Future Card Buddyfight.....a review D: (response to hype)
Hi all and first off a belated welcome to 2014, a positive year as opposed to the negative 2013
I've been busy at university, so haven't had time to do any new year journal.
With that said I decided to discuss about some new phenomenon going on--the anime Future Card Buddy Fighter.....yeah that's one mouthful of a title
I know many of my regular watches would be a bit surprised to see me review an anime, after I said about my dislike for most of the genre. But you know what, sometimes you just have to go in and look at something you might not like....sometimes it may surprise you.
Also this review is for fun
....this did not surprise me. Here's the episode if you want to watch it:
Now I had no idea what to expect going in, all I knew was that it was about some boy and a dragon. And hey, it has dragons in it, which could at least keep my attention.
We open up with some exposition dialogue. This anime is based on a card game....which isn't a very good sign. A great chunk of anime based on games and similar stuff usually tend to be mediocre such as Monster Rancher, or bad and boring like YuGiYo. The only two exceptions I have are Digimon and Pokémon. Digimon has pretty rubbish animation, but some good character development and some cool monsters. The Pokémon anime is just hilarious thanks to Team Rocket who make the series. I always laugh at their motto and the voice performances in English are funny.
The exposition dialogue man tells us that there are children's cards that link Earth to another universe and bring back monsters for children to fight with and I have to pause here. If you had the power to cross a dimension, would you really use it to bring creatures over to fight? Why not use it for something else, such as going across to the other dimension and finding out new stuff. You never know what you could find, like a cure for cancer or secrets of magic. But no, you just have to make little kids dreams of killing other things a reality.
Then we get to see two dragon in some sort of ruined ancient Greek temple. Its the stern farther scolding the rebellious son scenario, but honestly I like these characters. They're designs are good, even though the animation on them is pretty stiff....and no, I'm not going to yell "Bara kawaii!"....if anyone says that I will drag them off to my temp pyramid for some Aztec-style open heart surgery.....GOT IT?
Anyway the dad dragon tells his son that he must choose some human to be the next in line to be king. Why they are so depend on humans is a mystery, why should these dragons care about humans? Also they keep saying the word "buddy" all the time....ok friendship.
After that we get the intro song......I hate it. I don't care if I annoy people who like Jpop, but this song is annoying. I can't get into it.
Its during this song that we're introduced to the main character who has ridiculous hair. He does judo and honestly there's not much to say about him. He's hot-headed and cocky, but that's a trait seen in most other main characters in shows like this.
Also on a funny note one of the lines is "Neverending story" a move I so wish I was watching instead of this and I could just play that song over this title......oh yes......(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Vf2sDgeu7k).
Ok so afterwards we get an inappropriate image of a blue haired kid driving a police car who then leaves that car and summons a dragon via a card. I just have to ask now, what is with the cards in anime? Why are they so special? They're everywhere, with characters shoving them in your face and saying how awesome they are.
Anyway he flies up to a tall building where some other kid with a robot is. He sets up a...*sigh* "Buddy Police Barrier"....god that sounds stupid and they shout at each other.
And then they fight. In these types of anime there is a lot of fighting...a lot. Fighting, fighting, fighting, fighting. Whether it be animal cruelty in Pokémon or taking a card game way too seriously.
Now in Digimon it makes sense that there is fighting, its a dangerous world full of predators and things wanting to kill the main characters.
Here its more along the lines of Pokémon--send another living creature in to fight for entertainment. In most countries this would be considered animal cruelty. In Buddyfight its just as bad as Pokémon since you send a sentient being to fight something. That's like me picking a random commenter and telling them to fight an enormous creature D:
I don't even get battles like this. The protagonist usually just stands to the side and does nothing while something else does all the work.
Now I'd probably do something different, such as.....
What James would do here
Generic anime character (GAC for short): "I challenge you to a fight, because it is my destiny" *insert pose here and holds up a card* "Behold, the mega ultra goodie good card. This will give my pet dragon the ability to--
James: "AHHHHHHHHH!" *slices with a short but mighty Celtic sword, cutting down the GAC with ease* "Well that was easy!"
But because we don't live in that reality, the blue haired kid gets some advice from some organisation who look kind of evil and then uses a giant death hammer and the 2 opponents he faces disappear.....great kid, now you are a double murderer!
