GoFundMe - Help Me Get a New Cintiq!

By Dragoneer, 3 months ago
I've never really asked for anything personal like this, but... I really, REALLY need to upgrade my art gear for both personal and FA work. I'm trying to raise money to upgrade my art studio so I can spend more time creating on stuff and less time dealing with a dying Cintiq (backlight is going out).

http://www.gofundme.com/7paw6o

I'm offering many shinies in return for help. <3
Want to donate to FA? Help us out by buying Amazon gift cards so we can upgrade our servers!

I'm not so sure if I have enough on me. $2,500 is a lot by standards.

Yes, it is. It's a lot to ask, hence why I'm giving out out lots of little rewards as thanks for those who can help.

I use GIMP and Paint Tool SAI to this day. And as a coincidence, I use an Intuos Wacom Tablet....Cintiq is also made by Wacom too. But...you sure you want to get money for a new one?

A cintiq is made by Wacom, yes, it's just a different model than the Intuos.

Pretty much anyone who uses a Bamboo/Intuos, and tries a Cintiq, wants one :I

(No Subject) Posted: 3 months ago

The big selling points of Cintiq's and why they're expensive is because you draw directly on the cintiq monitor itself so you're drawing directly on the canvas. Personally wanting to save up for the much cheaper yinova which is about 1/4th the price.

  nightlinez

(No Subject) Posted: 3 months ago

Out of curiosity how long did your Cintiq last? I may be in the market for one myself in the future!

Also, good luck!

  dragoneer

(No Subject) Posted: 3 months ago

My original Cintiq was literally one of the ORIGINAL ones from 2005. So... almost 10 years? It's still working, but it's not aged as well as I'd have liked. Post FAU, I decided to quit gaming except on weekends and focus all my free time back into art and FA across the board.

This FAU woke me up to a lot of things, and namely that I need to be a better "me" across the board. To my art. To my community. So... yeah. I feel excited for once. =D

  nightlinez

(No Subject) Posted: 3 months ago

WOW! That is a good life span! I have my Intous 5 and my horrible running Macbook. I have been on the fence about getting a Cintiq because of the price. Heck if oen of the newer ones can run for that long that would be worth it!

Glad that you are deciding to do more for the community too! I can't wait to see more art from you because you don't post enough of it!

There is a cheaper alternative to the cintiq called yinova, only downside is that their pens require batteries.

  nightlinez

(No Subject) Posted: 3 months ago

Ohh. I will have to look into that! Never heard of that one!

  dragoxicon

(No Subject) Posted: 3 months ago

Sorry to butt in, I just thought I could offer a helpful comment! I have the smallest model they offer. While i've never used a cintiq, I do have an intuos 4 and using the yiynova was a bit of a hassle. It's chinese and has a very annoying installation process that took about 2 hours to setup on my computer and it's a hassle everytime i unplugged and plugged it back in trying to get dual screen set up or just using its screen. The screen is glass with a screen under that (I know because I dropped it and it's $80 to replace the screen) and requires a bit of force when using the pen. I still have yet to reach a desirable pressure sensitivity, but I really only spent about 3 weeks fiddling around with it.
Perhaps I'd like it if I gave it more time, but for $300 for a screened tablet, I can't complain.

There's still more Summer Updates to come. I'm trying to nail down a lot of fixes and polish before we take it to beta. So yes, there's a LOT of stuff coming in line for FA as well. Fixing our broken rules system to lay new groundwork for admins and closing broken policy was the start.

UI and usability improvements (desktop and mobile) are the focus next.

Sure a good tablet helps, but $2,500? Really? x3

I plan on getting back into 3D and digital animation, which is what my career was long ago. I want to be able to, one day, return to art and design as my career, put more time into FA. So yeah...

  danza

(No Subject) Posted: 3 months ago

Well maybe I'm wrong here but I get the feeling you can STILL create amazing artwork/3Dwork/animations on devices that cost less than that. For me I realized that for my tablet it was a great investment but still... It's $550 worth of commissions + PC use/depreciation to just break even on the investment!

  lexgoyle

(No Subject) Posted: 3 months ago

Having played with 3D in the past the only viable use for a tablet is in digital sculpting but other than that even the pros mainly rock a keyboard / mouse.

  ahahah this is hilarious.

A Wacom tablet is $100 on Amazon. If you want the nicer things in life (aka this) get a job / work for it like everyone else. You do not need $2500 for "me n my wifu to get back into art or something".

