Future Card Buddyfight a review part 2--the other episodes
11 years ago
Welcome my friends to another part of this epic review duel review.
For part 1 see here (http://www.furaffinity.net/journal/5401210/)
Last time we had awesome dragon designs coupled together with Yu-gi-Oh like plot, a Judo practicing protagonist, irresponsible parenting and possible murder of mythical creatures.
Can the next 3 episodes bring anything positive to this series? The answer is......meh, no.
Let's begin:
I'm going to just speed through this review and add anything funny where I can find anything
So last time dear old Gao challenged some blue haired kid after meeting his dragon slave, I mean friend.
Well Gao is trying to assemble a card deck, did I mention this has magic cards? I did? Ok.
Well anyway the dragon, is sitting nearby, Drum, when the Hermione Granger like Kugaru sidles up and tells him he should be smaller.
"Every monster from an alien world knows they have to change their appearance so they don't scare humans while on earth." (oh that's nice calling him a monster).
Drum: "You're just trying to create plush toys of me aren't you?"
Kugaru: "Yeah pretty much and making it easier for the animators to draw you."
So Drum turns into a smaller version of himself which kind of looks very Digimon like or Pokémon like.......and you could get plushies that size D:
Though I don't know why people say he's terrifying, he's cool! He's big and strong, who wouldn't love a big dragon friend?
but anyway, Goa hasn't prepared for the fight, so why did he challenge the blue kid? Because he's an impulsive jerk, that's why!
Luckily his friend Ron Weasly I mean Baku is there to help via Japanese food and snarky behaviour...which makes Drum like him for some reason. After some bad jokes and speed lines, the deck is made and the battle begins!
So apparently this school has a huge arena to hold fights. Kind of like a Roman arena, only without gladiators.
The two players eye each other up whilst the annoying pink haired lady in the flying saucer acts as commentator.
Pink haired lady: "Look at the intensity in his eyes, oh those eyes are so dreamy! We love you Tesuku!"
Sheesh Lady you're talking about a young kid here!
After a couple more poor jokes and a Team Rocket style speech and the battle starts!
And.....Its so boring!
I am not kidding, its just statistics and rules. Its not fun!
Playing a game is fun, watching someone play a game can be fun too....watching a set of bland fictional characters play a game while spewing out rules is not fun.
Its like they took the instruction manual and just animated that. Hermione Granger, er, Kugaru spouts exposition.
Also the animation. The mix smooth looking 3D animation with the stiff 2D animation of the characters typical of anime. This is really jarring, you should never mix 3D with 2D unless if you're absolutely sure they're top notch, example being the ballroom scene in Beauty and the Beast.
Well anyway, to save time--Gao wins, he and the Blue haired kid exchange cards....and end. No connection with Drum and Gao established.
End of pointless episode 2
Episode 3 begins in Gao's home where....oh god.
A demon teaching hip hop? Why? Why Japan? Oh and what on Earth is he wearing?!
more unfunny jokes ensue surrounding food and then its off to school for Gao and his sister. They meet Naburo on the way who is a snarky jerk some more.....if I was in Gao's place I'd smash him on the head and drag him off to the temple pyramid, but that's just me.
Apparently there is a whole class devoted to the subject of this sordid card fight.....no maths or languages or history or science, no nothing useful like that!
So our protagonists go to the class, but Drum is left outside by the crazy glasses professor
"Monsters aren't allowed!"
More racism!
Inside the classroom Gao notices something odd--some banana shaped hair.
This is another character....I can't remember his name despite rewatching this episode a couple of hours ago o_O. As soon as he appears an annoying music track of what sounds like the Harlem Shake starts D:
This guy is annoying and has an annoying voice and has lame dancing D: He starts dancing with the professor and the whole class cheers via flashing coloured lines
All of a sudden Gao wants this guy to be his tutor.....despite the fact he's never met this person and is told that he is not a fighter. The other guy agrees though.....too easily D:
So anyway another fight....joy.
Oh and the other kid has a "Magic world" army
Kugaru: "They're creatures are weaker, but they're magic is strong."
That's a bit of a mixed message there Kugaru. That's like saying, that lady is short but her high heels make her tall. Be more specific.
oh and the demon that teaches dancing is the banana kid's friend and more a friend that Gao and Drum.
So the fight begins and.....wait the banana kid just summon a kangaroo in a leather jacket with a guitar? Weird....but kind of cool.
The demon guy takes to the battle arena and wrestles a dragon that turns into red fireworks.....I just have to ask, what DOES happen to these creatures when they're beaten? Do they die? D:
well anyway the non-moving statue crowd cheer on to save animation costs as another dragon is brutally destroyed....charming.
Naburo the blonde is a jerk some more....and his voice sounds like a woman's. Drum takes to the battlefield and then Gao wins.....I know I'm probably skipping ahead but he uses a death hammer thing and wins.
Now if I were in the arena the battle would be over in 2 seconds.
