UI Progress & Update
Still working towards the open beta for the UI. Progress is going, and a lot of things have been tweaked, updated, changed, tweaked and twerked. I've had to go back and re-do a lot of things as I found several more efficient ways to handle things (reducing some pages by upwards of 75% in file size).

Damn comment hiding feature. It's annoying to us nosy folk.
Anyway, yay for UI update.
And could you include some kind of categorization system in the notes, like the ability to make folders?
I hate it when I make a journal and there's a wall of "hidden" comments before I can see the visible ones. It would be nice to just completely remove them and get to the relevant stuff. If they are still shown as hidden and there's too many of them, I have to make ANOTHER journal just to re-organize.
It would be much more functional to have the ability to just ERASE a comment IMO.
Removing and being able to edit comments should be the only options. Hiding them is the old way and should be done away with - users should be able to just erase comments, pure and simple.
I hate it when I have to keep my inbox overflowing with messages because the person I'm noting deletes the conversation and writes something new on a new note. This means I have to save every in and out note just to refer to the conversation, which takes up valuable space in the in/outbox.
Folders would mean I can move the most important messages to another organized space, put the crap into the trash, and have my inbox open for new messages.
How about the "hide pony content" button? I am tired of seeing myself posting pony content.
Seems like you have the entire framework and logic built to add that function today.
PS: Images displayed per page: 256?? DAFUQ
Here you go:

Will FA ever have a PNG option and not having to always convert the file to JPEG before posting?
Ill have to look out for the size next time o:
Try not to overuse this, it's technically a bug. :P
I know that all of the enhancements are coming, and the UI is going to come out, and you guys are tweaking things and fixing things. It's all good stuff. But I fear what will happen if you fix this glitch some day, and you basically force everyone who wants to do comic panels to make their readers try to read them at 1280 x 1280...it will effectively kill that style of art from this site. Imagine Spiderman at 1280 x 1280...what did MJ say? Nobody knows, because it's at 3.1 Comic Sans font, and anti-aliased.
I know of a few popular artists who do panel art with frequency (
It sure would be nice, though, if panel art were treated how it's supposed to be treated - like four to nine images, or submissions, at once, that just happen to be talking to each other. And if they were given the same resolution cap on that level. If we were given a pick box for that when we were submitting that kind of art, so nobody had to do this back-alley shady resubmit thing that could turn around and bite us in the keyster some day when all of our art gets auto-resized in some update you guys run. Or just yanked.
Out of this, that's my only concern and gripe. Otherwise, the new UI looks leagues above the current.
But it looks interesting so far.
*sip*
also lookin pretty cool so far, i personally have always loved FA's current layout (i'm weird like that) but maybe a fresh start is indeed in order.
It's very high on my list.
- Keyword tags are looking nicer, though the description box is still very cramped; it gives me a small headache trying to sort through the text. Perhaps a little bit of resizing and moving would help it? (Five second photoshop thing: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u.....escription.png ) Give it some negative space and some room to breathe, and prioritise the text.
- Not sure about the size of the Prev/Next Submission thing. Seems to take up far too much screen real estate for something so minor.
- The Favorite/Download/Send Note thing seems pretty bland and unnoticable, and isn't in a very useful position. Below the prev/next buttons, and above the description? These are important links the user will be using all the time, especially Favorite and Download. Some icons might look nice and make it more easily apparently whether you've already faved something or not.
As far as the Prev/Next and Fav/Note I'm still toying with the best placement/sizing/etc.
I can't wait to try it out.
=^.,.^=
Sorry just hard to be happy with any update if its not one that will actually benefit how it's run but instead how pretty it is.
You could have the fanciest watch on Earth, but if it doesn't work, what good is it?
Also note that the new UI is likely a lot smaller, CSS-wise, which will free up resources on FA's servers. should make things a bit more snappy.
It is indeed, "The same old system going into a new box", as you put it.
Things should, however, be slightly snappier, as the New UI won't take as long to serve to clients as the old one, thus decreasing FA's server load. That improvement may still be in the microsecond level, but if you mulltiply that by the amount of pages FA serves per day to clients, every little bit helps.
"I've had to go back and re-do a lot of things as I found several more efficient ways to handle things (reducing some pages by upwards of 75% in file size)."
Lower file size = Less data to transfer from FA's Server to you = Less Strain on servers = Faster Loading of webpage = Faster FA.
I will admit the current site does need work but it wouldn't be hard to add onto the site instead of redoing it
He's just updating on what he has so far looks-wise.
That's why he mentioned an open beta. :T
First sentence. :P
I just meant that people are getting critical over how this update is only on looks and not how well it will actually run, when I don't think he's even doing any of that coding. >_> So this is the update that he CAN provide.
IDK, I think with the new layout, it might help site performance, to a degree. If my logic is correct, I believe FA is running on a similar, if not the same, web architecture from 2005/2009 - which by today's standards is ancient.
If there is coding being done to the UI, then something has to done to the HTML to be able to it handle it, right?
FA as of present is actually quite functional and fast, but has short periods of lag. But, I live with it.
All we can do is hope that more improvements will be made than we think.