Next we see the dragon dude using some sort of crystal-bubble video at all the kids he can choose from....and note how they're all white/Japanese (they look white) and they look well off. I bring this up because it seems odd that out of all, ALL the children in the world, he picks one of these ones. You know I think there could be some poor little children in some sad parts of the world who would love a friend instead of fighting....but no he goes for some generic person.
We then meet our main character from the opening song, his name is Gao. He's a headstrong boy who wants to get a rare monster and be cool.....just like how Ash wanted to be the very best. He's a basic stock character, not much else to him. The only other thing I can say is that his mum is a judo teacher in a very stereotypical Japanese setting.
Oh and he saves some dweeby turquoise haired kid from some of the most unthreatening bullies ever.
This is an example of what I call a "sunset scene" which is common in many anime. Its usually set in a place during a sunset or late noon and usually leads to character development.....depending on what type it is.
And the dragon is grumpy because the kid uses self-defence, whilst the turquoise haired kid fanboys about how great he is and then the Gao threatens the bullies....honestly this part is a little boring.
Oh and then Gao is late for training and is punished by his mum. Of course.
The next day Gao is on an elevator smarting from yesterday and meets up with two friends, Ron Weasly and Hermione Granger.....oh wait sorry, I mean Kugaru and Baku, such memorable names.
Well Kuguaru is a bit like Hermione, smart and supportive and spouting plot points, Baku is.....there. The only thing I can say about him is that he's always got something in his mouth. On the elevator its a lollipop thing, later its ramen. Why is this? ....I have no idea. Oh and he and Gao argue and have Over the top expressions, cause that's funny ain't it? Huh huh huh!....no its really not funny.
They chat about abducted poor mythical creatures and forcing them to fight. Apparently there 3 worlds to choose from:
-dragon world
-magic world
-danger world
.....they have a world named danger world. Well that makes no sense! What is more dangerous than dragons or magic that could turn wild? Why not just have it all in one fantasy world?
Well anyway they enter a mall or something and I'm going to warn all my dragon friends out there.
The next scene has a lot of dialogue that is insulting to dragons. I'm sorry
So they go into the mall and are chatting when some blonde haired person on a second floor starts sneering at them:
Gao: "Dragons are the only way, trust me"
Blonde kid: "Hah! You like dragons huh?
Gao: Huh? Naboru? (oh great another character to remember)
Naboru: "They're ok, but dragon knights are way cooler. Dragons are nothing without their masters." (ouch!)
Gao: "What is a dragon knight?"
Kugaru: "They're humans who ride the backs of dragons and fight alongside them."
Naboru: "Dragons are just dim-witted monsters that couldn't even find their own tails without being ordered to be a dragon knight
....Jesus. This blonde is a douche! Also nevermind the fact they are in a public area and they're some distance away so would have to use raised voices. Wouldn't they get awkward stares?
Alright, so we kind of have our basic roles:
Gao= Hot headed protagonist
Kugaru= Hermione Granger
Baku= supportive weirdo
Naboru= Draco Malfoy dragon racist.
Of course the dragon dude is angry at Naboru, who wouldn't be? The guy has an annoying voice and dumb looking hair. I want to smash his face with a maccana! And worst of all Gao agrees with him!
Anyway, they go to a classroom where the teacher tells them to write essays based on Buddyfight cards and making characters from them. That's not an essay, that's a fan fiction.
Naboru Malfoy boasts about getting something good (its just a card, shut up. If you were in my school, you would have been punched in the face--Scottish schools hate show offs)
But Gao gets a glowing card, so he's special....woo! It flies away and he follows it outside via a giant slide and---WAIT A MINUTE!
That school has a giant slide? W-why couldn't my school have a giant slide?! I would have gone on it time and time again .
Well that aside, the evil cooperation headed by some creepy creep in a chair with creepy creep glasses....yuck, well he nods to send in someone to see the commotion.
Meanwhile the dragon appears in front of Gao, and he's not a happy reptile! Also Draco Naboru, not satisfied with being anti-dragon on the side-lines, joins him and starts complaining, so Gao delivers a hammy speech about effort. Yay I guess :v
Then the creepy blue haired kid arrives on his poor CGI dragon. Then a new report arrives who is pretty annoying and has crap animation. And she has the dumbest hair in this anime! It defies gravity!
I give her the Most Stupid hair award.
