dr Phil from getting some guy in a cheap halloween costume in there pretending to be a furry.
You're right there's no mechanism of punishment, and frankly, there shouldn't be any overt methods anyhow. We're not that type of community, and I don't really want to see it that way. Instead, there's more subtle stuff. Expressing our displeasure (politely) is one of them, and not as effective as it is in similar non-internet situations, it's what we've got.
The impotence? That feeling that we can't do anything about this? That comes from one of the Furry Fandom's biggest appeals - there's no central authority that says what is or is not a furry. Despite certain people's attempts to declare it, we have no Doctrine of Furry, and unlike other similar fandoms (Anime, Brony, even Dr Who) we are deeply what I call a Non-Doctrinal culture.
Sure, it means we have no cohesion and can't react to certain things, but that also means we are flexable and adaptable. *shrug*
It's a tradeoff, and I like it that way. It just means, when Entertainment Media comes knocking for a sacrifice at the Altar of Ratings, we do our best to spread the word and hide our firstborn.
No.
Let me think about that agai-
No.
Dr Phil is an expert sensaltionalism maker and purvayer of what we in the fandom call drama. He (and people like him) will twist everything out. Trying to put a 'normal' furry up there will not work.
I've thought that in the past. I've DONE that in the past. It did not work.
Honestly, what we go through aint know different than what other sub cultures, groups, and communities of people who made choices that were considered taboo back in the day have gone through, and sooner or later, more people out there will understand. you just have to prove the truth, no matter what anyone else says.
It's being done for us.
The key bit is exposure to what actually goes on at furry cons and furry events. Interacting with people. :3
You *can* have decent media reporting on furries, and things have been changing since the 90s and early 2000s. Look at the news around Anthrocon, MFF, and Further Confusion :3
Only thing we can do is hope the creepy factor from whoever goes on these types of shows isn't that high.
Who is a creep, criminal, and banned at FC and AC. And most decidedly not welcome at a lot of places.
The key is to not get tangled up on it and make certain people don't try to go to 'redeem' furry or to 'prevent more damage'.
What episode? CSI? Remember the Chew Fox incident? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IzVCa0oOrcM
And yes, I remember Chewfox, and the aftermath that actually crashed FA.
You were saying upthread about 'we're screwed'? That was ab bad as this is going to be, and you don't even know who Chewfox is. It did earn Chewfox a lot of scorn and hate, though.
but on a serious note, it's things like this that's the reason I'm never going to try fursuiting or going to furry cons. e.e
...gods I don't even want to watch it :(
"And for one of our Furries, we got one of the most hated individuals in the fandom, with a moral character resembling moldy bread!"
"we naturally take the one who goes abotu happily spreading his HIV unto other unknowing folks in the fandom!" :D
Yeah, this is sensationalism. I hope nobody falls for it.
I'm REALLY tempted to prepare a rebuttal.
Rebuttal video it is! :D
one of those "keep that twenty foot pole handy to beat him with" type things :3
Going to have your rebuttal on stand by? :)
Besides...YOU CAN'T STOP ME MWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! *yaff-yaff-yaff-yaff*
What type of papers for what type of journal?
And if you know any sociologists with some spare time willing to think over some questions, lemme know. I"m trying to define a concept :/
I call it Imperium, the old Roman term for "Authority to act on behalf of the State", but it's imprecise.
As long as the person is happy and well balanced. He would be civil with people and get people to respect them more.
You cant have a sex crazed, emo, disrespectful, no job, no goals, lives with parents be on the show. That would look very bad. Other then that, I see no problem in it.
That's what every single show stringer has said ever since the first reports in the 1990's.
The audience will be somewhat hostile and Dr. Phil isn't going to want to interview someone who doesn't wear costumes, doesn't wear tails and ears, holds down a good job, and likes to draw fairly tame stuff and who can discuss economic policies or talk about chemical interactions (otherwise they'd interview Uncle Kage and the rest of us.)
You might be right. They were willing to do my story tho, since it had issues.
But yeah put a person where everything is fine, it might be too boring.
How will it look to prospective employers -- because they're now googling for people on the Internet and are getting good at it. How will you handle it when you're older and you've fixed your current issues, and someone digs the video up?
How will you protect yourself from whispering campaigns at work (because this does happen?)
If you're prepared for it, then do as you will. If you haven't thought about what it might do, at least stop and look at what happens to people who are in the sensational news and reflect on what might happen.
I wrote so many letters out to people. Unfortunately my aunt denied to get any help for the family when we were offered help from the show, but they have to go on as well.
We would have gotten a better lawyer supplied by the show as well as family counseling and perhaps leaving my little cousin out of the family fighting. Perhaps also a peace of mind...
So before you judge and say it was a stupid idea. You're not going through the same situation as I am.
I did what I had to do without living a regret for not trying at least. Call it a bad idea...whatever you call it...But I did what i felt was the right thing to do, which seemed the only way out. I sadly wasn't able to go on the show, since the other side of the family wasn't interested. I feel it would have been better if someone from an outside perspective where to try reasoning with them. As far as exploiting people...maybe for this furry thing their doing it...but people have to right 5 letters to get on the show and talk to 8 producers to beg for help. They don't want a jerry springer thing going on there when it involves family and children as well as blaming someone for the death of a family member.
I am not condoning for people to go on the show for this furry gig they're having. This is a separate reason why I contacted the show.
If he interviews people on thew show who hates furries then they will tell their side and it will look very bad. the he might agree with him. The show can either be series or light hearted.
I had to think about it after summer cat commented. They did a show about poly people and it went pretty well and very chill. The people were chill about it.
But if they get people from the other side that hate furries they are going to tell a very incorrect story to ruin the fandom also if they interview the wrong kind of person.
The advise remains, think very very hard about how many ways this could possibly blow up in your face
Oh this will totally go well.
I know its only for ratings, and bad publicity for furries.
Wow, I should have signed up x.x
They're not trying to be fair. They're not trying to help the fandom. They're going to be there for ratings and to show off the sick weird people.
It's a trap.
2) I'm told yes.
3) Banned from where? Here? Chewfox is banned from FA for harassment, inciting harassment, and then threatening legal action against Furaffinity.
Which is why I have the journal
but I would watch it if he were sponsored by Dr Tran's dickables.
who said that?
I have Dr. Phil's people personal numbers. I was going to go on the show for different reasons.
Not for this furry thing. It never happened tho.
I called to see what their show is about and told them how I felt about it and worried about the people they choose.
They told me NO ONE is going on yet. One girl is debating on going on, but that's it.
They want to do a show that has parents that are angry at their kids for being a furry and they want to intervene to help that person's relationship with their parents.
That's what they told me. I told them how I felt and how many people feel about it. Which is how you and summercat and how many people feel about it.
That was about two years ago when I first started the fandom. I didn't mean to get you angry, but it did hurt my feelings back then when you bashed me after we exchanged notes three weeks with each other.
Anyways its odd how I remember that.
You can read my journal on my foxy loxy page, it has the info all about how I got those numbers.
Dr. Phil isn't even a real doctor. He's a paid actor.
I'd actually be less angry if you admitted you did it for the free ride to San Fran. Would be a great vacation honestly.
*MEANWHILE IN EVERYWHERE THAT'S NOT WEST*
WOW IT SURE IS COLD
It's actually warm here at FC. I was thinking of buying some fans for sale ahead of con but was all "IT WILL BE COLD"