No.

  dragoneer

(No Subject) Posted: 3 months ago

I do have a job, and do work. I am also offering incentives for those who wish to get something in exchange rather than merely asking for it. If some choose to support me, well... hurray! If not no big deal.

  lollazer

(No Subject) Posted: 3 months ago

  Well, aren't we cunty today.

  flinters

(No Subject) Posted: 3 months ago

A Wacom *tablet* may be $100, but a Wacom *Cintiq* is much more expensive because it's not the same thing at all. It's a full LCD monitor with drawing surface for the stylus. Can you do the same thing with a standard tablet? Yes, but that's akin to saying you can use a rock to paint a Mona Lisa. You want good work, you use good tools. I have gone the route of tablets to PC Tablets to finally a Cintiq. The results are worth it.

And I would definitely call the creation, maintenance, and upgrades of the #1 social and art site in the fandom is a HUGE job. Considering he doesn't take pay for people to use the site, then it has to support itself through ads and dontations. Until you run a huge site like this yourself and NOT GET PAID FOR YOUR WORK, then you really have no leg to stand on to make such comments.

This is my opinion only. But it's based on my experience and I think the way Dragoneer is doing this is completely open and honest.

Don't want to donate? That's fine. Don't.
.

  dragoneer

(No Subject) Posted: 3 months ago

*nods* I thought about that long and hard. While we've asked for things in the past site-wise, I've never really asked for anything for me. And I'm trying to balance a lot of bills and other issues, and trying to (hopefully) make it so I can one day work on the site full time and dedicate ALL my time to FA, tickets and upgrades... not just my spare time.

That's my end goal and dream. I want to be able to draw and work on projects and maintain the site *as* my job, not just my spare time.

If I had the kind of funding to do that I'd put in my resignation on the spot and work to focus on this site day in, day out. Sadly... that's not quite an option, at least not yet. It's a long term goal.

  flinters

(No Subject) Posted: 3 months ago

Early on I made a rule for myself- art must pay for art. I didn't want to risk having any silly purchases or tools get in the way of my normal daily income that pays for bills, mortgage, etc. If I wanted something like my Cintiq, vehicle lift in the garage, or other toys, the I had to earn it by drawing. And thanks to Tigerdile, I do pretty darn good at it. I would be nowhere without my customer base and fans. I credit FA and Tigerdile for making the opportunity even available to me.

You have a goal. Self improvement. And you're doing it in a way that ensures that you're going to do it in a responsible manner. How you raise funds changes only really in the format. This is no different than taking in commission requests. You're offering a service for a donation. I find no fault in this. People don't have to donate. That is their choice, as it should be.

As the old saying goes, "Don't quit your day job, kid." And it's true. You do a good job of keeping FA and your personal life separate.

(No Subject) Posted: 3 months ago

And a proper Intuos costs $300-400. The cheap Intuos on Amazon are basically just rebranded Bamboos (legacy Graphires). They're good for doodling, but not for hardcore work.

i guess people don't understand that a Cintiq is not a regular tablet. I have a problem with the disconnect between screen/hand on a normal tablet, so Cintiq was the best choice for me. Are you going for the 24HD?

(No Subject) Posted: 3 months ago

Yeah.... I've heard reviews of these things, spotty wifi, battery issues, not something I'd want to invest a lot of money on. Granted, it's a hell of a lot better than a Microsoft Surface Pro 3, but still... I'm sticking with my Cintiq 13HD, it's my first Cintiq, and I intend to use the hell out of it.

  muskie

(No Subject) Posted: 3 months ago

Ugh, the Companion? at that price?!

It'd be easier to grab a Surface Pro 1 or 2 at a third or half that, and they're just as good, if not *better* than the companion..

and let's not get started about the Android one. bleh. all that's good for is plugging into your PC and using as a 6 inch cintiq, and is priced the same way.

  dragoneer

(No Subject) Posted: 3 months ago

Yeah, the 24HD is what I have my eyes on. =3

  flinters

(No Subject) Posted: 3 months ago

I like the wide screen aspect, but owners of them do NOT like the stand or the lack of rotation that the prior 21UX had. They went backwards in user design there. I have my 21UX on a Ergotron monitor arm that handles all that so I think it would be a good option for a 24HD. Maybe once this one dies, I'll go up to that.

  dragoneer

(No Subject) Posted: 3 months ago

The rotation could be useful, but now that most art apps have a built in rotation I don't find much need for it anymore.

  flinters

(No Subject) Posted: 3 months ago

It's one thing to rotate the art, but when you can rotate the canvas / Cintiq itself, it just helps more for how your arm and wrist work with the screen. The difference between the original 21UX V shaped stand and having it mounted on the Ergotron monitor arm was like night and day. I think I paid $130 or so. :redpandacase: and pmoss  pmoss have them and convinced me to go that route as well. I love it.

