Wolfespada MCU review 4 - Thor
Hello to thee, mortals and mortalettes. Welcome to yet another MCU review.
Y’know, looking back on certain things, there’ve been tons of Thor references in so many medias. My favorite one is from Aladdin 3 where Genie meets Thor, you know which scene I’m talkin’ about ;3. Just last Christmas I was watching ‘Eric the Viking,’ and there were the Norse Gods are kids XD. The Thor mythology is very interesting to me, almost as much as the Yokai lore, and obviously it inspired Stan Lee and the late, yet awesome Jack Kirby into making their own version of Thor, which is the 4th instalment of my MCU movie reviews:
THOR
Puente Antiguo, New Mexico. 3 astrophysicists are scoping the desert for any kind of anomalies; Dr. Erik Selvig, played by Stellan Skarsgård, an intern Darcy Lewis played by the lovely Kat Dennings, and of course Dr. Jane Foster played by Natalie Portman.
Now many folks have complained about Jane being a useless character in both Thor movies, and I’ll get to that here. I don’t have a problem with the character, mainly the actress who plays her. Natalie’s film career hasn’t exactly peaked since the Star Wars prequels. Me and a friend of mine just don’t like her as a person. She tried to take credit for the dancer that did the work in Black Swan, and apparently she had a hissy fit when a female director that was originally gonna do Thor 2 up and quit. (more on that when I do my Thor 2 review)
Anywhoo, our 3 scientists see something that looks like an aurora. They drive over to that location where a beam of light smashes the ground, creating a gust of dust… and they accidentally smack and man that was standing in the epicenter. They go see if the guy’s alright. It’s Thor himself, played by the ever awesome Chris Hemsworth. They wonder where came from.
Our story opens proper by a flashback as narrated by the Allfather, Odin, telling his two young sons, Prince Thor and Prince Loki about his tales of Frost Giants hailing another realm of Jotuenheim in 965 AD tried to create another ice Age on Earth, but Odin and his forces stopped them, and beat them back to their homeworld, where they claimed a large casket of Ancient Winters, their power source, in victory, and returned to their realm, Asgard (or Ass-Guard as I always slip up the words XD). Odin tells his sons that one of them will be king one day and keep the peace like he has for centuries.
Cut to centuries later, Thor’s all growed up, been granted his hammer, Mjølnir, and is having his inaugural celebration as the new King of Asgard. His brother, Loki, played by the DYNAMITE Tom Hiddleston, is all-too ‘pleased.’
In a vault, guards are keeping watch of the items that have been claimed by years of war. Here we see a first look at Thanos’ Infinity Gauntlet! The guards are attacked by 3 Frost Giants, trying to steal back their casket. Odin, who was about to crown Thor, sensed them and deploys The Destroyer, a massive enchanted automaton, and it kills them.
Odin, Thor and Loki inspect the damage. Nothing was taken, but Thor pleads with his father that this is an act of war and they should do something. Thor is gonna take the initiative, and wants to attack them, but Odin didn’t crown him, so he orders they leave it at that.
Thor gathers by Loki and talks his close friends, Volstagg, Fandral, Hogun also known as the Warriors 3, and Sif into coming with him, and they reluctantly agree. They ride out to the Bifrost, a rainbow bridge. The Bifrost guardian, Heimdall (played by Idris Elba), allows them to pass and the six are transported to the Frost Giants' domain, Jotunheim, a frozen, crumbling wasteland. They confront the Frost Giant King, Laufey, who taunts the Asgardian heroes. More Frost Giants surround the six as Laufey allows them the chance to leave peacefully. However, Thor reacts brashly to a Frost Giant's insult.. calling him ‘princess.’ Bad idea, and a massive battle is ensued. Thro and his friends battle Forst Giants left and right. Vostagg’s arm is burned when a Frost Giant touched him, and warns his friends, but Loki experiences an unusual reaction when he is touched by a frost giant. Fandral gets injured, and Laufey releases a GIGANTIC FROST BEAST and the Asgardians retreat to the Bifrost. Thor manages to kill the beast but once again the team is surrounded and things look desperate. Odin arrives and intervenes to save the warriors, apologizing to Laufey for the intrusion and attempting to reinstate peace, but Laufey states that they are beyond reason, and are now at war with Asgard. He attempts to stab Odin, who blasts Laufey back and takes the young Asgardians home.
Back on Asgard at the portal, Odin’s pretty pissed at Thor for dragging his friends into this fight, which got one injured, almost killed, but now brought Asgard into a war. Thor was doing what he felt was necesarry, but Odin calls him out as vain, greedy and cruel. Thro calls his father an old man and a fool. Odin was a fool, for thinking Thro was ready to be a king, so he takes away his hammer and his power and banishes to Midgard, OUR realm, Earth. That’s where he gets him by our scientists friends from the beginning.
Odin throws Thor’s hammer seconds after him, putting an enchantment on it, ‘Whosoever holds this hammer, if he be worthy, shall possess the power of Thor.’