She yells plot exposition about who the blue haired kid, who gives Gao a Pokédex, I mean Digivice, I mean card tray thing, I mean dangerous spinning top, I mean magic box thing that does monster stuff.
There's some awkward staring scenes and "Mouth breathing scenes", which are common in anime and often creepy D:
and then the blue haired kid says:
"Ok see you later!"
But Gao being the utterly friendly person he is, challenges the blue haired weirdo to a fight.
...this is where I got a bit peeved off. This is a sell out. It shoves random action to draw audiences in. Its forced in as a cliff-hanger.
On top of that, it gives the main character a bad interpretation. It just comes across as being a bit of a selfish action. He's just met the blue haired guy and says "Fight me!", that's like punching someone you just met. And on top of that, he's just met the dragon he's sending into battle, that is just harsh! And remember this is the protagonist we have to follow.
I may be reading too much in here, but I don't care, this bugs me. So I'm trying to get it out.
And then we end on a note of creepy stares and silly dialogue and double annoyance--with more of that damned news reporter and a song on a level with Rebecca Black's Friday......GOOD SWEET MERCY! I ended the video as soon as I heard the first lyric
Overall
So in conclusion, how was this.
well....in a word.....generic. Painfully generic. The characters we have seen before and there's nothing added to them.
The animation was ok for anime, not a lot of movement and it goes over the top a lot. The dragon designs are cool, but the humans seem to be vying for who can have the dumbest looking hair, Final Fantasy you have competition!
Voice acting was passable, but the young dragon has got a pretty cool voice, its a voice I can relate to, unlike the screechiness of the Gao's
The main beef for me is of course the fact that its mindless fighting which seems to happen a lot in anime of this genre. Just the thought of transporting creatures from another world to fight for whiney kids is just as bad as the Romans capturing people for the arena.
There's no real connections yet between characters--Gao and the dragon have just met, but I think he should have some consideration. This is a being who has declared him to be your friend, are you going to just push him into the ring so suddenly? Its just wrong.
It also doesn't work as a pure fantasy. I'm not saying all fantasy should be the same, but most fantasy tend to have main themes, examples being:
-Neverending Story: humans loosing their imagination and needing to rediscover it
-The Last Unicorn: mortality and how our myths shape us
-Princess Mononoke: Humanity and nature's cycles
This along with things like Pokémon and Digimon and YuGiYo have themes of friendship.
Though in Digimon's case its genuine, in the others its pretty much forced.
So yeah, another cliché to this is the shoved in friendship theme.
This is why most of these sort of shows fail, its more product placement and more a fanfiction.
This is just the first episode, but sometimes the first episode is the most important--it sets the scene for the show. Some first episodes are great, for example An Unearthly Child, the first ever episode of Doctor Who. This Buddyfight on the other hand is a bit blasé. Maybe it will improve, but I doubt it.
So in a score I give this
2 stars out of 5
Not terrible, but not that good.
Now if you don't mind, I'm going to send anyone who comments on this into meaningless battles! >:D
Muhahaha!

ScottishFur
you'd think they'd make their aliens more weird.
It doesn't sound like it would interest me....sorry :o
at least the Vulcans and Klingons looked different.
Digimon! 8D (I liked the animation they had for the 90s, so nyah! =P )
...Dragons are nothing without their masters." {...} "Dragons are just dim-witted monsters that couldn't even find their own tails without being ordered to be a dragon knight..."
Ò._.Ó
*tailwhips Naboru into a koi pond* ^.=.^ Nyah! 0u0
and I would have pushed the guy into a lake of crocodiles myself
Nah, I'm non-death for just an insult. A little humble pie is enough.
Still the thing that drives Digimon is the characters, each having their own backstories and issues to face.
I suppose I'm a grumpy Aztec
Yes, the characters were the focal point. *glomps a Guilmon* ^^
Have a cookie...You'll feel better.
I personally loved that big yellow dinosaur with the blue stripes and horns
cookies make it better still the hair of the people look silly xD
Bad hair, a staple of Anime since Dragonball. XD At least Digimon had humans with normal hair.
and yeah I don't get what the crazy hair is all about. It doesn't really look cool, it looks itchy D:
Itchy? I would say sharp and impossible to maintain, defying physics. XD
And just imagine how much dandruff they would have D:
...super effective.