Banana kid: "Yo yo yo, chicci chicci-"
*insert flying spear here hitting him in squarely in the chest*
Banana kid: "a-brrruk! Urk! Gargle!"
*crowd gasps*
Kugaru: "OMG! What world was that from?!"
James: "Ahahahah! Victory is mine!"
Oh but that wouldn't happen with Gao. He, banana kid and the demon make friends......and abuses Drum :o
Bye bye episode 3.....onto No.4 now.
Last episode I'm going to talk about now
Ok this one begins with Gao arguing with Drum...and Drum leaving. Good call Drum!
After the intro we see Gao's class getting a new student....the turquoise kid from episode one. Of course this kid sees Gao and begins fanboying in front of the whole class, including a snarky blonde idiot next to him. like you do! And they reuse some animation.
Meanwhile Drum grumbles....you know you could go back to being huge and just go find another human, someone nice and with better hairstyle :p
Later on Gao and the Turquoise hair kid go to a card shop and come across the shop owner and his giant robot slave.....who is a demon.....when he's so clearly a toy robot.
He explains the rules and.....yeah this is pretty much a giant tutorial. Again its like if someone took the manual and just based an animated series around it. Its basically a commercial
So the turquoise kid and the shop manager, who is wearing a ridiculous costume, battle in a giant castle in an aquarium....what? And then it goes from the mall to a green hall thing.....WHY? You going to explain this? No? OK!
The turquoise kid has Danger World (that's still a stupid name) army which includes ogres (no Shrek), an uncool Minotaur and other dragons.....that the dragon world doesn't have.......ok. More like half-a-dragon world.
So more tutorial stuff happens and then something that got on my nerves occurred.
The turquoise kid and an ogre attack a poor dragon and there is blood.....yes blood. This poor creature has felt pain or worst has died from its injuries....that is sick and cruel D: just as cruel as attacking some poor Pokémon or a defenceless animal :o
Well more fighting ensues and then some weird silver haired looking man with a parrot arrives and starts sneering at them and saying winning is the only thing that matters....he's so obviously evil that all he needs is to laugh evilly, talk about darkness and give evil monologues. He's got one right.
Oh and I probably should mention this, in the crowd are cameos of characters from another anime called Vanguard and only one, a pink haired girl, speaks. What's Vanguard about? Card fighting....and its owned by the same company......Shameless advertisement! Oh but don't worry, we may get to that stinker some time soon
Oh and then the bullies from episode one arrive, one says Forever Alone (Did he just quote a meme?!) and Gao beats them up with Drum....why couldn't he let Drum burn them?
The bullies vow revenge
"Next time Gadget, NEXT TIME!"
But anyway Drum and Gao argue about food and everything is fine.....OR IS IT?
At night we see the obviously evil gut talk to an obviously evil....woman?...boy? I don't know, androgynous thing about some photon metal thing in a mine Mt. Fuji.
He transforms into a wilder version of himself and uses a "Dark" set of cards and disaster force and rides off into the moonlight with a Cerberus.....EVIL!
And that's the end.
Verdict? Yes please
there's no hiding the fact that this is a commercial.
As my good friend
skunkbybirth said "All they really prove is that watching a half-hour long commercial is no fun."
The characters are rather dull thus far and I get the suspicion that they most likely won't be developed further.
Some cool looking dragons can't lift this series up from just being meh. Plus its another questionable in morality a bit like Pokémon.
Additionally this is supposedly set in the future and it ranks as one of the silliest looking futures I've seen. Why not break out the skin tight spacesuits, goldfish helmets and shoulder pads while your at it?
Little of the world is explained and just makes the whole thing more confusing.
In the end though its not saying any bad morals to kids or anything like that, its just very boring and nothing new, which is a real pity because they could have really broken the mould and done something new.....but no, it had to be the samey same.
My score still stands at 2 stars out of 5
Not terrible.....but a real bland series.

ScottishFur
the dragon is cool though.
In fact this anime has an uncool minotaur....which is insulting D:
and yeah I can understand the nostalgia for Space operas. I loved on called Ulysess 31
also be sure to read part 1 of the review--where there are slightly more dragons :)
Another good old show, but this is going waaaaaaayy back, is "Galaxy Express 999" and it's sequel "Adieu! Galaxy Express 999"
and I have heard of those somewhere D:
also, as a dragon I would like to ask you here. In one episode, a dragon is stabbed and there is blood....and its green blood. Are dragons Vulcans? :o
But that poor dragon D:
I dunno I'd never send a real dragon to battle.
If that were true, would make for a less boring show.
already got a trust weapon
As for the dragon "Drum" staying with the moronic main character, remember, the main character is OBVIOUSLY magical or the subject of a prophesy or something overused like that, thus forcing the semi decent character to honor and respect a really stupid main character.
*sigh* seems like they're going to pull something like that out. Especially what with the villain at the end who is clearly evil.
