No.. but it is password protected so the next ime they boot they won't be able to use it.

Ehh, unless you encrypted the data on a separate partition, it's easy to get anything off a hard drive, as well as remove the password, or just reimage the thing.

But I'll stop spouting security babble. Not even the UK government takes the necessary precautions to avoid laptops with sensitive unencrypted data from being stolen out of the back seats of cars.

I am quite sorry to hear that, I know what it is like to have something that was saved stolen (though thought it was well hidden and not stolen early on which was why it was not reported right away....) so I do hope that whomever stole it will find karma rolling over them, and things returned to you one way or another.

I was helping out some people who needed a temp place to stay. Well 1 month turned into over 6 and the lady had a baby in the process. When I finally told them it was time to start looking for a place of their own they blew up and just packed up and left. After they were gone I found they had ransacked my kids stuff and what they didn't hawk they broke... When I went to look for them they had vanished. I mean stealing from me is one thing but to knowingly steal from a kid..... Oh well, it's water under the bridge. Let me take a look around and see what we can do to help replace her PC.

Yeah, that was REALLY low! And you got a point that $1,000 isn't bad in terms of what all they could have taken.

If I were you, I'd look into figuring out how they got in, and take measures to correct that. Ever see the TV show "To Catch a Thief" on Discovery?

You may not be able to afford all the gizmos they arm the house with on that show, but you at least get some very useful pointers.

I know how it feels. it feels like you have been raped. Violated. I've been there twice. But all I can say is that these are just material things. the bright side is that your family is safe and unharmed.

Also, thank the failing economy for a rise in crime rate like this. I would suggest that you have a police report filed, then check out any pawn shops in the area and see if they have received any items. Its worth a shot. Best of luck and I hope you can get something back.

If you have time and the like, hit up the local Pawn Shops, you might find your stuff, and can alert the Police to their current location. Pawn Shops are required, by law, to keep records of who pawned them stuff for this very reason.

Just depends on how "Law Abiding" the Pawn Shop is.

Wow...laptops seem a popular object for left. Someone broke into my brothers place a while ago while he had my wii. Ignored the wii and stole his laptop. Someone also stole his estranged wifes keys and broke into the place she worked. o.o; I hope they catch the guy though.

Well if there was anything obviously small and valuable in the open between where the living room is, where you ipod was, and where you daughters laptop was, it might have been someone doing it for spite, or maybe even a stranger after personal information. The fact that only small things where taken suggest that the person was likely on foot or in a small car, perhaps using a bag for the DVDs and lap top. Since the hair straightener was taken I'm guessing it might have been a girl, or perhaps a guy with long hair. Still, if your daughters computer was EVER used to buy anything online, or to enter/access personal information, you might want to get to changing some passwords, or even monitoring your online accounts to avoid possible identity theft.

Ah well... at the end of the day, they're just things. The important things, your daughter's life, your life, your girlfriend's life, are all intact... things can be purchased again. Lives are much too sacred.