No dandruff with hair shellac like that. X3
the anime has really declined apparently
its not normal hair it looks all clogged up and sticky D:
It looks sharp and like you could bounce things off of it. X3
or you could use it to cut up vegetables
Eww...no. xP
they could be used for deadly weapons too I suppose
Impaled by a hairdo...a terrible way to go. D:
aye its a nasty way to go....which is why spikey anime hair is banned in most countries. Imagine all the trouble they'd cause :o
"Hair helmets banned if spikes are over 1.5 inches." XD
and the spikes are practically helmets now :O
Well they're card warriors so...helmets :o
How would they get those helmets onto their hair? D:
Oh and also there's ANOTHER card game anime that was released in 2011, very very similar to this. D:
The hair IS the helmet! =D
Yay. X3
And this other series is really bad...worst than BuddyFight
Eh, not a fan of any of the card produces magical creatures shows.
which is kind of meddling seeing as there is a heap tonne of them so its hard to avoid. The other show I mentioned is called Vanguard and its main crime is that its just boring.
How is it meddling if I'm disinterested in them? O.o? I have avoided them quite easily. X3
And its meddling because so many kids anime are based in them. D:
I'm also thinking of reviewing more DrWho :o
I wouldn't be able to eat that many cookies. Don't have a good stomach :o
*tempts you with a macaroon*
and no walkies here D:
its raining and cold.
It's cold here too, and windy. Definitely a day to bundle up.
and that cookie sounds cool :D
They are. ^^
I love the heat and cold :D
means I won't have to wear giant clothes D:
I'm not gonna talk to you about anime anymore... it's like you see nothing but the negative qualities of it.
So nuuuuuu!
and I don't see all negatives, but I just point out stuff---its better than saying every anime is really good, you have to sort out the bad ones from the good and say what makes them bad or good.
This one falls flat against Digimon, cause Digimon had more emotion in it and the characters interacted more and lifted it from being a Pokémon competitor to something more.
and the same can be said for that other recent anime that's giant now--Attack on Titan. The ending is weak, but the rest is pretty strong....if a bit talky
This all stemmed from when I saw this fanart (http://www.furaffinity.net/view/12424152/) and I got interested and thought:
"You know what maybe I'll make a journal about my viewing as I watch and see if I can make any humour out of it"
and I do see positives in this, the animation is vibrant and colourful and I like the dragons who seem to be nicer compared to the humans intent on taking them and forcing the to fight. Plus they have giant aquariums in a mall and a giant slide.....GIANT SLIDE! I want a giant slide
So I am sorry if it looks like I'm kicking this to the ground, I really am not. I'm just looking at it and giving my opinions. So don't you worry Mr Konana
In fact you have to be critical with everything, even stuff you like, e.g. There are some real DrWho episodes I despise and as a much as I love the first Neverending Story movie, it doesn't convey the whole message of the book and so on.
I may look at this again when more episodes come out though
You should speak about these sort of things and discuss other's opinions.
What do you think of this anime then?
So yeah, an anime that not only is super-generic, but also manages to insult one of the most beloved creatures from outside anime. Wow, that's bad, even by their standards. Honestly, it's the series like these that try to take suspension of disbelief too far and end up being really crappy exercises in seeing how much of the show some will watch before they are annoyed by it. I really don't see why you bother with new anime James, there has been no change in the template for the industry since the late 90's so any original ideas have pretty much been used up by now. As for your comment on Yu-Gi-Oh! With shows like that you have to remember that the show was made not to be an actual entertaining cartoon with a storyline, but rather a strategy study guide for players of the accompanying card game series. That is the state of that show, as it is with Digimon, with Pokémon, with Bakugan Battle Brawlers, with B-Daman Crossfire and SOO many others. All they really prove is that watching a half-hour long commercial is no fun.
also I though it would be a good opportunity to discuss the clichés and tropes
And honestly this isn't as bad as say Yu-Gh-Oh YugiYo or whatever is named just blabs about friendship a lot....a lot a lot D:
Here's the thing, you need to SHOW friendship or connections not TELL us. Digimon at least had the kids interacting--they were friendly they could get angry at each other they could have revelations, etc. That for me is what made Digimon
so honestly...this review was made for fun like all other reviews I do
anyway, time to send my friends to fight stuff >:D
You go attack that big killer dragon, I'll stay on the side lines and YELL A LOT!
