Bad Timming for More Car Issues. X-x Please read/help!

My fiancee 
kitta1652 main headlights and brights (high and low beams) on his car will not turn on. Not only is it unsafe to drive when it is dark out in the mornings and evenings (when he does drive), but if he does risk driving he can be slapped with a huge fine or risk being in an accident due to no lights. After some basic diagnostics the battery, fuses, and bulbs were ruled out. The multifunction lever is the most likely cause and if so it needs to be replaced. If he takes it to a dealer the minimum cost will be $500 USD. He could obtain the part aftermarket but that range is $70-$200 USD.
Also, he is due to be in the doctors office at 9am on Wednesday so he will need a ride there.
I can give him a ride but I cannot afford to replace these car parts. :(

It could be a part that costs $500.00 w/o labor to replace. I having a mechanic checking a wiring diagram for my car now before he says that's it for sure. This guy is good and works on cars as a job and a hobby. I know him just well enough to get him to work on it cheaper than a dealer and most shops. His job is at the dealership but I would be taking the car to his home to be worked on saving a little money but not much. I really hope it's not a $500 part.