Now I can watch YouTube at night without my eyes being burned out
I use a similar grey shade for almost all the websites I use frequently.

Also, the amount of notes
Might I suggest colouring and/or bolding the S / N / C / J to stand out a bit, should help in dividing such to a degree and stand out much easier.
Could be in the default red text that you got there for sections.
Speaking of that, wouldn't a more orangish tone work better with the sites overall theme? Red does pop out but it seems forced.

Just want to clarify also that this is a legit source?
IDK, I haven't been keeping up much.
Thanks :D
i noticed currently if you set them bigger warning thumbnails stop working.
I'm using a dark theme with stylish right now that looks decent on the site if it helps. My only gripe is the notifications area looks super clustered. It was hard for me to actually read it.
I can't wait for the editing comments thing though, ugh typos are the bane of my existence. The font is a little off to me for some reason but i'm sure that's easy to fix ! can't wait to see the next updates.
Questions:
- What do you plan to do for full view? When clicked to view will there be a pop-up within the same page of the full sized image?
- Following this which is another valid point - will you be fixing the sizing bug to where it constrains the image to the proper container definitely or only upon non-full view?
- What will be the difference between hide and delete comments?
- Are you intending on a 'light' version of this or will we be strictly on the dark theme?
- Highlight newest comments for the past? <- I'm quite confused about this
Other suggestions:
- More clear separation and clarity between all the message types
- On the 'comment capabilities' with the B/I/U, perhaps including 'link' types? Between custom page links ([url=" "]) as well as the : iconusername : option as a button? Not sure how fesable this would be, but there are people who still have to ask how to do the coding in comments.
- Edit comment possibility instead of 'hide' and have a edited time stamp
Positives I like:
- Not too cluttered directly under the picture
- Adverts at the bottom of the page, as to not interfere with the own artists page/work
The notification number/letter things at the top seem to run together.
On most projects, we have decided not to show the post or comment count per person on purpose. There are several reasons for that, but the most important ones are that people with a high post count tend to fall into domineering roles, seeing high post count as affirmation of their seniority/superiority, that people with lower post counts take offense or are intimidated, and people tend to do more spam posts/updates/comments, simply to boost their number, making life for moderators harder and inflating/clogging up the database.
Especially seeing that FA often has capacity problems, which look database-related, that could add to the list of negatives.
Apart from that, lovely :) If you wanna set it apart some more, maybe use an embedded font instead of the usual arial/verdana/etc?
Just wondering since after Full HD is established and ultramegahyper-Definition is on the horizon.
I know you can dodge that rule but it would be nice not to have to submit everything twice.
If the site can be tweaked to actually handle hi-rez pics, I'd like to see the limit raised to 2560*1440 or at least 2000*2000.
As for larger file sizes, they're very high on our list, but we need to upgrade the site storage system before we can raise the cap.
An obvious reference to "THERE ARE FOUR LIGHTS" :p
Wouldn't it be better to put the text box for commenting on journals and submissions at the top above the comments, right after submission description or journal post, then have comments and replies below the text box.
The reason being, As for people like yourself and artists that get a lot of comments for posting something, It can take awhile to scroll to find the textbox.
Take this journal as an example. you already got 100+ posts for writing a small post. So having it near the text box near what you wrote would be easier on everyone.
Especially those using a phone, tablet device or touch screen, as it can be quite fiddly to scroll through a lot of comments.
As the vicar said to the stripper, looking good so far. Clean design is clean.
Critique re. layout of comments: Try and strengthen the association between an icon
and a username. Current layout has the username flush with the icon and distinct from
the text. Good. Our eyes see both within the same [narrow] visual frame.
New design tries to suggest a comment as a speech balloon emanating from the
icon. Nicht so gut, resulting in a 'cognitive hiccup' as our brain tries to figure out who
sent us the comment.
Oh wait, there's this name over here to the right that's separate from the icon;
that must be it. Conclusion: UI design is a bitch. As with all tech stuff, it's the little
things [with all the sharp pointy teeth].
Speaking of little things: What point size are you using for the Open Sans body text?
Need-to-know is mega-crucial re. setting up the software to convert some +800 FAWD
list pages from Verdana to Open Sans. And about 450 pages of story text on the
fwbrown61 account; groan...
On the other paw, 's turning out to be easy coding. But gotta know that pt size.
TIA.
PS: Shall renew suggestion re. keywords: Keep 'em in the current location.
Story text posted in the comment box will push the keywords waaaay
the hell down the screen. We want users to be able to see 'em
easily so they can use 'em.
PPS: Re. the ever-constant and droning requests for folders, may I suggest that
Yak spend a few minutes on a tech write-up about folders.
In which he will describe, in all it's awesomely gruesome gory detail, just how
much of FA's codebase will need to ripped up with a chainsaw and totally rewritten.
On top of all the DB restructuring. After, that is, we've mopped up all the [digital]
blood in the server room.
Anybody who asks about folders again, point them to that article. Only side
effect: A lotta furs with their pelts scared white. (Heck, just thinking about it
is enough to do it to me. :- ) )
