FA Rank aftermath & addressing some issues
17 years ago
Looks like everything has kind of settled down from the FA Rank drama. I have about two dozen new watchers since posting that, so if you're new, hi there!
I've received a lot of feedback regarding the project, so let me address it all here.
-I got a variety of reactions to my project, ranging from "I love it, please maintain/update" to "This doesn't contribute anything to the site" to "You're the biggest bastard/troll ever". One of the reactions I wasn't expecting was "I'm really that popular? I really appreciate you all for watching me."
-I got some criticism for the way I ranked users. Your ranking is solely based on who is watching you. I can't rank by favorites, comments, or views, because that would be too much data to pull. Also, your rank has NOTHING to do with the quality or quantity of art.
-For the ones that disapprove of this project, that's too bad. There's no use getting upset over it- it doesn't mean you'll never be a well known artist, or that your art sucks. Maybe you're just new and are a rising star, or you have a narrow focus of work that only a select few appreciate, or something similar. All I have done is collected and organized all of the information that is already publicly available on this site into one, easy-to-digest format.
-Why did I do it? I just finished up a class about data mining and information retrieval, and PageRank was discussed briefly. I decided to do this for FA because it's a site I care about, and it's just the right size. It's more a curiousity thing than anything else. And it's fun to challenge myself, to see if I can do it. Programming is more or less a form of art to me.
-As far as updates go, "we'll see."
It would be interesting to see how users move up or down the list over time, but I don't want people to obsess over it. I'm thinking if updates ever occur, they will be no more frequent than once per week or month.
I am currently talking with some admins to get data directly from the site instead of having to scan tens of thousands of pages. They may or may not approve of it, so just hang loose.
-One thing I would like to add is a "biggest movers" page to list who has jumped the farthest up on the list. This will help draw attention to "up-and-coming" artists. I'm still pondering how to balance it so you don't have that page filled with high- or low-ranked users.
As of right now, I've received nearly 86000 page views from 8000 unique IP's, and most of that was within the first day or so.
If you've got some free time, you can read what people had to say about it here:

This page contains a breakdown of the page views per hour. Insert tasteless joke about California wildfires here...

And now, back to your regularly scheduled art!

I hope you'll be able to update the list! (I hope to improve my ranking, teehee)
i'll put it this way if a person isnt an artist but they manage to get some commisions they can get a higher rank than someone who actually is an artist if they go about it the right way. i speak from experience as my mate who hasnt done any art of any kind ever actually has a higher rank than me by over 1000. its a disgrace, this guy is purposefully leaving out data in his calculations. basing it all solely on the number of watchers one has because as stated in this journal using everything would just be too much data to pull.
it is the admittance of that right there which only proves the inaccuracy of the site. i dont have a problem with him doing this. all i say is before you congratulate him on it maybe you should consider how its going to make other people feel who dont score as high a rank as they deserve. he needs to make it as accurate as possible so it can be as fair as possible. i would think you knew that tigg.
p.s. just try hitting ME with a wet noodle blazger. i dare yah. o.~
Only someone who was mental would leave the fandom over a listing of facts
It'll be interesting to see any updates, but in any case, it's an interesting little experiment, so well done there. Clearly you've not intended for it to cause any drama, and you've got the right idea about what's important, so I think people should stop complaining and appreciate what you've contributed.
(Oh, and also, hurrah for me being 982nd. Whoo!! Lol!)
BTW...
this is my 6000th comment! ahaha!
I think this project has a lot of positive potential. No matter how much people bitch, it is good to know how well you do against everyone else - if for nothing more than to motivate yourself to do better. I always plan to do better, and to also advertise my art more, so more people will watch me. It doesn't have to be a popularity contest, but that said... a bit of competitive spirit can help sometimes.
I'd like to see whatever developments you make, especially with the opportunity to use more data from the site itself.
Just curious.
I know personally my work has a very narrow focus, so it would be great to eventually see (if humanly possible) a ranking system thats geared more toward quality than quantity.
Either that or I'll have to start drawing breasts.
It was a kick to look up myself and a few I know on the counter. Thanks for posting it.