Part of it is the fact that we've all aged out of shonen for the most part...but it would be nice to see more effort put into consequences and characterization. You can run a setting on nonsensoleum and handwavium as long as you write characters that act like real people, more or less.
And for future kids, I suppose they might like this, but a you think its good for them?
No, I don't think so, but this franchise looks like it won't last more than a season.
I think it'll probably die off soon too D:
In fact....why don't they do that? D:
I'm also kind of working on a fantasy thing too, not based on any cards--but also has a young protagonist. Except instead of being a loudmouth, he's small, shy and very vulnerable.
"...Sir?"
"You're too young to know about that, wyrmling. Think about how many brash, hot-blooded young wyrms can live in a limited amount of space...or older ones, for that matter."
"...b-but sir?"
"Some of them make it...but I don't think he will. He's uncautious and conceited, just like his hot-blooded idiot of a Spotter."
plus you never know of the creatures die. There's a second episode where a few dragons are summoned and then attacked and are gone.....but where do they go?
I wonder if this would also be a good way of waging a proxy war...
There's a demon giving dance lessons in such a girly way....eesh!
Believe it or not there was a bit of hype concerning just the dragon character on FA. And that was the hype I was mentioning. They were just going bonkers because:
"ERM MAH GAD, HE'SH SO HAWT!"
I can't stand people who just judge something by appearance....especially weeaboos (oooh I hate them). Its as bad as what they do to Pokémon or Digimon characters. Mindless lust.
And honestly, the fact it is for kids is bad. Its just kind of brainless and doesn't teach them anything or has any thought or heart or anything.
It falls flat to many other kids media such as Disney. Kids aren't dumb and we shouldn't treat them as stupid.
So ....yeah, I still stand by this was done for fun. I had fun doing this and these are my honest thoughts.
But...I dunno, there's so much else they could do. Again, kids aren't dumb. I questioned Pokémon when I was young and thought it was cruelty to animals. So why don't they take risks? Disney took risks with Hunchback of Notre Dame and scary scenes with other movies and Don Bluth tugged at heartstrings with Land Before Time and awed with Secret of NIMH.
So why can't they try? Give up the constant dialogue and jargon and crazy hair and be purely on emotions.
As you can see....I'm a stubborn old goat
Though the fact it is advertisement is still bad---it has a hollow goal there. And the fact it has tonnes of rather dully designed humans (what is it with the hair) who are very bland. Its not as fun and exciting like Redwall or fun like Animaniacs, or how dark and complex and smart Gargoyles was, its just.....bleh. Its like Yu-gi-Oh and Pokémon smashed together and they were pretty shallow shows.
I think they could (and really should) try something new--like a different prospectus. And entertainment wise....this is boring. The fight is boring and the two main characters aren't very friendly, which is odd in something called Buddyfight.
And Disney is just in a slump now, like it was in the 70's and 80's...there will be another Little Mermaid or Beauty and the Beast to bring it up again They just need to find more folk law or fairy tales to adapt.
Plus I hope Ghibli's films will be good now too.
Again....my opinions....that's what I'm trying to say x_X
The Secret of Kells is a children's movie, but practices with Medieval Irish styles for example which hasn't been done before.
Also this review is for fun'
I understand that sentiment myself... I had looked into a few things that I really dislike with the express purpose of seeing what is all the fuss!
'....this did not surprise me. Here's the episode if you want to watch it:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2OO1-MXCLhE)'
At least you used the official channel...
'Now I had no idea what to expect going in, all I knew was that it was about some boy and a dragon. And hey, it has dragons in it, which could at least keep my attention.'
Eeyup. ...me, too.
'The exposition dialogue man tells us that there are children's cards that link Earth to another universe and bring back monsters for children to fight with and I have to pause here. If you had the power to cross a dimension, would you really use it to bring creatures over to fight? Why not use it for something else, such as going across to the other dimension and finding out new stuff. You never know what you could find, like a cure for cancer or secrets of magic. But no, you just have to make little kids dreams of killing other things a reality.'
...the fact that I am surprised that they do not take that direction is readon why they do not, either: we are very set in their ways.
'and no, I'm not going to yell "Bara kawaii!"'
...that is not even correct Nipponese.
'....if anyone says that I will drag them off to my temp pyramid for some Aztec-style open heart surgery.....GOT IT?'
!
...
I just remembered a comic that started with an 'Aztec-style open heart surgery'...