Just hope Drum becomes more a character unto himself :o
*sigh* wish they had more than just card shows. In fact there is an old anime of the 70's that's an adaptation of Anne of Green Gables and that was cool D:
they're going through the 80s commercial shows period I think :o
I'm not sure whether or not to look at any other future episodes coming out though.
also with Vanguard I'm probably just going to do a brief review, cause there's over 100 episodes out now D:
If you feel like seeing the characters you care about move through their extremely contrived adventure, then go ahead! If you feel genuinely repulsed by the poor writing, obscure plot and flat characters then go find something better to watch.
in fact its given me an idea for a pair of new writing projects
they made a minotaur uncool
"Here catch this"
Still would have thrown a spear at the evil silver haired guy when I first saw him. Silver haired people are evil *nod nod*
If not, then there's no hope for it... D:
that show goes nowhere.
I think these new anime coming out are a bit repetitive, the old ideas are draining away :o
the villain doesn't help either, he's neither funny or threatening D:
...maybe the next season then?
...
...nah.
On the episodes themselves....
Episode 2
I think, ever since Pocket Monsters became popular, the term 'monster' had been destigmatised.... though not perfectly, since I can see a lot of people freaking out about a giant monster. I, myself, would like giant monsters, but...
Me: *plays games or whatever*
Dragon: *suddenly appears* 'I am your friend now! Huuuuug!'
Me: '...no touchies!' *runs*
The fight being just a tutorial battle made sense, given how this is a commercial, hence knowledge on how to play the game is essential. Even so, given how the tutorial is the point of this episode, why should a connection between Harry Way* and Drum be established?
* = Harry Potter + Ebony Way = Harry Way, my nickname to Gao
§
Episode 3
'A demon teaching hip hop?'
My reaction: http://www.furaffinity.net/view/8280891/
'kangaroo in a leather jacket with a guitar? Weird....but kind of cool.'
My reaction: 'Wait; what?'
*checks*
http://www.trilulilu.ro/video-anima.....the-weird-mime (Skip to 6:00 of that video.)
'I do not like him! He is not cool, but complicated and... yuck!'
Back to the episode itself, I find odd but expected that they would teach a class about this thing. I mean, they were already told to write fanfiction! Pretty soon, there shall be Buddyfight Academy*! If that happens, I am going to set fire to that Buddyfight Academy!
The stuff that Hermione made sense: I think she meant to say 'Magic monsters have strong magical strength but weak physical strength.'
Also, my guess is that defeated monsters just disappear from the ring.
* = ...based on the Duel Academy in Yu-Gi-Oh! GX. I would set fire to that Duel Academy, too.
§
Episode 4
'an uncool Minotaur'
My reaction: 'Actually, he is quite good-looking to me!'
'rides off into the moonlight with a Cerberus.....EVIL'
My reaction: *sees the design of the cerberus and its animation*
'Ew.'
Back to the episode itself, people tend to stick with abusive relationships because of how manipulative abusers are, though I think that, in this case, Drum carries some fault, Drum having a 'you've got a friend in me that's never going to quit' mentality.
'The turquoise kid and an ogre attack a poor dragon and there is blood.....yes blood. This poor creature has felt pain or worst has died from its injuries....that is sick and cruel D:'
...really? What about the part where the dragon literally sliced the ogre? *twitch*
Frankly, I think the 'Forever Alone' thing is mereley coincidental.
and, I suppose she is right, but if Hermione had said "They're physically weak" it would have been clearer. Plus I suppose I have gotten used to anime dub transitions on shows such as this to be....not that brilliant.
I know nothing about Yu-Gi-oh except for the character having 3 hair colours all at the same time and has a happy side that blabs about friendship and an emo angry side....and everyone has silly looking hair D:
With the minotaur I think it was too... well, too over blown. Simplistic designs can be the best.
Well with ogre and dragon, both are pretty gruesome now I think of it
and in the latest episode he says Forever Alone again and says noob also...mmm. Child of the internet.
Frankly, I do not think that you are missing anything rreally, other than a few good-looking monster designs. I do not consider myself a fan of Yu-Gi-Oh!, myself!
...hence why I wish the kangaroo's design would be simplified. The minotaur's was fine to me (probably due to the cohesion of its design); the kangaroo's seemed to be a mess of 'how do we make this kangaroo the most "cool" possible?' without any idea of harmony.
...I think you are right about the Internet thing here.
Frankly, I think that I find your reviews far more enjoyable than the series itself! I wonder if you are going to continue this series.
I think that's an issue of some anime and stuff, it tries so hard to make characters look cool with complex designs, when in fact they're just kind of messy. There's one character in a PS2 game that has a crazy hair style that makes his head look unreal D:
Honestly its why I love something like say Journey, which has very simple designs.
I might do.....though I'm thinking of doing something else
By the way, what is your real opinion on the Harry Potter series? You keep mentioning the characters in your reviews.
...yes; My Immortal is that bad.
honestly Buddfight when you get down to it isn't terrible, its not saying bad things to children, unlike say that horrible Garbage Pail Kids movie....its just bland.
and there's a dragon that is a plane called the Red Baron.
