Again, sorry for the delay. I have some really bad news to give everyone. Though, it's more tragic for me than for the FAers.
It turns out that all the local hospitals in my area have stopped hiring ADN-degreed nurses. That's just the associate's degree. As of last week they sent out a widespread memo that says they won't hire an ADN nurse unless the floor that that ADN is applying to has a BSN (bachelor's degree) percentage of 50% or higher. But they don't say that on their website NOR do they tell the ADN that. (I only know this because I have some sources on the inside.) NONE of the floors currently have a BSN percentage of 50% or higher, so of course... that means no floor is hiring ADNs. And this is to help the transition that come January they will NO LONGER BE HIRING ADNS AT ALL. That's it. The other hospital has instituted a policy that they aren't hiring ADNs anymore and their current ADNs are required to upgrade to a BSN within four years or they're fired.
My degree is useless. I spent five years tearing my hair out trying to get through this program with the promise that there was going to be a future on the other side and there isn't.
That being said, I can't afford to go back to school. Because I already have a bachelor's degree in English, I cannot get financial aid for a second bachelor's degree. (Just like I couldn't get any financial aid for a tech degree, but that was a lot cheaper to afford.)
I can't get more student loans because I can't afford to pay off the ones I got from my bachelor's degree. So they're not going to give me more money. And I already "used up" the scholarships and grants that I could get.
A mid-range RN to BSN program is about 12-15 months and about $20,000. Yeah, ain't nobody got money for something like that just laying around.
So I'm faced with a choice. I have to choose between a life-ruining private loan through some shady place like Sallie Mae (which WILL destroy you) to upgrade to a BSN.... in which I'll be crushed under student loan debts I'll never be able to pay back in my life time. That is, I'll get the RN job but due to the crazy amount of student loan debts... that means that I won't be able to make a decent living off of the wages ANYWAY. And the life I wanted for myself is over.
Or I can NOT do that and.... the life I wanted for myself is still over but with more manageable student loan debts. I might actually be able to pay them off. To do this, though, I'd have to raise the money to move somewhere else in the country----most likely to a poorer location that will still be interested in hiring ADNs instead of BSNs. That will give me time to come up with the money to maybe upgrade or get into a facility that would pay for it, such as the VA. But that's a pretty serious gamble.
Anyway, that's the reason for my radio silence if anyone was wondering. It's a never ending rat race on my end and.... as I'm sure you guys have mostly figured out... shit just does NOT go my way. I'll keep everyone posted.

Doing a cursory glance, I know one state you had intentions on moving to still hires ADNs ;)
I know the move cost is pricey for pods and you cant afford it right now. But we are talking about down the road.
I work at a rehab clinic and they would pay me double if I had an ADN
I'm sorry to hear this. I can't think of anything to help.
All-in-all, good luck with the job hunt. I had a could friends get their BSN and I know the jobs are out there and will pay nicely. Whatever your future holds, I truly hope it works out for you.