'Anyway the dad dragon tells his son that he must choose some human to be the next in line to be king. Why they are so depend on humans is a mystery, why should these dragons care about humans?'
......
'Also they keep saying the word "buddy" all the time....ok friendship.'
...the Nipponese version of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic?
'Also on a funny note one of the lines is "Neverending story" a move I so wish I was watching instead of this and I could just play that song over this title......oh yes......(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Vf2sDgeu7k).'
Upupupu...
'I just have to ask now, what is with the cards in anime? Why are they so special? They're everywhere, with characters shoving them in your face and saying how awesome they are.'
I think that cards are a big thing in (true and honest) Nipponese culture. They have Hanahuda ('Hanafuda') cards and Karuta cards in older culture. In more modern culture, telephone cards are decorated with such elaborate art; they are even kept after use!
'Anyway he flies up to a tall building where some other kid with a robot is. He sets up a...*sigh* "Buddy Police Barrier"'
—girl look at that body.
'And then they fight. In these types of anime there is a lot of fighting...a lot. Fighting, fighting, fighting, fighting. Whether it be animal cruelty in Pokémon or taking a card game way too seriously.'
Fighting makes instant conflict with a clear goal. In fact, most plots revolve around conflict (not necessarily fighting itself).
'Here its more along the lines of Pokémon--send another living creature in to fight for entertainment. In most countries this would be considered animal cruelty.'
...not unless you use chickens/roosters. Then, this is called 'cockfighting' (or "pelea de gallos" in Puerto Rico)...
...not that I approved of that.
'That's like me picking a random commenter and telling them to fight an enormous creature D:'
Honestly, I think that a few would like that... but that is just me playing with an idea of yours.
'I don't even get battles like this. The protagonist usually just stands to the side and does nothing while something else does all the work.'
I also found that odd...
'Now I'd probably do something different, such as.....
What James would do here
Generic anime character (GAC for short): "I challenge you to a fight, because it is my destiny" *insert pose here and holds up a card* "Behold, the mega ultra goodie good card. This will give my pet dragon the ability to--
James: "AHHHHHHHHH!" *slices with a short but mighty Celtic sword, cutting down the GAC with ease* "Well that was easy!"'
I am reminded of Pokemon Trading Card Game 2: Great Rocket Attacks! Essentially, the game has a bad guy team that traps (and even hypnotises) club members. THe way to defeat the team is... defeating them in a card game.
Wat.
...even physical violence makes more sense here! Then again, this is an electronic game, hence the gameplay goes first...
'But because we don't live in that reality, the blue haired kid gets some advice from some organisation who look kind of evil and then uses a giant death hammer and the 2 opponents he faces disappear.....great kid, now you are a double murderer!'
...murder??
'Next we see the dragon dude using some sort of crystal-bubble video at all the kids he can choose from....and note how they're all white/Japanese (they look white) and they look well off. I bring this up because it seems odd that out of all, ALL the children in the world, he picks one of these ones. You know I think there could be some poor little children in some sad parts of the world who would love a friend instead of fighting....but no he goes for some generic person.'
why
'We then meet our main character from the opening song, his name is Gao. He's a headstrong boy who wants to get a rare monster and be cool.....just like how Ash wanted to be the very best. He's a basic stock character, not much else to him. The only other thing I can say is that his mum is a judo teacher in a very stereotypical Japanese setting.'
...I find ironic that the Nipponese want to keep with Nipponese stereotypes.
'The next day Gao is on an elevator smarting from yesterday and meets up with two friends, Ron Weasly and Hermione Granger.....oh wait sorry, I mean Kugaru and Baku, such memorable names.'
This programme is Nipponese, hence the names are to be memorable to the Nipponese. Either way, the Harry Potter twist you put in there is interesting.
...then again, if we are going to follow the Harry Potter naoming potential, then why not call Gao 'Harry'... or at least 'Ebony'? They are the protagonists of their stories...
'They chat about abducted poor mythical creatures and forcing them to fight. Apparently there 3 worlds to choose from:
-dragon world
-magic world
-danger world
.....they have a world named danger world. Well that makes no sense! What is more dangerous than dragons or magic that could turn wild? Why not just have it all in one fantasy world?'
My idea is that Danger World was explicitly made to have danger. Dragons have that cool appeal, or again, are their own living beings. Magic has tons of potential.
