Wristcutters: A Love StoryTwenty-something Zia just broke up with his girlfriend. Overcome with grief, he decides to end it all and slices his wrists open. Unfortunately for him, this causes him to be taken to a strange world inhabited solely by people who have committed suicide. It's exactly like the world here, only a little worse.
Eventually Zia gets word that his ex also killed herself, and embarks on a roadtrip to find her. Joining him is his Russian rock star friend (who went out with an electric guitar and bottle of beer) and a laid back hitchhiker (who is convinced she is there by mistake, and is trying to find the People in Charge).
As far as indie comedies go, this is definitely on of the weirder ones. While the overall subject matter is fairly dark, the movie itself is a sweet little love story, with a good amount of humor (usually on the surreal or dry side) and some great production values for a low budget film. The acting is great, a really good show from a cast of mostly unknowns (though Will Arnett does have a bit of a cameo as a cult leader who wants to kill himself... again).
I want to also point out the soundtrack to this film. Like most indie movies, it's filled with music you've never heard of. In this case, it's got everything from a Russian song (from the aforementioned rocker) and Alaskan throat singing, and it all sounds great. Really hits the spot and feels just right for the movie.
It's a very strange movie, and probably not one for everyone. But I still think everyone should give it a shot, and see if it works for them. I believe that it's a smart and charming little comedy, and one that deserves a bit more attention.

Though I know what you mean. I got the book 1001 Movies to Watch Before You Die for Christmas, and I've been obsessing over it ever since (I'm only at about 76 watched right now. Got a loooooong way to go).
Or do you mean the 1001 Movies... thing? Yeah, that's a book too (well, more like a guideline) :P
And the story was Kneller's Happy Campers in the book The Bus Driver Who Wanted To Be God (good read, check it out sometime).
