I dread this.

"So what do you do for a living?"
As a furry artist, I never seem prepared for that question when it gets asked in casual conversation.
I usually just say one of these;
"oh, I do freelance graphic design/illustration for a living."
"I draw people's imaginations."
"I draw personal artwork of people's own original ideas."
So, knowing very well that I just can't say "I draw anthropomorphic animals having sex and/or eating each other", what nifty answers do you guys say to dodge that question?
It also helps that I'm a complete social buffoon, so if I said "I draw cartoon animals having sex" as a joke, people would probably believe me.
If I tell someone, "I'm an artist."
They'll go "oh so you draw portraits of people's families, landscapes etc?"
The general public's view of what art can be is so limited, it's depressing sometimes.
But yeah, the limited art view part I've come across so much... It really is a bit depressing :(
It's rough, and I hate lying about it (especially since what I'm saying in the lies are what my end-goal is), but it's necessary to explain the side-cash I've been making. It'd be a lot worse if it was a full-time gig situation.
Since 'fantasy' is a very broad subject and all. It's pretty much how I'd answer it too xP And you'd be surprised how often 'professional artists' and game designers work vore into their material. If they're crafty enough, it won't even look out of place! *cough* Dragon's Dogma hydra anyone? TELL ME the person who came up with that was not in any way fascinated by the notion of a creature eating someone. >:P
But yeah. Giving a detailed answer would be tough. I know some people aren't exactly afraid to go out and say that they're not afraid to draw anything that's thrown at them, but most would prefer that the more 'unusual' subjects they draw remain hidden, so a broader "I draw fantasy" generally covers it nicely enough.
If only I had the balls.
Looking backing, I wonder if the writers of Family Guy feel the same (after all their jokes tends to be adult orientated).
I made a SFW tumblr that I just show people.

Obviously, I don't look them dead in the eye and go, "Sex. Stand-up-animal sex."
I do, however, sort of ween them into the topic. "It's kind of... an interesting topic. Do you know what anthropomorphism is?" If they say no, then: "The best way I can describe it is werewolves. Not exactly werewolves, what, with the turning back and forth between a wolf dude and a human, but the standing-up wolf thing. Kind of like that. Human-like animals." If they still don't understand? "Think of it like me, standing here and talking to you, but with a muzzle, ears, a tail, and fur. Standing, walking, talking animals."
They usually get it at that point.
I usually back up the descriptions with SFW pictures I have saved on my phone.
After that, depending on how well I know the person, how close to me they are, and/or how open-minded they are, I'll tell them to the level of which I write it. Either fantasy settings with dragons and stuff, or blurting out "furry sex!" x3
Non human characters are almost a given.
And no know seems to know what "Anthropomorphic" means...
Although, I been sneaking the term "Cosplay" and people are okay with that as much as SCA.
me and my boyfriend were literally JUST discussing this last night.
'I draw animal anal penetration for a living, gramps!'
Hope that helps a bit