'Gao: "Dragons are the only way, trust me"
Blonde kid: "Hah!
Naboru: "Dragons are just dim-witted monsters that couldn't even find their own tails without being ordered to be a dragon knight'
...
*looks at tail* /has a dragon character/
...wait, does that not make Naboru...
'Alright, so we kind of have our basic roles:
Gao= Hot headed protagonist
Kugaru= Hermione Granger
Baku= supportive weirdo
Naboru= Draco Malfoy dragon racist.'
...Draco?
'Of course the dragon dude is angry at Naboru, who wouldn't be? The guy has an annoying voice and dumb looking hair. I want to smash his face with a maccana! And worst of all Gao agrees with him!'
Haime?? I am surprised that Gao/Harry/Ebony agrees with Draco, especially given the theme of the programme!
'Anyway, they go to a classroom where the teacher tells them to write essays based on Buddyfight cards and making characters from them. That's not an essay, that's a fan fiction.'
...ew.
'Naboru Malfoy boasts about getting something good (its just a card, shut up. If you were in my school, you would have been punched in the face--Scottish schools hate show offs)'
I would have benefitted from a Scottish School, then. In the schools in Puerto Rico, they are quite a bit of showoffs.
...yes; I am Puerto Rican.
'That school has a giant slide? W-why couldn't my school have a giant slide?! I would have gone on it time and time again.'
...there is a Puerto Rican school or two with a giant slide! What are we doing here??
'Meanwhile the dragon appears in front of Gao, and he's not a happy reptile! Also Draco Naboru, not satisfied with being anti-dragon on the side-lines, joins him and starts complaining, so Gao delivers a hammy speech about effort. Yay I guess :v'
My reaction to Gao/Harry/Ebony: http://www.furaffinity.net/view/6512895/
'I give her the Most Stupid hair award.'
Upupupu... that should be an actual parodic award!
'She yells plot exposition about who the blue haired kid, who gives Gao a Pokédex, I mean Digivice, I mean card tray thing, I mean dangerous spinning top, I mean magic box thing that does monster stuff.'
Frankly, I never noticed this redundancy...
'and then the blue haired kid says:
"Ok see you later!"
But Gao being the utterly friendly person he is, challenges the blue haired weirdo to a fight.'
...now if only there is a place to hide from overly affectionate generic cartoon-fighters.
'I may be reading too much in here, but I don't care, this bugs me. So I'm trying to get it out.'
...nah; you are doing just fine.
'The main beef for me is of course the fact that its mindless fighting which seems to happen a lot in anime of this genre. Just the thought of transporting creatures from another world to fight for whiney kids is just as bad as the Romans capturing people for the arena.'
I thank the perspective here. You seem to be awake from the norm. /NOT sarcasm/
'There's no real connections yet between characters--Gao and the dragon have just met, but I think he should have some consideration. This is a being who has declared him to be your friend, are you going to just push him into the ring so suddenly? Its just wrong.'
Also... a being that imediately declares you to be his friend... that is going way too far too fast! I would look for a place where I could hide from overly affectionate otherworldly dragons!
'It also doesn't work as a pure fantasy. I'm not saying all fantasy should be the same, but most fantasy tend to have main themes, examples being:
-Neverending Story: humans loosing their imagination and needing to rediscover it
-The Last Unicorn: mortality and how our myths shape us
-Princess Mononoke: Humanity and nature's cycles'
I guess we need more Neverending Stpry, then? /NOT sarcasm/
Even so, I think we need more real world themes. There is a lot going around outside, thus there is a lot of opportunities of stories still.
'This is just the first episode, but sometimes the first episode is the most important--it sets the scene for the show. Some first episodes are great, for example An Unearthly Child, the first ever episode of Doctor Who. This Buddyfight on the other hand is a bit blasé. Maybe it will improve, but I doubt it.'
Frankly, given how poor this episode was, I was hoping that they would do something anlong those sides. In fact, I was hoping that they did this on purpose. I mean, one or two Nipponese cartoons started an innocent cartoon that would be great to children... but, later on, turned horrific with stuff that would make adults wince!
The idea is... if Nipponese cartoons can do a bait-and-switch regarding 1st episodes in those series, then why not here... to a better effect? I am not saying that the programme should go all intense. Rather, expand on
'Now if you don't mind, I'm going to send anyone who comments on this into meaningless battles! >:D
Muhahaha!'
