I'm pretty sure Skype is not banning adult file transfers.
Someone made a journal recently saying that come this March, Skype is banning all users who transmit porn through the Skype program.
Now, I'm a worrier by nature, and you all know I tend to jump on social justice bandwagons now and then. But if there's one thing that Kony 2012 taught me, it's that you need to ask questions first, THEN shoot. So I did a little research on Skype's terms of service.
http://www.skype.com/en/legal/tou-usa/
You may not submit or publish through the Skype Website or Software any User Submissions that are libelous, defamatory, pornographic, harassing, hateful, an invasion of privacy, obscene, abusive, illegal, racist, offensive, harmful to a minor or an infringement of any intellectual property rights or a trade secret of a third party, or would otherwise violate the rights of any third party or give rise to civil or criminal liability.
You may not "SUBMIT OR PUBLISH." And it explicitly refers to USER SUBMISSIONS. In other words, your personal skype website/profile/gallery/whatever.
Nothing is mentioned about personal transfers. It seems more like they're trying to keep people from uploading porn to their personal Skype pages and websites, rather than banning all transfers of adult material. To ban all adult material from your WEBSITE is still kinda prudish, but it's certainly not the same as banning you for private conversation.
Oh, and here. Quoted from the ToS.
5.7 Notice and Take-Down. If Skype receives any notification that any material that you post, upload, edit, host, share and/or publish on the Skype Website or through the Software (excluding your private communications) (“User Submission”) is inappropriate, infringes any rights of any third party, or if Skype wishes to remove your User Submission for any reason whatsoever, Skype reserves the right to automatically remove such User Submission for any reason immediately or within such other timescales as may be decided from time to time by Skype in its sole discretion.
So yeah. Skype is not going to ban you for sending that picture of a sexy raccoon lady to your friend. MILLIONS of people are using skype every single second of the day. To actively monitor every bit of information is an impossible task. Besides, we have the NSA to do that for us.

FA+

ok, so I want everyone to calm down and read my post. As some have mentioned, if you read the full terms of service, you will see points where they specifically exclude private Instant Messages. I refer you to this

What does this mean? well for anyone familiar with Microsoft, you know they have been rebranding all their services to include "One". This is their initiative to link all MS services together(Xbox One, One Drive, etc)
Recently MS changed their Skydrive service to "One Drive"
Now I don't have 100% proof, but given their recent history, I'm fairly certain MS is planning on linking Skype into the rest of their One services, as it's already on Xbox One. What i believe this is referring to, is One Drive. One Drive is basically a service that allows you to upload and share files(Think drop box) with others. MS has had to change the Skype ToS because they will be allowing file uploads to One Drive from skype and well, as usual, you can't upload and share anything that copywritten or objectionable. Private communications, IE, Instant messages between 2 people, are still protected and you can speak and share things freely as you can now. So everyone please just calm down
Good on you Lapin, thanks for actually READING shit XD
OT: it's a standard wording for any website hosting user content, that wants to cover their ass from the "your devil-powered service turned my innocent child into a sex-crazed lunatic" lawsuit. The other option would be to implement some sort of age-verification scheme. Given how slow MS is with updates to the skype client itself, that would take too much time and effort.
Hence they opted for the "even pg-13 is too kinky for you" solution and banned all naughty materials from their servers
The change is geared towards a social media venture using Skype which has been worked on over the past few years.
wow, people who say "MY CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHTS" or "That's unlawful" about internet things obviously don't understand the internet >_>
let us both laugh at their mosinderstnadings!
So yeh, while public internet ain't without it's rights, private sites have the things they can do that you couldn't do in public areas.
though that could be taken either way, i mean that i appreciate you going though the effort of digging though the tos and helping the rest of us see the logic behind this all the easier.
i've jumped the gun a few times in the past, but i wanted more answers and validation for this freakout too. it is a great comfort to know their are people still bothering to think about things around here. even more so to see them speak up. :D
so thank you. :)
Or in other other words, "The ends justify the means."
But I'm not going to elaborate, since that will just derail this whole journal.
""you mean there might be something I use that isn't porn? WHAT?! THIS IS CRAZY!""
....... You can use things for stuff besides porn?
Fact is, I am just someone that doesn't likes to be monitored for doing something that not illegal, and who is worried because that kind of thing seems to happen more and more, all over the world, not just in the USA.
As for the english ToU, well, heres the thing, I only can access the german version fully, because Skype automatically directs you to a language version that fits your IP adresse. So I had to rely on friend from outside germany to relay me the english version, and read it too so we can check the validity of this. Both he and me came to the same conclusion. As for the german ToU, its very poorly worded, worse than the english one.
So yeah, again, I'm not someone to start unwanted trouble or drama, I just read this shit over and thought it sounds very suspicious.
It's why I didn't mention you by name. I'm just saying that you need to do at least a little research before you make accusations.
In other words, don't be hasty. :)
