The Captain is, for all means and purposes, the king of the ship. He has the final word on all matters, disciplinary, navigational, and mechanical. As such, he is required to be an expert on all subjects concerning ship function, including meteorology, engineering, and ethics. Although he is the boss, he relies on his crew as much as they depend on him. He needs to be strict, but fair, a person who will demand obedience but inspire loyalty. His quality as a captain is generally reflected by the crew's morale, and a bad captain will have a hard time retaining good crew members.