Thor gets up, and Darcy, freaking out from his yelling for Heimdall, tasers him. They get him to a hospital. Once again, Thor starts fighting as he wakes up and he's eventually tranquilized. Thor realizes how weak his mortal body is now. Erik tries to get Jane to leave him be, saying he is some kind of nut, but she is curious, and attracted to him.
When the scientists return to their outpost in town they discover Coulson and several S.H.I.E.L.D. agents confiscating all of their equipment and research in connection to the recent atmospheric disturbances, and the appearance of Thor's hammer. Speaking of the hammer, several people have gathered of there, trying to lift the thing out but to no avail. This is where that end credit scene in Iron-Man 2 was, and Coulson arrives.
STAN LEE CAMEO: He’s a driver of a pickup truck that was trying to pull the hammer out, but the rear bumper ends up breaking off.
Things you might not have known, Mjølnir was created from a dying star, which weighs over a million pounds.
Another food for thought, during the production of Iron-man 3, there were several Marvel Short films produced called ‘One-Shots,’ and there were a couple ones of Coulson. One of which was one the way to Thor’s hammer, Coulson stops at a gas station and we see him fight some crooks trying to rob the place.
Unsure of what to do, the trio go back to the hospital but Thor has escaped. As they drive off in the van, they hit the Asgardian man again and knock him out, but this time they take him with them. Jane gives him civilian clothes that belonged to her ex-boyfriend, and the name’s Donald Blake. After overhearing locals discussing a satellite crash 50 miles due west, which is the hammer, Thor decides to go there and once again Erik tries to get Jane to leave him alone. Thor walks about the town and tries to get a horse in a pet store, or a dog, or a bird, something big enough to ride on. Jane appears and gives him a ride and the two head west in the van. Can you imagine Thor riding a giant dog?
Back on Asgard, Loki, Sif and the Warriors 3 are tending to their wounds, sorry that Thor’s been banished, and it turns out Loki told a guard to report to Odin they went to Jotunhiem after they had left. Sift pleads with Loki to plead to Odin to bring Thor back, but Loki counters saying he’s not the king Asgard needs, calling his brother rash, arrogant and dangerous. Loki leaves, Sif and the Warriors 3 talk it out that no matter how much Loki loves Thor, he’s always been jealous of him. Hogun is wondering how could those 3 Frost Giants get in, suspects that only a master of magic could’ve done that, suspects Loki, not only for that but for Thor’s banishment as well. Fandral says that Loki’s into mischief but this is something else entirely.
Meanwhile, Loki can’t stop thinking about when that Frost Giant touched his arm, it turned blue. Loki goes and sees the casket, touching it. Odin is there and sees him turning as blue as a Frost Giant. Loki asks what he is. Odin then reveals to Loki his true origins, that he’s the son of Laufey and was abandoned as a baby due to him being puny. Odin took him and raised his as his son, thinking he would help bring a peace between their two worlds, but now they’re at war, those plans no longer matter. Loki is confused and mad at Odin, that he thought Odin thought him as a trophy, and it makes sense to him why he favored Thor all those years. Odin, overcame from all the stress (I know the feeling) suddenly faints, falling into the ‘Odinsleep’, a coma-like sleep happens every winter from what I’ve learned. But now Loki is acting king.
Meanwhile back on Earth, its after dark, Jane and Thor arrive on the scene, and now S.H.I.E.L.D. has made a base around the hammer. Thor infiltrates the encampment while Jane huddles in safety, then runs away. Thor beats up many agents. This is where we’re first introduced to our favorite bow and arrow-wielding hero, Agent Clint Barton, a.k.a., Hawkeye, who targets Thor. Thor finally reaches the hammer, but is unable to lift it. He howls in anger at his powerlessness and drops to the ground, putting up no fight as S.H.I.E.L.D. agents close in and take him.
Coulson is questioning Thor, and when he leaves him alone briefly, Loki appears in the room. Loki tells Thor that Odin is dead and he cannot come back to Asgard, leaving Thor distraught. Erik, after reading up some Norse research, since Thor was going on and on about it, arrives and lies to the S.H.I.E.L.D. agents, telling them that Thor is Jane's ex-husband and is under the influence of steroids. Somehow he has faked a driver's license. Coulson lets Erik take Thor, who surreptitiously grabs Jane's notebook on the way out. This is where we meet Agent Jasper Sitwell. Remember this guy, folks.
Back in town Erik takes Thor, who is unsure of his life now, out for a drink, now trying to convince Thor to leave Jane alone due to the complications he has, and would continue to cause her. The two chug boilermakers and bond. Thor brings the drunk Erik to Jane's trailer. Thor and Jane go outside to gaze at the stars, and Thor explains the Nine Realms and the Bifrost Bridge to Jane. Jane figures the bridge is the theoretical Einstein-Rosen Bridge wormhole, the very same that she has been researching. This is a really good scene between the two.
In Jotunhiem, Loki pays a visit to Laufey, and it’s revealed that he led those 3 Frost Giants to Asgard, using secret passageways that only he knows about. Loki wanted to ruin his brother’s big day, at first it was for fun. He makes a deal with Laufey that he will let them into Asgard again to kill Odin and have their casket, and in return they will return home in peace. Loki returns to Asgard, and Heimdall is suspicious of him, Loki orders Heimdall not to breathe a word of this to anyone as Hiemdall is bound by a vow to serve his king without question.
