"The Jet Gamer" Game Review: Pokemon Alpha Sapphire
10 years ago
Hey guys, first game that isn't a sonic game, so let's see how this goes. I'll also have all pokemon information about if you want to battle me at the end of the review. So enjoy the new review.
Pokemon: Alpha Sapphire
Another Pokemon game in the series. Once again, we are going to dive into the world of Pokemon to get a look at what the developers have in store for us this time. This time though, with Pokemon Alpha Sapphire and Omega Ruby, we are going once again back to the Hoenn Region to take on the eight gym leaders and Pokemon league of this remake of the GBA games Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire. But, how did the remake of these Pokemon games fair overall?
Gameplay
Pokemon Alpha Sapphire plays just like the last gen of Pokemon, so if you have played the last several Pokemon games that have been released, this one will come as no surprised to you. You run around, collect Pokemon, battle them, train them, and advance yourself along the several routes of the region as you work to become the new pokemon league champion. Nothing new here, but the concept still works, so there is very little need to change what already works. There aren't really that many new gameplay mechanics in this new version of Pokemon that weren't in X and Y, and any new mechanics that weren't in the last game were mechanics that were in the original Ruby and Sapphire. It still works though.
Story
Once again, this has really not changed. You play the same route you did in the old game and go about collecting the normal eight badges to take on the Pokemon League while battling Team Aqua as they plan to flood the world and revive an ancient Pokemon. So pretty much, if you have played the original game, you know everything that is going to happen already, with a few new twists here and there based on new mechanics that were in X and Y, such as getting mega evolution and such like that. However, there is additional story after the main game, so it is a nice little surprise that they did feel the need to add at least something new to the overall experience so that it wasn't a total rehash of the old story with nothing new at all. I won't spoil what happens, but they did go a lot more in depth into something that was already sort of a part of the main game, but it was never really done in that much depth. Still, the Sapphire story was never anything really that impressive to me though, so while it does a nice job of keep you interested, it isn't as intense as some of the new Pokemon stories have been.
Graphics
Nothing really that new here in this Pokemon game. It is pretty much the same graphics that were used in Pokemon X and Y. I'm sure there have been some tweaks here and there, but they did occasionally show off what these new graphics can do. There is the part where later in the game you get a flute to ride around on your games legendary in a style that looks like an airship from Final Fantasy. Getting to see the entire region from a flying point of view like that is so much better than using fly and you can get a nice aerial view of all the places you have visited. Everything can be done in normal graphics or 3D just like the last game, so everything that you came to expect from the last game is here once again.
Sound
All the music you remember from the old game has been redone to make sure you recognize them, but give them a beef up so they fit the more up to date sounds that the 3DS can give compared to the GBA. All the music comes through wonderfully and is a pleasure to listen to. There are some sounds and music that are better to listen to than others, but you get used to the music over time and if you care for it or don't care for it, it is easy to get into it or tune it out. It isn't annoying in the least little bit and does just what the music should do, give you something nice to listen to as you play or help get you pumped up in tense situations.
Control
Control using the control stick can sometimes be a little tricky from time to time when you are riding the bike or need precise movement, but the d-pad can also be used instead of the 3DS's control stick, so when you need more precise movement, it is the pad you should be using. Using the control stick can occasionally make you slide in the wrong direction or make you go diagonal when you may not want to do so, but that is the good part about being able to switch between the two different control pads, as each handles differently for whatever situation you may need.
Replay Value
Just as with all Pokemon games, Pokemon Alpha Sapphire has super high replay value for those that wish to play through the game multiple times as you can take different Pokemon and play styles through the game to see the different results you will get. Sure, there is still only one save game slot, so to create a new game does mean deleting your old game, so do still make sure you aren't losing anything you can't get again before doing so. Still, if you want to replay the game over and over again with different pokemon, go right ahead and enjoy it again. The story will be the exact same, but your play experience will likely be very different time after time.
Overall, Pokemon Alpha Sapphire allows you to relive the old Pokemon Sapphire game of the past, with the new graphical and gameplay mechanics that Pokemon X and Y brought us. If you are looking for a completely original Pokemon game, this isn't the Pokemon game for you. If you want to relive the old GBA game or play the Hoenn region games for the first time, then this is definitely a good remake of the old Sapphire version of Pokemon. While Pokemon is obviously not for everyone, if you are a Pokemon fan, it is definitely worth your time.
Overall, in my opinion at least, I give Pokemon: Alpha Sapphire an eight point five out of ten.

Now my contact information. If you wish to play me in Pokemon, just give me a shout first and I'll be happy to send you my friend code in a note. I don't want to just post it here though as I do want to regulate who gets my friend code. Have fun people!