I am ready at your word! I have moon power!
and yes I love Neverending Story. Its such a unique movie :O
though I think a lot of anime could learn from outside sources (Neverending Story being German).....trouble is Japan is still pretty xenophobic in some places.
After all most Japanese people are genetically the same to Koreans
Frankly, most of this article is me agreeing and being oddly surprised at a lot of stuff that you are saying. Why cross dimensions with the purpose of realizing destructive fantasies instead of constructive or explorative ones? Why not bring the 'buddies' to children in despair who atually need buddies, especially strong buddies?
At least I can explain the appeal of cards. Ranging from the older Hanahuda ('Hanafuda') and Karuta cards to the newer elaboratively-decorated collectible telephone cards, cards themselves seem to be a huge part of Nipponese culture. (Then again, generic people fighting using cards... even physical violence makes morse sense in these situations!)
Some other things can be explained quite easily. The emphasis on fighting makes instant conflict with a clear resolution. The 'Danger World' would be a world made explicitly with the purpose of being dangerous, opposed to Dragon World (where there are sentient beings along with the 'cool factor') and Magic World (where magic has tons of possibilities. The odd names are because they are oriented towards a Nipponese audience.
However, I am confused why the protagonist (Gao, though I propose 'Harry' or even 'Ebony' in tune with the nicknaming scheme.) agrees with Draco... There is a better way to advertise the relationship between dragons and humans. Or again, why people are made to write fanfiction in class? Why do dragons needs humans in the 1st place? Why reinfcorce Nipponese stereotypes? Why is Gao/Harr/Ebony so creel?
The one redeeming factor is that they might have been purposefully be making a generic 1st episode that draws in people who are confortable with the familiar (or are scared of investing into something radically new), only to utterly destroy all those expectations to the better. Have the dragons research why they need humans and have them separate from the human in the dragons' search to knowledge. Have others discover the potential of crossing dimensions, waking up and even inspiring the audience on what they can do! Expose how harmful the tendencies of those generic Nipponese children could be! Make 'Danger World' a world where the visceral feelings are brought to ruin! In fact, you can keep the friendship theme; just follow Altallo's lead on befriending those children in despair who want a friend! The only requirement is to make the programme radically different from the 1st episode!
sorry I got really confused with your first comment....was very long D:
A constructive fantasy would be so much more engaging than just another Pokémon excuse. Its like giving a spoilt kid a big huge plush toy and they tear it apart...whilst a poor starving kid looks on. Of course the poor down trodden kid getting something great might be similar to say Aladdin, a poor boy gets a powerful genie...but probably different, since a genie and a dragon are two different things
I think the writers of the series aren't that great. They made another anime promoting another card game called Vanguard. The characters in that aren't too brilliant either. It seems their whole lives revolve around some sordid card game. One of the characters lost her parents who were going to teach her the card
game and she mopes but then she gets better due to the power of cards and blah....eh.
Of course Vanguard came out before Buddyfight....I guess in Buddyfight they wanted to ramp up the animation with a mix of 3D and 2D. So honestly I think they don't really care about what goes on in their story or how to tell it better, they just want to show off cards and say "This is awesome, buy this now!"
After seeing the other episodes....its gotten a bit meh. They introduced a villain who wants to steal all the cards, *cough* Team Rocket wanting to steal all the Pokémon *cough*
That all said this whole series has, in part, got me inspired to write a fantasy story of my own which is sort of similar--except with a human character, a Greek slave in a Roman villa (different setting to highschools in Japan) going into a world of myth and legend and facing an unexpected villain :o
I also think your idea of Danger world is quite inspired and interesting
I got a similar idea. However, that would be deconstructing the cartoon. The 1st episode would be canon, but the rest of my series would be breaking down the whole concept, making things better.
However, typing this...
...
...I should probably make up my own series, making a Cliché Storm (with a few good-looking characters, just in case) in the 1st chapter then break everything in the rest of the series. After all, I am essentially making up everything except from the 1st chapter; why not make the 1st chapter itself? Also, given that the 1st chapter is supposed to be a Cliché Storm, the 1st chapter would be easy!
...which Danger World idea?
'The 'Danger World' would be a world made explicitly with the purpose of being dangerous[.]'
'Make 'Danger World' a world where the visceral feelings are brought to ruin!'