That said, now you have me getting 24HD envy. Bah! Maybe after Further Confusion...

i have the 22HD. Good range of motion. hotkeys. i <3

  flinters

(No Subject) Posted: 3 months ago

For hotkeys, I use a Logitech G13 gaming macro keypad. It's a USB standalone keypad that was *meant* for using in games for weapon choices, communications, key combos. It has 22 primary keys that have three banks to make them worth 66 buttons, plus a few other side buttons that I don't use. What it really does it let you record keyboard macros, shortcuts, etc, and saved as profiles by application. I can have a set of macros set up for Photoshop, Manga Studio, and Sketchbook Pro. Since they all use slightly different key combos for the same thing, I can map each function to the same key for all three apps. That means regardless of what the real keyboard combo is, I know that THIS button will sample color, THIS button does rotate, THIS button is the SHIFT key, etc.

I can keep one hand on that handy device and the other drawing on the Cintiq and never have to touch the keyboard. Very quick, very easy, very nice.

  flinters

(No Subject) Posted: 3 months ago

Hmm, okay, there is a little joystick on this thing. I wonder if I could use it for moving the canvas view around? You may have given me an idea!

  ironraptor

(No Subject) Posted: 3 months ago

This is more than a joystick though, it's a six axis mouse that can respond to pulling, pushing, twisting and tilt as well as forward back left and right. 3dconnexion.com has different ones, I have the old wired SpaceNavigator, I may go for the wireless one since I hate fidgeting with wires

Dude you should really look into this. Wacom is great and I'll stand by them with my intuos, but I personally used one of these babies and thought it was just as nice as a cintiq. for a fraction of the price. it has great pen pressure, great features. Only thing is that the surface is super slick, which some people don't like. I'd really look into the reviews and see if it's a good alternate. Cintiq's are cool but there are most certainly competitors out there!!!
http://www.amazon.com/Yiynova-MSP19...../dp/B009QQ7BG0

  muskie

(No Subject) Posted: 3 months ago

The yiynovas are great and all, but let's face it. if something goes wrong, good fucking luck getting anything close to parts or service.
The only reason most people still bother with Wacom is because there's still really, REALLY good build quality, and service/parts are worldwide and reasonably easy to get.

  fivel

(No Subject) Posted: 3 months ago

I agree, wacom has pretty fantastic customer service. But hey, they like to think they have a monopoly on tablets but the fact is that competitors are coming in with some fantastic, affordable hardware. Wacom tablets are really fucking expensive, and the cintiq large alone is an obscene amount of money. Wacom has great service and great quality, but they can't keep pretending they still monopolize the market.
Monoprice, yiynovas, there are tablets available that are seriously impressive. I do not know much about yiynova in terms of customer service but when you realize that it's actually cheaper to get a complete replacement of that tablet and STILL have funds to spare... I dunno, I think it's worth a shot. It's gotten great reviews and I had no issues when I used it. I actually preferred it, because unlike the cintiq it didn't lag at all! it was super nice and crisp.

here's a great review if you wanna look more into it =D http://frenden.com/post/38693256477/yiynovamsp19u

  muskie

(No Subject) Posted: 3 months ago

  I understand ya perfectly.

Personally, what I REALLY want is a Surface Pro 1. You can find those things pretty cheap ($4-600) if you know where to look, and it's an 11 inch 1080p tablet with a proper Wacom powered display. And, y'know, a dual core i5 2.2 ghz rig that can play Crysis 3 on low...

Hoping to be able to pick one of those up with the proceeds from my comic book. :P

  celestina

(No Subject) Posted: 3 months ago

Have you used this? I'm really interested in the alternatives, but Wacom tends to make their pens thicker/bigger which is easier on my hands.

  fivel

(No Subject) Posted: 3 months ago

Yes, it's great. Its cable is a little short so you may need to get an extension cord but that is pretty much the only downside. one possible downside (depending on if its your thing or not) it has a super smooth glassy screen. some people like it to have a rougher texture like the intuos 5, it didnt bother me though :D
it is fantastic. i'm sure you could get a little grippy thing for the pen to make it thicker =) cause i feel the same way. the pen felt pretty good to me though!

  spidie

(No Subject) Posted: 3 months ago

The yiynova pen I use was the same size as my wacom bamboo's pen. Also it's been like 8 months and my nib still hasn't worn out. The screen is also pretty solid too. I think it's a good alternative to a cintiq.

Kind of curious... Since yer the owner of FA why do you need to do a GoFundMe page when you get tons of money from advertizements and such from the site?

  dragoneer

(No Subject) Posted: 3 months ago

Because this is for personal use (even though it will benefit FA). Money FA receives goes to FA solely. And while the ads DO make money they don't make that much. I'd rather buy a new server to upgrade our storage system with FA cash than buy me a Cintiq (so we can allow ultra-high ress image upload support).
