Assistant Engineers share the same rank as deck hands. Their area of work is generally in the engine rooms or on the balloon and ballasts. They take their instructions from the Chief Engineer. Every week, one of the assistant engineers is assigned to work in the galley with the cook, forgoing their deck duties for that week. Assistant engineers are generally handy with mechanical systems. They are paid a flat monthly rate, except for bonuses on special occasions. Any assistant engineer can be elected to the rank of Quartermaster.