Sif and the Warriors 3 must find Thor and bring him home, but its treason. Hiemdall requests their presence so that he can send them to retrieve Thor. Buuuuuuut, Loki catches wind of this and sends The Destroyer to kill them and Thor.
On Earth, Sif and the 3 locate Thor, and try to bring him back, and Thor learns his father’s still alive. The Destroyer arrives on Earth, almost wiping out Coulson and his team.
Meanwhile, Loki confronts Hiemdall, who takes a swing at Loki, but he freezes him with the casket. He brings Laufey and his gang to Asgard to enact their plan.
Thor and the three scientists attempt to get everyone away safely while Sif and the 3 fight the Destroyer, but aren’t faring well. Thor confronts the Destroyer and asks Loki, who can see and hear what is going on from Asgard, to leave the humans alone in return for himself. The Destroyer gives Thor a vicious backhand slap and sends him tumbling, apparently dead. Jane runs to the body in tears. However, Thor's selfless act of protection proves him worthy to once again wield Mjølnir, which frees itself from the crater and returns to Thor's hand. He is restored to full life and vigor and once again fitted in his red cape and armor. He easily defeats the Destroyer and tries to return to Asgard, promising Jane he will return.
Laufey goes to Odin's bed chamber and, as he prepares to kill him in his sleep, buuuuuut… Loki kills Laufey to appear to be the hero. Although frozen, Heimdall is conscious and manages to break free and brings Thor back to Asgard. Thor flies quickly to fight the frost giants, then confront Loki. Loki escapes and goes to the Bifrost portal to set it up to destroy Jotunhiem.
Now after over 3 years, Loki’s become a great villain in the MCU, and my 2nd favorite villain of all time, after Megabyte. He just has layers of him that make him a really unique character. He’s sly, cunning, has just a charm about him. That and Tom Hiddleston’s great acting really make this character come to life. After knowing his true origins, guess he wants to destroy his birthplace, his own kind to purge all that out, all cuz he just wants to be king, and win Odin’s appreciation, which turned for the worse.
Anyway, Thor fights Loki, who’s a very capable fighter and is pretty equal with Thor, in fact it was never about him wanting a throne, Loki wanted to be his equal. Thor tires to reason with him that he can’t destroy an entire race, Loki goads him on, asking why he’s suddenly gone so soft, and learned humility, maybe it’s cuz of Jane. Don’t piss off Thor if you threaten Jane. Thor manages to immobilize Loki, but the Bifrost is going to overload. With no choice, Thor uses his hammer to shatter the bridge to destroy the portal. When the bridge shatters, the two brothers fall into space but Odin arrives and catches Thor, who holds Loki's staff. Loki admits defeat and allows himself to fall, disappearing into the void, seemingly dead. Back on Earth, Jane is sad, fears she’ll never see Thor again.
All seems back to normal on Asgard, although Odin is saddened by the turn of events. Thor mourns for his brother and misses Jane, who he is unable to visit with the Bifrost now destroyed. However, Heimdall, gazing out over the severed edge of the bridge, assures him that Jane is looking for him. Back on Earth Jane is in a new lab with new equipment, now being assisted by S.H.I.E.L.D.. Thor looks off into space with a smile of hope.
So that was Thor, and I gotta say, I still enjoy the hell outta this movie. Some people call this and its sequel mediocre. Their dumbass opinion, and it’s dully noted, but I can watch this movie again and again. It’s a good fantasy tale; kinda Star Wars-y with Lord of the Rings vibe to it. Kenneth Bragnah did a cool job, although some of the Dutch angles weren’t necessary, but not bad, definitely not as bad as Battlefield Earth.
It’s a shame though he can’t rock the helmet in the future. Maybe in the third film… doubtful, but not really a big deal for me.
yeah, the rivalry of brothers has been clichéd to death, then go so have SO MANY other things in cinema. And I don't mind that, it's the way its handled is the key.
Hiddleston was originally up for playing Thor, and I’ve seen him in the suit. Skinny, but pretty badass.
After credit scene: Selvig has been taken to a S.H.I.E.L.D. facility where he meets Nick Fury.
This is where we get a look at the powerful cube, the Space Stone, one of six immensely powerful Infinity Stones, also known as the Tesseract. Fury shows him the cube in a briefcase, which he says could be a source of unlimited power, and brought Selvig in for the project. Loki appears in a reflection, invisible to Selvig and Fury, and says "Well, I guess that's worth a look," which Selvig repeats due to Loki's subtle influence. Now I thought that mirror thing was gonna be played out in Avengers, but it wasn’t. Eeh, no big whoop.
Now we get to see the Tesseract in action next time in Captain America: the First Avenger.
Till next time. Live the dream and draw it.
Thanks for your time.

And no mention of the cameo of Thor writer and Babylon 5 creator J. Michael Straczynski? He was the first guy who found and tried to lift Thor's hammer! Big guy, too - he's 6'5".
And y'know, he probably had a lot of fun.
