Hey everyone!
Just wanted to quickly mention that in the upcoming issue of "Bust" magazine (a feminist/ women's magazine), there's an article about furries from the perspective of female furries called "Venus in Fur".
I've already received a copy of the magazine because I provided an interview and data for the issue. Having read the article in its entirety, I can say that it is FANTASTIC. It is one of the best treatments of furries in popular media that I have ever seen. While it's not 100% accurate on everything in the fandom (let's face it, that's next to impossible for a non-furry), it does a phenomenal job introducing furries, explaining the culture, and getting into the real-life experience of several well-adjusted furries. It maturely addresses the issue of sex in the fandom without focusing on it, and it includes tons of data and information about furries: the article is 5 pages long (which means it has actual SUBSTANCE), and is intelligently written, not sensationalist!
I would HIGHLY recommend picking up a copy of the magazine when it hits shelves or checking out the article when/if it becomes available on the Bust website. And, if you really like the article, I'd say to give a shout out to its author, Johanna Gohmann, who went above-and-beyond to make sure this was a positive, accurate representation of furries! =^_^=

As I see articles like this pop up from time to time, there's one aspect I find myself wishing was communicated more. I don't tend to see much that specifically mentions that people interviewed typically function just fine in "normal" settings, and that they're just as successful as the rest of the public, not any more sexually devious, and other similar things. Just to, you know, you push the point that hey, all these people are fully functionally human beings - at least just as much as the next random person~ I see it hinted at, but never really specifically mentioned, and I do feel things like that make big steps to ending some of the aversion or hesitation folks often react with.
Of course, that wasn't the point of this article. Just something I've noticed. The article itself is fantastic, just as you say - definitely going to have to go give a poke to its author! The culture analysis, and the whole thing about camaraderie - that made me very happy to see. I'm also extra glad that when they talked about the sexual aspect, those interviewed didn't give the impression that it's only for the "bad" furries and all the good ones don't partake at all, as I've seen that mentioned before. Seeing them mention and acknowledge it, then move on to keep talking about other, more common aspects across the community as a whole, was quite nice.
Great read, thank you again!
Can't disagree with the main thrust of the article, though. (Certainly, fending off advances from the tactless and sneers of jerky fag-bois constantly can't be easy or particularly rewarding.)
