Identity Crisis
The world of spirits and totems can be a complex place, especially when combined with the mortal world of Furry, its culture, and is perceptions. Four years ago I changed my phenotype from Raccoon to Rat. I could write an essay as to my reasons, but needless to say it was a necessary change.
Well, the time has come, for me to return to my roots. I am now a Raccoon Fur once again.
My name is "Ryngs Rakune" (technically still) which is the name I first penned when I was 15 years old. During that time I drew anthro raccoons constantly, and had a comic about Raccoons, Transformation, and Injustice. Which earned me the name "Coon-Boy" by my rivals, and "Stickypawz" by my close friends. None of my close friends ever saw me as a Rat, still associate Raccoons, and Raccoon imagery with me. When I see any animal I get a giddy feeling, but when I see a Raccoon I still get an over whelming warmth stirring in my gut and spreading through out my being. As a result this is not a really hard change, as my name is still Ryngs, my home is still populated by an excessive amount of Raccoon imagery (art, statues, plushies, etc.). This feels right for me to do at this time.
Though, I have been having an identity crisis for several months now, and I knew this was coming for a while now.
I am still born in the year of the Rat (can't change that), and I still love rats, and rodents, but I was never totally comfortable when I would inform others to that phenotype... To all the rodent furs out there (especially the Rats) who have been more the generous, loving, and supportive, the world and furry does not give you guy enough credit, understanding, or compassion. I hope this change will not affect our friendships, and association.
With this change come new Art (or Conbadge). This is done in mixed media (charcoal, pastel, markers, gouache, graphite, and ink) on Bristol paper:

Fitting that I would make this announcement on my Birthday. *Wink*
With that, Enjoy *Grin*

Had you gone Cat however... well that'd be a different story.
Dominus tecum
And cats are beasts of burden, pets, and food *Wink, then runs and hides from the cat horde that he has now incited*
Being serious though, your art is always top notch. As long as it helps you keeping it enjoyable, that's awesome. :3
I love cats, I have 2 in fact. Thank you for the compliments, flattery is my favorite form of porn *Grin*
(kinda like mine does: she fetches, she chases dogs and cats away from the street (and for some reason they actually are afraid of her :o), she waits for us to get home near the door. She dogs more than she cats hehe)
When it comes to the external representation of self for interaction in this subculture, it is always a very personal one. And often times a very difficult one, one that many within the subculture can relate to.
Can completely understand your movement back to your roots as it were, back to a raccoon.
Hope that things go well for you, wishing all the best indeed.
And thank you *Grin*
Don't read the above comments, being lion and all *Ducks*
Welcome back and happy birthday, and here's to many, many more to come!
First off, I feel you never should have changed your fursona simply because your peers did not approve. However I do understand how tough peer preasure can be. You're a Racoon and theres Nothing wrong with that at all. If anything you have done yourself an injustus by refraining from your True self.
Don't get me wrong, I love All criters equally. I just hate to see people unhappy or thinking they need to change for some one else is all.
Congrates on reviving/revealing your True identity! I think Racoons Rock Dude!!
........aaaannnddd being a Dragon myself......I find them right tastey with a side of french fries and ketchup!
I changed for me not for how others see me. *Grin*
I don't have a working e-mail for you. Send me a message so i can add it to my commission ledger. I know your patient, but just saying: I am getting to your *Grin*
Just gotta keep an eye on my shinies and foods when they're around though. >.> <.< n.n
Hope the decision to go back to raccoon brings much enjoyment and comfort.
If you're a raccoon, be the best raccoon you can be. I don't see how I'll like you any less for being who you are just because that's not a fellow rat. If I can be close friends with large felines, you're not going to upset me as a raccoon.
I can attest to that fact. Thanks *Grin*
I Hope the change brings comfort for there is an animal in a man that must be exercised not exorcized.
Sometimes you've got to got to have that character feel like you, instead of having it be an idealized version.
I am not that special that I could make such a wonderful group with in Furry any better or less by my presence or absence. I am flattered by the compliment tho *Grin*
Now I understand where your furry name comes from! Personally, I think rats are cute. Raccoons are impressive, though; probably the most advanced species on Earth except for great apes. And very handsome.
our compliments flatter all Raccoon's superiority, even if it is true *Wink*
Your blessing is heart felt, I to have plenty of wild coon stories. Like, I used to live in the place where I could sit down and have a wild raccoons come up and sit in my lap, and crawl all over me.
We shall celebrate tomorrow, yer drinking on me! :D
BRING BUCKETS! of the good stuff, that way we can puke it back up into the empty buckets when we drink it ALLLLLLL!!!!
Joking *Wink* OOOR am I....
Coons and rats have a lot in common actually. They both get distracted by shiny things, they'll steal and horde nearly useless trinkets, and they love rummaging around in garbage! :3
I have pet rats and they're my babies so this is all in jest.
As for me, I was born in the year of the dog. My sona is an otter. Dogs and otters also have lots in common. They are both highly intelligent, they are skilled hunters, they're playful, and a lot of people don't know this but they both have webbed toes. Otters are sometimes even called "river wolves" or "water dogs".
Also Happy Birthday!
And, happy late birthday. Looking forward to seeing more beautiful art from you. :3
I changed for personal reason which had little to do with the opinions of others.
And Thanks you *Grin*
Bah. Of course this doesn't affect our friendship in any way.
Each of us need to live and explore our lives and our selves, and the best way to do that, is to walk in many different shoes. Change is good, but so is being true to ourselves and who we truly are inside. I would be more disappointed to hear that you were denying yourself the internal peace and acceptance of being a raccoon, simply to please us rodents.
You made a fun and adorable rat, and I'm sure the same will be the case with you as a raccoon. <3
And thank you for your blessing *Grin*
*Toothy Wink*
If you ever get an urge to do more rat stuff, you know who to call.
I love rodents! I love most animals, and love doing art of them all.
